I think when it comes to songs that I really adore and return to time and again, the whole package- music, words, performance- really has to move me for that love to sustain. But I am really, really moved by lyrics. I've always been. And I thought I'd start a thread about song lyrics that really mean a lot to us.
Right now I'd have to say this song is IT for me. Really just perfect: WILL IT GROW (Jakob Dylan) I made a promise to not let go Our tug of war has only made me want you more Steeped in hard luck and doomed to roam My love is braver than you know My forefathers they worked this land And I was schooled in the tyranny of nature's plans Dressed in thunder a cloud came round In the shape of a lion a hand came down Damn this valley Damn this cold Take so long to let me know It's plant and reap and plow and sow But tell me will it grow Dig my ditches in the golden sun I'd be robbing these trains if I could catch me one Sunday Monday now Tuesday's gone Got me stone cold sober n a drought so long Boarded mansions and ghost filled yards There's a boy in a water tower counting cars Steel traps open and empty stalls There's a well-worn saddle but the horse is gone Damn this valley Damn this cold Take so long to let me know It's plant and reap and plow and sow But tell me will it grow Jet black starlit midnight rolls I am down in the garden where I let go Here on the surface the earth looks round But it's a godless city of cold flat ground Damn this valley Damn this cold Take so long to let me know It's plant and reap and plow and sow But tell me will it grow I love this entire album. I've kinda always had a thing for Jakob Dylan since the Wallflowers first started, years ago. Love his music, love him. He's deep...er. yeah,I love his dad to but that's neither here nor there. ![]()

I agree - all time favorite is Landslide - has been since the first time I heard it!
Two others one old and one more recent: Anna Nalick "Breathe (2 AM)" 2 AM and she calls me 'cause I'm still awake, "Can you help me unravel my latest mistake?, I don't love him. Winter just wasn't my season" Yeah we walk through the doors, so accusing their eyes Like they have any right at all to criticize, Hypocrites. You're all here for the very same reason 'Cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table No one can find the rewind button, girl. So cradle your head in your hands And breathe... just breathe, Oh breathe, just breathe May he turned 21 on the base at Fort Bliss "Just a day" he said down to the flask in his fist, "Ain't been sober, since maybe October of last year." Here in town you can tell he's been down for a while, But, my God, it's so beautiful when the boy smiles, Wanna hold him. Maybe I'll just sing about it. Cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable, And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table. No one can find the rewind button, boys, So cradle your head in your hands, And breathe... just breathe, Oh breathe, just breathe There's a light at each end of this tunnel, You shout 'cause you're just as far in as you'll ever be out And these mistakes you've made, you'll just make them again If you only try turning around. 2 AM and I'm still awake, writing a song If I get it all down on paper, it's no longer inside of me, Threatening the life it belongs to And I feel like I'm naked in front of the crowd Cause these words are my diary, screaming out loud And I know that you'll use them, however you want to But you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable, And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table No one can find the rewind button now Sing it if you understand. and breathe, just breathe woah breathe, just breathe, Oh breathe, just breathe, Oh breathe, just breathe. and In My Life The Beatles There are places i'll remember All my life though some have changed Some forever not for better Some have gone and some remain All these places have their moments With lovers and friends i still can recall Some are dead and some are living In my life i've loved them all But of all these friends and lovers There is no one compares with you And these memories lose their meaning When i think of love as something new Though i know i'll never lose affection For people and things that went before I know i'll often stop and think about them In my life i love you more Though i know i'll never lose affection For people and things that went before I know i'll often stop and think about them In my life i love you more In my life i love you more |

Shebop, In My Life is a masterpiece. Gorgeous song.
Hmm, I'll post another I love: MISSISSIPPI (Bob Dylan) Every step of the way we walk the line Your days are numbered, so are mine Time is pilin' up, we struggle and we scrape We're all boxed in, nowhere to escape City's just a jungle, more games to play Trapped in the heart of it, trying to get away I was raised in the country, I been workin' in the town I been in trouble ever since I set my suitcase down Got nothing for you, I had nothing before Don't even have anything for myself anymore Sky full of fire, pain pourin' down Nothing you can sell me, I'll see you around All my powers of expression and thoughts so sublime Could never do you justice in reason or rhyme Only one thing I did wrong Stayed in Mississippi a day too long Well, the devil's in the alley, mule's in the stall Say anything you wanna, I have heard it all I was thinkin' about the things that Rosie said I was dreaming I was sleeping in Rosie's bed Walking through the leaves, falling from the trees Feeling like a stranger nobody sees So many things that we never will undo I know you're sorry, I'm sorry too Some people will offer you their hand and some won't Last night I knew you, tonight I don't I need somethin' strong to distract my mind I'm gonna look at you 'til my eyes go blind Well I got here following the southern star I crossed that river just to be where you are Only one thing I did wrong Stayed in Mississippi a day too long Well my ship's been split to splinters and it's sinking fast I'm drownin' in the poison, got no future, got no past But my heart is not weary, it's light and it's free I've got nothin' but affection for all those who've sailed with me Everybody movin' if they ain't already there Everybody got to move somewhere Stick with me baby, stick with me anyhow Things should start to get interesting right about now My clothes are wet, tight on my skin Not as tight as the corner that I painted myself in I know that fortune is waitin' to be kind So give me your hand and say you'll be mine Well, the emptiness is endless, cold as the clay You can always come back, but you can't come back all the way Only one thing I did wrong Stayed in Mississippi a day too long

