Speaking of... a few days ago at work I heard a cover version of Stand Back. It was on commercial Top 40 radio, but I couldn't place it at all. Am I that out of the loop that I missed a cover of Stand Back doing the rounds?

That must be Rod Stewart's version of the song. It's on his album 'The Leas Singer'...

/me has to confess that it's in his collection

It may be Linus Loves (featuring Sam Obernik). My gym used to play it all the time. There is a video of it on youtube.

The voice matches I think, but I couldn't hear that well because there was quite some noise at the time. The music was much closer to the original though, not as remix-y as this version.

It surprised me because it got played alongside the likes of Keane, Amy Whinehouse, Racoon and whoever else is hot right now. That's what made me wonder if it was a recent cover that I wasn't aware of.

I just saw an acoustic version of Nightbird and Dreams on Youtube by Lily Wilson http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-8DTP9-kXY
I thought it was an EXCELLENT cover of a Stevie song. Not as good as the original of course but very good. She makes it her own.

I agree. That is quite nice.

I have also really enjoyed these "Bill" renditions, but no one can replace Stevie or FM on any of them for me.

I have the Rumours tribute CD and Elton John's Don't Stop is kind of cool.

I ran across this one by a vocal groupe called Gregorian, Masters of Chant. They did a version of Dreams I realy like. This groupe takes pop songs and sets them to the Gregorian Chant scale of music. Its real interesting stuff.

How odd. Does that mean the song is sung monophonically -- that is, as a single melody (no harmony) with all voices in unison? or is the chord progression turned modal? In the case of DREAMS, it's really already modal. It's the old church mode of mixolydian (although Stevie didn't intend to do that) -- it's an F major scale with the 4th raised by a half step (which you hear when the song moves to a G chord). Well, whatever. I'll listen to it on iTunes.

Edit: I didn't find DREAMS, but I found some audio on this site:
http://www.gregorianmastersofchant.com/Media.htm

Hmmm . . . .
