Firstly, I love that B. Dylan song.

Secondly, I completely agree with you on Seeing Things. I think it's a fantastic record all the way through. Actually, I was probably one of the few people anticipating it and thought it was such a real and telling interpretation of the subject matter, which seems to skip through a variety of time periods. Its beautiful.

Jakob is more my generation, being that I was in 9th grade or so when I became a fan and I've kind of just followed his band's music. It's great. They have a sortaMOR sound, but his lyrics, songwriting, delivery are really captivating to me. I love things like this for example:

Here He Comes (Confessions of a Drunken Marionette) (Jakob Dylan)

Here comes your drunken marionette
Dragging his mess of threads
There at the bar pulling smoke to his lungs
He says who will ignore me when you're gone?
Now come on lift me up
I wanna dance by your tin cup
Tower of beauty with a split in your tongue
Who will ignore me when you're gone?
He says who will ignore me when you're gone?
Here he cooooooomes
Here he cooooooomes
Be still the wooden heart
That wouldn't ever part
With the drunken marionette
Been mainlining bad thoughts
Been drinking things I wish I'd not
Intoxicated with sad songs
Who will forgive you when I'm gone?
They sing auld lang syne
I've got mutiny on my mind
A guilty conscience means at least you've got one
Who will forgive you when I'm gone?
He says who will forgive you when I'm gone?
Here he comes
Here he comes
Be still the wooden heart
Who wouldn't ever part
Waiting on a spark
That hasn't happened yet
For the drunken marionette
Carry on
Turn the lights on when you go
In the hours left
I hope you feel the things that i know I won't
What you give is what you get
I get so worried bout your debts
Who carries evil out evil will come
Who will defend you when I'm gone?
He says who will defend you when I'm gone?
Here he comes
Here he comes
Be still the wooden heart
Wouldn't ever part
Waiting on a spark
That hasn't happened yet
Here he comes
Here he comes
Be still the wooden heart
That wouldn't ever part
Waiting on a spark
That hasn't happened yet

And I really love that it's straight, simple music. He's a cool guy, too. I'm not sure it's fair to bring up the DAD thing (though, shoot, how can you not?) because I feel he's earned his own spotlight, and I'm certain it annoys him that people still think he's trying to hone a career based on his father's name- after all the success and acclaim he has been able to achieve on his own, despite much criticism and doubt. I was very upset I missed his current tour but I will definitely be seeing him/them when he/they decide to come around again.

Actually as much as I love Dylan Snr, it never ceases to annoy me that they only seem to ask Jakob about Bob. I remember watching an interview with Jakob a few years back after Bob had won the Grammy (or was it two?). All the interviewer asked was questions about Bob.

I know, it is like when people ask Lindsey about Stevie, it is so annoying.

Default The definitive description...

to how I am feeling at this moment:

"Wearing The Inside Out" - Pink Floyd

"From morning to night I stayed out of sight
Didn't recognize I'd become
No more than alive I'd barely survive
In a word...overrun

Won't hear a sound
From my mouth
I've spent too long
On the inside out
My skin is cold
To the human touch
This bleeding heart's
Not beating much

I murmured a vow of silence and now
I don't even hear when I think aloud
Extinguished by light I turn on the night
Wear its darkness with an empty smile

I'm creeping back to life
My nervous system all awry
I'm wearing the inside out

Look at him now
He's paler somehow
But he's coming round
He's starting to choke
It's been so long since he spoke
Well he can have the words right from my mouth

And with these words I can see
Clear through the clouds that covered me
Just give it time then speak my name
Now we can hear ourselves again

I'm holding out
For the day
When all the clouds
Have blown away
I'm with you now
Can speak your name
Now we can hear
Ourselves again"

"Broken, Beat & Scarred" - Metallica

"You rise, you fall, you're down then you rise again,
What don't kill ya makes ya more strong,
Rise, fall, down, rise again,
What don't kill ya makes ya more strong.

Rise, fall, down, rise again,
What don't kill ya makes ya more strong,
Rise, fall, down, rise again,
What don't kill ya makes ya more strong.

Through black days, through black nights,
Through pitch black insides.

CHORUS:
Breakin' your teeth on the hard life a'comin,
(Show your scars)
Cuttin' your feet on the hard earth running
(Show your scars)
Breakin' your life, broken beat and scarred,
But we die hard.

The dawn, the death, the fight to the final breath,
What don't kill ya makes ya more strong,
Dawn, death, fight, final breath,
What don't kill ya makes ya more strong.

They scratch me, they scrape me,
They cut and rape me.

CHORUS

We die hard.
We die hard."

Unhappy The saddest song of all-time

"It Can't Rain All The Time" - Jane Siberry (From the motion picture soundtrack of the movie "The Crow")

"We walk the narrow path
Beneath the smoking skies
Sometimes you barely tell the difference
Between the darkness...and light.

Do we have faith...in what we believe?
The truest test...is when we cannot
When we cannot see.

I hear the pounding feet in the
In the streets below and the
And the women crying and the
And the children know that there's
There's something wrong
It's hard to believe that love will prevail.