We could do this all day, I'm sure! And to think I was not familiar with Mississippi until Sheryl Crow covered it!
Here's another: Ticking Music by Elton John Lyrics by Bernie Taupin "An extremely quiet child" they called you in your school report "He's always taken interest in the subjects that he's taught" So what was it that brought the squad car screaming up your drive To notify your parents of the manner in which you died At St. Patricks every Sunday, Father Fletcher heard your sins "Oh, he's unconcerned with competition he never cares to win" But blood stained a young hand that never held a gun And his parents never thought of him as their troubled son "Now you'll never get to Heaven" Mama said Remember Mama said Ticking, ticking "Grow up straight and true blue Run along to bed" Hear it, hear it, ticking, ticking They had you holed up in a downtown bar screaming for a priest Some gook said "His brain's just snapped" then someone called the police You'd knifed a Negro waiter who had tried to calm you down Oh you'd pulled a gun and told them all to lay still on the ground Promising to hurt no one, providing they were still A young man tried to make a break, with tear-filled eyes you killed That gun butt felt so smooth and warm cradled in your palm Oh your childhood cried out in your head "they mean to do you harm" "Don't ever ride on the devil's knee" Mama said Remember mama said Ticking, ticking "Pay your penance well, my child Fear where angels tread" Hear it, hear it, ticking, ticking Within an hour the news had reached the media machine A male caucasian with a gun had gone berserk in Queens The area had been sealed off, the kids sent home from school Fourteen people lying dead in a bar they called the Kicking Mule Oh they pleaded to your sanity for the sake of those inside "Throw out your gun, walk out slow just keep your hands held high" But they pumped you full of rifle shells as you stepped out the door Oh you danced in death like a marionette on the vengeance of the law "You've slept too long in silence" Mama said Remember Mama said Ticking, ticking "Crazy boy, you'll only wind up with strange notions in your head" Hear it, hear it, ticking, ticking |

Hmm...that Elton John song sounds beautiful. I'll have to get into him more. Bernie Taupin has written some great lyrics. I've always adored this one, and then when I found out it's inspiration I loved it even more:
THE PRETENDER (Jackson Browne) I'm going to rent myself a house In the shade of the freeway Im going to pack my lunch in the morning And go to work each day And when the evening rolls around Ill go on home and lay my body down And when the morning light comes streaming in Ill get up and do it again Amen Say it again Amen I want to know what became of the changes We waited for love to bring Were they only the fitful dreams Of some greater awakening Ive been aware of the time going by They say in the end its the wink of an eye And when the morning light comes streaming in Youll get up and do it again Amen Caught between the longing for love And the struggle for the legal tender Where the sirens sing and the church bells ring And the junk man pounds his fender Where the veterans dream of the fight Fast asleep at the traffic light And the children solemnly wait For the ice cream vendor Out into the cool of the evening Strolls the pretender He knows that all his hopes and dreams Begin and end there Ah the laughter of the lovers As they run through the night Leaving nothing for the others But to choose off and fight And tear at the world with all their might While the ships bearing their dreams Sail out of sight Im going to find myself a girl Who can show me what laughter means And we'll fill in the missing colors In each others paint-by-number dreams And then well put out dark glasses on And well make love until our strength is gone And when the morning light comes streaming in Well get up and do it again Get it up again Im going to be a happy idiot And struggle for the legal tender Where the ads take aim and lay their claim To the heart and the soul of the spender And believe in whatever may lie In those things that money can buy Thought true love could have been a contender Are you there? Say a prayer for the pretender Who started out so young and strong Only to surrender

