Thumbs up The Choral Music Appreciation Thread

Alright, so a lot of you all may know that I am going to school, majoring in choral music education. I sang in my high school choir for 4 years, and was a part of the "elite group", The Madrigals, for three of them. Currently I sing in the Men's Chorus and Choral Society here at Western Kentucky University. I absolutely love it. Just thought we could post some of our favorite songs and or recordings if we had any, and talk about our experiences singing in a choir.

Here is a link of a 2 new recordings Men's Chorus did last week.

www.wku.edu/sing

Click on Men's Chorus, and there should be the fight song and National anthem.

Personally, my favorite piece of music all time I think, is Morten Lauriden's "Lux Aterna". I sang it last year in high school for various things, and we are doing it in Choral Society this year. It is a major work, and is absolutely pheonomenal. LA MASTER CHORALE has a recording of this, and you can listen to clips on amazon and or youtube. When done by a really good choir, this piece will make you cry. And yes, it has made me cry. It's amazing.

Anyway, I thought this would be a little change of pace and whatnot. Hope everyone is well!!

Much Love,
Ethan

You were in Madrigals?!
I'M in Madrigals!

I'm currently a Junior, and I was the first girl to ever make it into Madrigals at my school as a sophomore
At least as long as anyone can remember.

But that's so cool! Madrigals rock!

Oh geeze. We did so many songs last year...I'll try to remember some.
But right now we're working on My Heart is Offered Still To You, I Wish I Had The Sheppards Lamb, and I Love My Love. I Love My Love is hands down my favorite song we'll ever perform. It's just too darn cool. Ever heard of them?

Last year our signature piece was He Never Failed Me Yet, a popular gospel song. That got annoying, though. Umm, Go Lovely Rose was nice...
The last two I can thinik of are My Dancing Day, and Carol of the Bells (it's tradition) for Christmas.

Phew.

How about you?

I've sung a version of Go Lovely Rose, and it was a pheonomenal piece. My Heart Is Offered Still To YOu was the KY All State Audition Piece last year. Who were the arrangers of the versions of those two songs that you did. I'm curious to see if they are the same ones!!!

Okay, well I did my searching, and I wasn't able to find a copy of Go Lovely Rose. It's stored away in our library somewhere. pfft.

On our sheets for My Heart, all it says is written by Orlandus Lassus. Not sure if that helps you see if we're singing the same thing, but that's all I got, haha

You should ask about the Go Lovely Rose.

I think the My Heart is the same one... however we more than often do it in French. I think that name is Orlando Di Lasso.

Yeah, we're doing the english version.

I wanted to ask you, have you ever heard of What Shall We Do With A Drunken Sailor? It's one of the coolest songs I've heard. I remember being in elementary school, and the Madrigals would come and sing that song, and I thought it was so cool that it stuck out in my memory for so long. Now our director brought it out for us this year, and I'm just so excited about it!

My high school choir's freshman men did that song last year or something. A lot of the songs they do are "sailor songs". Is your version SATB?

Yep. The sopranos split into two parts for some parts, and I believe the altos do, too.
