If you are a Elvis Presley fan, or just a music fan in general (why else would you be here?), you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of the newly remastered Elvis CD "That's The Way It Is". It's a two disc set and includes many previously unreleased alternate takes. The sound is really unbelievable compared to the previously released versions of this album. I would say even better sound than the original vinyl release from 1970.
If you're only familiar with his biggest hits, especially the ones from the 50's this album might be a shock to your system. It was a mature Presley coming off the success of the '68 Comeback Special and back on tour that you'll find on this CD. He was in top form during this time of his life. ELVIS "THAT'S THE WAY IT IS" CD (FTD LABEL 2008) 2 CD Set. Well worth it's $29.98 I believe it's only available through ShopElvis.com and some fan clubs. Track List: Disc One I Just Can't Help Believin' Twenty Days And Twenty Nights How The Web Was Woven Patch It Up Mary In The Morning You Don't Have To Say You Love Me You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling I've Lost You Just Pretend Stranger In The Crowd The Next Step Is Love Bridge Over Troubled Water Patch It Up (Studio Version) I've Lost You (Studio Version) Twenty Days And Twenty Nights (take 8) Bridge Over Troubled Water (live) Little Sister/Get Back (live) Something (live) The Next Step Is Love (undubbed master) Patch It Up (take 1) Bridge Over Troubled Water (alternate mix) Disc 2 Tiger Man (jam) Twenty Days And Twenty Nights (rehearsal) I've Lost You (rehearsal) Bridge Over Troubled Water (take 1) You Don't Have To Say You Love Me (rehearsal) The Next Step Is Love (rehearsal) How The Web Was Woven (rehearsal) Stranger In The Crowd (rehearsal) Stranger In The Crowd (Master take, rough mix) Mary In The Mourning (multi takes) Patch It Up (takes 2-7) Patch It Up (alternate master) You Don't Have To Say You Love Me (takes 1-2) Just Pretend (takes 1-2) The Next Step Is Love (multi takes) Bridge Over Troubled Water (rehearsal) I've Lost You (takes 4,5,6) Twenty Days And Twenty Nights (takes 5,6) Twenty Days And Twenty Nights (master, rough mix) |

Interesting to see this on this board.
I'm interested in this, but how does it compare to the 3-cd set that was released a few years ago? These sound improvements have been done to most Elvis records since the early 90's,most important to me was 50's box set, some of my vinyls had simply horrible sound. That's the way it is sounds fine,no doubt it can be improved. What i really want now is -69 sessions on 5.1 sound. They were atleast partly recorded in isolation,so it may be possible. |

It would be hard to choose between the two because of the different track list. The concert on the 3-CD set you mentioned (disc 2) is worth the price alone on that set. But I certainly would pick the new set for the sound quality. And the new set has a great booklet included with some of the best photos of Elvis I've seen. So both are very much worth having. I also want the '69 sessions in the best possible sound. Some of which the FTD/BMG Label have already released. Over the past few years there's been a big improvement in the sound quality of many of Elvis' CD's. You've just got buy the right ones! |

Thanks for this!
It's an easy choice for me,this new set. Main reason why i didn't buy the 3-cd set was the inclusion of the live cd. I try to avoid his live records,of the 5 released during his life, i listen to 1 somewhat often,2 sometimes and 2 practically never. Those 5 are quite enough for me. The alternate takes that FTD have been releasing during the last years are also something that i tread carefully. It's a never ending sea if you get caught there and those versions are largely so similar to released versions,i find them mostly useless. Many times he got the song in first take,so the rest are just his desire to go over the song again, not to find new angles to them. Rehearsal versions are more tempting. |