I had never heard that - love the lyrics - just downloaded the song!
Here's a fun one: Lyle Lovett If I Had A Boat If I had a boat I'd go out on the ocean And if I had a pony I'd ride him on my boat And we could all together Go out on the ocean Me upon my pony on my boat If I were Roy Rogers I'd sure enough be single I couldn't bring myself to marrying old Dale It'd just be me and trigger We'd go riding through them movies Then we'd buy a boat and on the sea we'd sail And if I had a boat I'd go out on the ocean And if I had a pony I'd ride him on my boat And we could all together Go out on the ocean Me upon my pony on my boat The mystery masked man was smart He got himself a Tonto 'Cause Tonto did the dirty work for free But Tonto he was smarter And one day said kemo sabe Kiss my ass I bought a boat I'm going out to sea And if I had a boat I'd go out on the ocean And if I had a pony I'd ride him on my boat And we could all together Go out on the ocean Me upon my pony on my boat And if I were like lightning I wouldn't need no sneakers I'd come and go wherever I would please And I'd scare 'em by the shade tree And I'd scare 'em by the light pole But I would not scare my pony on my boat out on the sea And if I had a boat I'd go out on the ocean And if I had a pony I'd ride him on my boat And we could all together Go out on the ocean Me upon my pony on my boat |

Quote:
I think this song and lady both kick a$$: WHY BE BLUE (Carlene Carter) I can’t sleep at night for all the commotion My heart beat the hell out of our devotion Tied up and tied down, cried out of my mind Crazy to love you, crazy still to care Black circles under my eyes You run circles around those other girls’ guys Otherwise a woman would wake up and start a war Why be blue anymore? Refrain: Why be blue over you? Why be blue over you? (Why be blue?) Life is too short to spend in tears Save something sweet for the not-so-tender years Try not to cry much, oh when it’s over Goodbye to you, and goodbye to heartache too (Refrain) Should have seen it coming, should have seen the signs Would have been better off if you’d never ever been mine Otherwise a woman woke up and walked out the door Why be blue anymore?

Here's another one. I'm a huge Lucinda Williams fan and a friend of mine recently lost her mother. This song was especially heartfelt for her and I think it's incredibly touching... Lucinda wrote it re: the death of her own mother...
MAMA YOU SWEET (Lucinda Williams) I love you Mama you sweet I love you Mama you sweet I love you Mama you sweet I love you Mama you sweet I love you Mama you sweet With an ocean in my spirit And cracks on my lips And scars in my heart And this burden on my hips Ocean becomes heavy and tries To push its way out Through these ancient eyes And the memories in my mouth Ocean becomes tears That ebb and flow Over the lines in my face And the pain in my soul And pain hits a wall And doesn't know which way to go And ocean says I'm crying now And tells pain to follow And pain courses through Every vein, every limb Trying to find a way out Between the secrets in my skin And secrets hold on Until they finally give in And they meet up with ocean And tears again And tears hand me a shovel Saying break beneath the crust That binds earthly skin And buries all the trust Somehow trust was caught Between the cracks on my lips And the scars in my heart And this burden on my hips I love you Mama you sweet...

Nico -
Your choices make me smile - when people ask me what kind of music I like I always just answer "good music" - there is no one genre! Another heartbreak song, and seemingly the soundtrack to my life! The Eagles Wasted Time Well baby, there you stand With your little head, down in your hand Oh, my god, you can’t believe it’s happening Again Your baby’s gone, and you’re all alone And it looks like the end. And you’re back out on the street. And you’re tryin’ to remember. How will you start it over? You don’t know what became. You don’t care much for a stranger’s touch, But you can’t hold your man. You never thought you’d be alone this far Down the line And I know what’s been on your mind You’re afraid it’s all been wasted time The autumn leaves have got you thinking About the first time that you fell You didn’t love the boy too much, no, no You just loved the boy to well, farewell So you live from day to day, and you dream About tomorrow, oh. And the hours go by like minutes And the shadows come to stay So you take a little something to Make them go away And I could have done so many things, baby If I could only stop my mind from wondrin’ what I left behind and from worrying ’bout this wasted time Ooh, another love has come and gone Ooh, and the years keep rushing on I remember what you told me before you went out on your own: ’sometimes to keep it together, we got to leave it alone.’ So you can get on with your search, baby, and I can Get on with mine And maybe someday we will find , that it wasn’t really Wasted time Mm,hm Oh hoo, ooh, ohh, Ooh,ooh, mm |