(Oh)
It won't rain all the time
The sky won't fall forever
And though the night seems long
Your tears won't fall...forever.

Oh, when I'm lonely...I lie awake at night
And I wish you were here
I miss you.

Can you tell me
Is there something more to believe in?
Or is this all there is?

And the pounding feet in the
In the streets below and a
And a window breaks and a
And a woman falls and it's -
There's something wrong -
It's, it's hard to believe that love will prevail.

It won't rain all the time
The sky won't fall forever
And though the night seems long
Your tears won't fall
Your tears won't fall
Your tears won't fall...
Forever.

Last night I had a dream
You came into my room
You took me into your arms
Whispering and kissing me
And telling me to still believe
(Within the emptiness of
The burning cities against which
We set our darkest of selves)
Until I felt safe and warm
I fell asleep in your arms
And when I awoke I cried again
For you were gone
Oh, can you hear me?

It won't rain all the time
The sky won't fall forever
And though the night seems long
Your tears won't fall forever.

It won't rain all the time
The sky won't fall forever
And though the night seems long
Your tears won't fall
Your tears won't fall
Your tears won't fall...
Forever."

You all know this one...let's all sing along...

I can't help about the shape I'm in
I can't sing
I ain't pretty
And, my legs are thin

But, don't ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to.

Oh well.

Now I talked to God
I knew he'd understand
He said, "Sit by me and take my guiding hand.

But, don't ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to."

Oh well.

I am a scientist - I seek to understand me
All of my impurities and evils yet unknown
I am a journalist - I write to you to show you
I am an incurable
And nothing else behaves like me

And I know what's right
But I'm losing sight
Of the clues for which I search and choose to abuse
To just unlock my mind
Yeah, and just unlock my mind

I am a pharmacist
Prescriptions I will fill you
Potions, pills, and medicines
To ease your painful lives
I am a lost soul
I shoot myself with rock & roll
The hole I dig is bottomless
But nothing else can set me free

I am a scientist - I seek to understand me
I am an incurable and nothing else behaves like me

Everything is right
Everything works out right
Everything fades from sight
Because that's alright with me

Nico, now I am trying my best to get into Jakob Dylan, but not really being a Bob Dylan fan...well, that may be a stumbling block. The similarities & comparisons are inevitable, but I do agree that you have to look at his own body of work and ignore his heritage

From what I have heard, Wallflowers vs. solo stuff, I think the man needs a BAND! His lyrics in the Wallflowers were still dark, mysterious, err...depressing(?).. BUT his band was really good at developing some snappy sounds around all those melancholy words. Now we just have the depressing lyrics and no snappy sounds

SO Jakob, you DID the "Yeah-I'm-Springsteen-but-I-can-be-a-real-drag-if-I-wanna-be" thing ("Nebraska","The Ghost of Tom Joad")...now, take a couple Xanax, get back on that whorse and make something we can DANCE to!

PS...even that "Man-I-could-use-some-sleep-GODIMDEPRESSED-hey-pass-that-joint-this-way-MANIMACREEP!" Thom Yorke Radiohead dude manages to get out there and DANCE!!!

Speaking of Bob Dylan, and the need for a band....well, Bob Dylan's band for awhile was THE BAND, and the shining star imho from that collaboration was the gifted Robbie Robertson.

His self-titled solo album is a masterpiece...beautifully written, recorded, produced...I have the MFSL Original Master Recording CD of it (out of print and HTF). That album also had the Rod-Stewart-hacked-but-made-famous song "Broken Arrow". Listen to Robbie's original version, it's gorgeous!

The album featured none other than my hero Peter Gabriel providing haunting background vocals for "Fallen Angel", but some U2 dudes, Tony Levin, Terry Bozzio, Manu Katche, Daniel Lanois, Gil Evans and many other talented musicians. Wonderful!

Fallen Angel

Are you out there
Can you hear me
Can you see me in the dark

I don't believe it's all for nothing
It's not just written in the sand
Sometimes I thought you felt too much
And you crossed into the shadowland

And the river was overflowing
And the sky was fiery red
You gotta play the hand that's dealt ya
That's what the old man always said

Fallen Angel
Casts a shadow up against the sun
If my eyes could see
The spirit of the chosen one

In my dream the pipes were playing
In my dream I lost a friend
Come down Gabriel and blow your horn
'Cause some day we will meet again

Fallen Angel
Casts a shadow up against the sun
If my eyes could see
The spirit of the chosen one

All the tears
All the rage
All the blues in the night
If my eyes could see
You kneeling in the silver light

Fallin', fallin', fallin' down
Fallin', fallin' down
Fallin', fallin', fallin' down
Fallin', fallin' down

Fallen Angel
Casts a shadow up against the sun
If my eyes could see
The spirit of the chosen one

All the tears
All the rage
All the blues in the night
If my eyes could see
You kneeling in the silver light

If you're out there can you touch me
Can you see me I don't know
If you're out there can you reach me
Lay a flower in the snow

-Robbie Robertson

Hmm...well, I do love Thom Yorke's dance moves, gotta say.

