Unhappy Pink Floyd Member Richard Wright Dies at 65

Pink Floyd Member Richard Wright Dies at 65
Monday , September 15, 2008

A Pink Floyd spokesman says founding member Richard Wright has died. He was 65.

Wright died Monday after a battle with cancer at his home in Britain. His family did not want to give more details about his death. The spokesman is Doug Wright, who is not related to the artist.

Richard Wright met Pink Floyd members Roger Waters and Nick Mason at college and joined their early band Sigma 6.

Sigma 6 eventually became Pink Floyd and Wright wrote and sang some of the band's key songs. He wrote "The Great Gig In The Sky" and "Us And Them" from Pink Floyd's 1973 "The Dark Side Of The Moon."

He left the group in the early 1980s to form his own band but rejoined Pink Floyd for their 1987 album "A Momentary Lapse of Reason."

I saw this and was very sad. As an avid PF fan I feel a sense of loss. Another musical genius taken too early in my book.

Sad indeed.

His first solo album from 1978, Wet Dream, is REALLY REALLY good. I'm on my second copy of the LP since I wore out the first copy in a couple of years after it came out. It was released on CD, but is now out of print and is going for $50 & up at Amazon.com's used sites. With today's news those prices will probably go up even more.

I feel the same. When a band meber dies, I feel the band would never be the same. I felt the same with Mercury, Lennon (ok, about the hope of a reunion, you know), etc..

Hope the other members put their differences aside just for few moments and join the family at funerals.

I didn't even know he was sick. I grew up listening to Pink Floyd, and they've grown to become one of my favourite bands of all time. Rick was a master of the keys! RIP.

ah... sad news indeed, and as mentioned so unexpected. The news bulletins here said he had a short battle with cancer, (which is thankfully, something he didn't have to endure, for too long. horrible illness.) Any member of such a massive group and like others before him will always be sadly missed.

Evening has come now for Rick. Vale.

Default Roger Waters issues statement on Richard Wright's passing

ROGER WATERS - "It Is Hard To Overstate The Importance Of (Richard Wright's) Musical Voice In The PINK FLOYD Of The '60s And '70s"

PINK FLOYD legend ROGER WATERS has issued the following statement regarding the passing of his fellow band mate/keyboardist Richard Wright, who died on September 15th at the age of 65 after battling cancer:

""I was very sad to hear of Rick's premature death. I knew he had been ill, but the end came suddenly and shockingly. My thoughts are with his family, particularly [his children] Jamie and Gala and their mum Juliet, who I knew very well in the old days, and always liked very much and greatly admired.

As for the man and his work, it is hard to overstate the importance of his musical voice in the Pink Floyd of the '60s and '70s. The intriguing, jazz influenced, modulations and voicings so familiar in 'Us and Them' and 'Great Gig in the Sky,' which lent those compositions both their extraordinary humanity and their majesty, are omnipresent in all the collaborative work the four of us did in those times. Rick's ear for harmonic progression was our bedrock.

I am very grateful for the opportunity that Live 8 afforded me to engage with him and David [Gilmour] and Nick [Mason] that one last time. I wish there had been more."

I noticed that when George Harrison died, people finally got off the whole Beatles reunion thing. Paul and Ringo alone just don't cut it. (I wish the Who would take notice...)

The Who still have (arguably) the two main principals of the band, in terms of their popularity and notoriety- so, they can get away with it to a certain degree. Same with the Beatles, if it was Paul & John, with Zak Starkey & Jeff Lynne.
