I'm not as good as many of you at keeping track of the years and label numbers of specific demos. The comments on the above video say that it's the RAL version. I really can't stand how often she goes off-key in it. But my very favorite version of the song (and maybe my favorite Stevie song of all) is also clearly a RAL version with a similar arrangement - but definitely not the same exact instrumental track (similar keyboard, no piano) - but with a cooler (and even raspier) vocal - far superior to any of the other versions I've heard. I don't have it on this laptop to post for comparison, but I'm guessing some of you demo scholars know exactly which one I mean just from my short description. I know from previous threads that there are several versions of LFTM. I have maybe 8 or 9, but I remember reading that someone claimed to having heard around 35. All this time I've referred to the version I like as "the" RAL version, but it seems that other folks have a similar impression of the one in the video. Is there a (commonly recognized) specific name, date, or number (such as Version 18 of 35) to distinguish between the two versions? Thanks in advance. - Jake

I know which your talking about, and it is my absolute favorite too. I put it on my first Stevie "rare music" cds years ago. But, I have no additional info. But def. better than this version.

I have never heard this "Lady From the Mountain", that is in this YouTube video picture montage. I think it is great. Does anyone possibly have this version that is in this YouTube video that would be kind to post it? I would love to add this to my growing SN/FM music collection. Many thanks to all of the you that share these songs!

I suppose we could first identify the instruments of the various demos. Sometimes that helps pin down time.

Thank You so much for posting this Lady of the Mountain demo! I feel like I've discovered a treasure trove of SN/FM music here. Even though many of these are demos, such an abundance of music most of the world will never hear. I love these unfinished songs, so beautiful and raw.

One big plus to this version compared to the one in the above video is the timing of the "So go...with her" part. Also, the vocal is more on-key and less flat at the ends of lines. And the "oooohs" and guitar are much smoother in their build-ups. Plus the tempo is livelier. So yeah, you can say I love this version. ![]() - Jake

Now that we know the version I meant, does anybody here have a count of how many LFTM demos/outtakes are out there?

I'm sorry, but I'm really not hearing her go off-key in this version of LFTM. This is a typical RAL-era vocal, she may be raggedy and bellowy in some spots, breathy and shuddery in others, but I don't hear 'off key' at least in the way I sort of 'think' off-key is supposed to sound.
I'm no musical scholar of course, but wouldn't Alfalfa crooning 'Let Me Call You Sweetheart' from the old 'Our Gang' shorts be a real example of off-key? Or, maybe the Susan Alexander character warbling opera from 'Citizen Kane'? |

I think this showed up on a "master reel" comp called 1/20/86.