Really, I can't defend Jakob Dylan or his music. I just like it. Could also be that he was kind of big when I was in school and that music is probably just embedded in my subconscious as part of the nostalgia trip. Or it could be that he's just a really good songwriter and I love his music & voice. Yeah, it's not innovative and it certainly isn't groundbreaking, but I like the sincerity in which he delivers his words- and I love the words he uses to tell his stories. And I love his voice. So there. Nothing more. I'm in love with his father, but I always take them as separate entities, because I do feel he has earned that right.

Now, since we may be on the topic of Bob Dylan. And forget for a minute that I was arguing the validity of Jakob being judged separately, I want to say that I am currently playing out Tell Tale Signs along with-still-Lindsey and here's one of my favorite things ever (and I love the album version just as much):

Someday Baby (Bob Dylan)

I don't care what you do, I don't care what you say
I don't care where you go or how long you stay
Someday baby, you ain't gonna worry about me any more

Well you take my money and you turn it out
You fill me up with nothing but self doubt
Someday baby, you ain't gonna worry about me any more

When I was young, driving was my crave
You drive me so hard, almost to the grave
Someday baby, you ain't gonna worry about me any more

I'm so hard pressed, my mind tied up in knots
I keep recycling the same old thoughts
Someday baby, you ain't gonna worry about me me any more

So many good things in life that I've overlooked
I don't know what to do now, you got me hooked
Someday baby, you ain't gonna worry about me me any more

Well, I don't want to brag, but I'm gonna wring your neck
When all else fails I'll make it a matter of self respect
Someday baby, you ain't gonna worry about me any more

You can take your clothes put them em in a sack
You're going down the road, baby and you can't come back
Someday baby, you ain't gonna worry about me any more

I tried to be friendly, I tried to be kind
I'm gonna drive you from your home, just like I was driven from mine
Someday baby, you ain't gonna worry about me any more

Living this way ain't a natural thing to do
Why was I born to love you?

Someday baby, you ain't gonna worry about me any more

Sorry Nico, I wasn't bashing Jakob Dylan or trying to get you to justify why you think he's great. Some artists we love for nostalgic or associative reasons, I mean...my affinity for Todd Rundgren owes a large part to the fact my older sisters loved him. And he's produced some great things too, like XTC (although the b*st*rd gave me one of my worst concerts EVER, I still like him)

People that I look up to or respect a great deal, I try to appreciate things that they love. So, you could say by my trying to understand why you love Jakob so much, that I respect YOUR music choices a great deal. ( I do--you have GREAT taste!)

Now that Bob Dylan song...those are powerful lyrics! But the thing that struck me the most was your tagline from The Killers. I sometimes feel this way:
"Pay my respects to grace and virtue, send my condolences to good; Give my regards to soul and romance, they always did the best they could..."

Hey, they are playing The Killers on the radio, and THAT'S some music I can definitely get into! "Somebody told me, that you had a boyfriend, Who looks like a girlfriend, That I had in February of last year......" HOT STUFF!

Ok, someone is bound to slam me for liking Howard Jones, but I do! Sure, he had some electro-beat hits in the early 80's, but he matured into a very good songwriter (imho). His production is very Steely-Dan like, and alot of his songs are not too deep, but many times that's just what I want. Something simple, honest and clean. This is one of my favorites from him:

The Prisoner

You have watched me, safe in your anonymity
I have dreamed you, held in your security
Some people believe a photograph traps your mortal soul
Your eyes were the camera and you've taken hold
And you captured me
I need you to take control
I am a prisoner of no confidence
You've entered me now make me whole

Every place I go I feel your lenses trained on me
This distant concentration takes away my energy
Your image burns its negative
Behind my waking eyes
Then the night comes and you stalk your prize
And you captured me
I need you to take control
I am a prisoner of no confidence
You've entered me now make me whole

Some people believe a photograph traps your mortal soul
Your eyes were the camera and youve taken hold
And you captured me
I need you to take control
I am a prisoner of no confidence
You've entered me now make me whole

And another fav from HJ. A little sadder, but he has such a great voice! And the man covered a Donald Fagen song, how cool is that?

Tears To Tell

The time has come to watch you go watch you go
We weathered rough storms together
Couldnt conceive of the end
When I heard of your leavin
It came as a shock and surprise
Like the deepest kinds of love
Lost on the inside
Locked right on the inside

What is the greatest expression of love,
To let go and wish well
But all these finer feelings have left me with tears to tell

I couldnt be the one to hold you stop you go
It is like stripping the soul
Letting all the finest pieces go
You know these feelings between us
Could not be expressed
You will never know my old secrets
They are so deeply felt they are so deeply felt

What is the greatest expression of love
To let go and wish well
But all these finer feelings have left me
What is the greatest expression of love,
To let go and wish well
But all these finer feelings have left me with tears to tell

Leaving me with my anecdoted and private jokes
The memory of a friend
You dont seem to know my old secrets
They are so deeply felt they are so deeply felt

What is the greatest expression of love
To let go and wish well
But all these finer feelings have left me
What is the greatest expression of love
To let go and wish well
But all these finer feelings have left me with tears to tell
But all these finer feelings have left me with tears to tell

-Howard Jones