Nico, I'm intrigued with your Jacob/Bob Dylan & Jackson Browne choices! I never knew that offspring of ol' Bobby had such depth to his lyrics ;-)
Brings to mind another in that vein, the great Bruce Springsteen. This song has always been one of my fav Springsteen tunes, it's a sad story but very, very powerful the way he sings it. You can see why people hailed him as the "New Bob Dylan" when this came out circa 1972. I think you'll like it! "For You" Bruce Springsteen Princess cards she sends me with her regards barroom eyes shine vacancy, to see her you gotta look hard Wounded deep in battle, I stand stuffed like some soldier undaunted To her Cheshire smile. I'll stand on file, she's all I ever wanted. But you let your blue walls get in the way of these facts honey, get your carpetbaggers off my back you wouldn't even give me time to cover my tracks. You said, "Here's your mirror and your ball and jacks". But they're not what I came for, and I'm sure you see that too I came for you, for you, I came for you, but you did not need my urgency I came for you, for you, I came for you, but your life was one long emergency and your cloud line urges me, and my electric surges free Crawl into my ambulance, your pulse is getting weak reveal yourself all now to me girl while you've got the strength to speak Cause they're waiting for you at Bellevue with their oxygen masks But I could give it all to you now if only you could ask. And don't call for your surgeon even he says it's too late It's not your lungs this time, it's your heart that holds your fate Don't give me money, honey, I don't want it back you and your pony face and your union jack well take your local joker and teach him how to act I swear I was never that way even when I really cracked Didn't you think I knew that you were born with the power of a locomotive able to leap tall buildings in a single bound? And your Chelsea suicide with no apparent motive you could laugh and cry in a single sound. And your strength is devastating in the face of all these odds Remember how I kept you waiting when it was my turn to be the god? You were not quite half so proud when I found you broken on the beach Remember how I poured salt on your tongue and hung just out of reach And the band they played the homecoming theme as I caressed your cheek That ragged, jagged melody she still clings to me like a leech. But that medal you wore on your chest always got in the way like a little girl with a trophy so soft to buy her way We were both hitchhikers but you had your ear tuned to the roar of some metal-tempered engine on an alien, distant shore So you, left to find a better reason than the one we were living for and it's not that nursery mouth I came back for It's not the way you're stretched out on the floor cause I've broken all your windows and I've rammed through all your doors And who am I to ask you to lick my sores? And you should know that's true... I came for you, for you, I came for you, but you did not need my urgency I came for you, for you, I came for you, but your life was one long emergency and your cloud line urges me, and my electric surges free Copyright © Bruce Springsteen (ASCAP) |

Here's another sad tale, by one of my all-time favorite artists, Peter Gabriel. Many of his songs are very deep, emotional stories that are so full of imagery that each song is like a mini-movie. Even though I like happy, upbeat songs most of the time, the ones that stand out always seem to be songs that stir the emotions (my best friend thinks my music taste is MOR, but I think she'll change her mind eventually!
)"Here Comes The Flood" Peter Gabriel When the night shows The signals grow on radios All the strange things They come and go as early warnings Stranded starfish have no place to hide Still waiting for the swollen Easter tide There's no point in direction we cannot even choose a side I took the old track The hollow shoulder, across the waters On the tall cliffs They were getting older, sons and daughters The jaded underworld was riding high Waves of steel hurled metal at the sky And as the nails sunk in the cloud, the rain was warm And soaked the crowd Lord, here comes the flood We'll say goodbye to flesh and blood If again the seas are silent In any still alive It'll be those who gave their island to survive Drink up, dreamers, you’re running dry When the flood calls You have no home, you have no walls In the thunder crash You're a thousand minds, within a flash Don't be afraid to cry at what you see The actors gone, there's only you and me And if we break before the dawn, they'll use up what We used to be Lord here comes the flood We'll say goodbye to flesh and blood If again the seas are silent In any still alive It'll be those who gave their island to survive Drink up, dreamers, you're running dry Lord here comes the flood We'll say goodbye to flesh and blood If again the seas are silent In any still alive It'll be those who gave their island to survive Drink up, dreamers, you're running dry Drink up, dreamers, you're running dry |

shebop: I've loved all your choices as well! I am such a classic rock fan, so bring them on!
3rd World Man: Your choices are wonderful- what a beastly friend is this...my goodness, MOR... send them some CDs and tell them to shove it. ![]() ![]() ![]() One of my favorite songs ever. DOWNLOAD THIS!!! DANCING BAREFOOT (Patti Smith) She is benediction she is addicted to thee she is the root connection she is connecting with he here I go and I don't know why I fell so ceaselessly could it be he's taking over me... I'm dancing barefoot heading for a spin some strange music draws me in makes me come on like some heroin/e she is sublimation she is the essence of thee she is concentrating on he, who is chosen by she here I go and I don't know why I spin so ceaselessly, could it be he's taking over me... [chorus] she is re-creation she, intoxicated by thee she has the slow sensation that he is levitating with she ... here I go and I don't know why, I spin so ceaselessly, 'til I lose my sense of gravity... [chorus] (oh god I fell for you ...) the plot of our life sweats in the dark like a face the mystery of childbirth, of childhood itself grave visitations what is it that calls to us? why must we pray screaming? why must not death be redefined? we shut our eyes we stretch out our arms and whirl on a pane of glass an afixiation a fix on anything the line of life the limb of a tree the hands of he and the promise that s/he is blessed among women. (oh god I fell for you ...)
