Some woman on the boat to Ellis Island almost ruined my day. My mom and I were looking out the window as we passed the Statue of Liberty. And my mom innocently says "Ohh, I remember seeing a program on channel 13 about how they built the statue. It was a present from France." So, I said "Yes, but they didn't provide the pedestal." This woman next to my mother rolls her eyes and huffed and said out loud in our direction "It was a gift to the American Government."
So I looked at her and said "True. But it is a fact that when we agreed to accept it we knew that the pedestal was not part of the gift and we had to raise funds to build it ourselves."
And she sort of laughed sarcastically to her boyfriend or whatever and huffed out loud "At least they gave something." And she was sort of rolling her eyes and shaking her head to her boyfriend as if to say "well I really told HIM off."

That reminds me of a conversation I overheard at the St. Louis Arch a few years ago. This woman, from wherever, was going on about how the Arch is the tallest structure in North America. When I interjected that there are many taller buildings, namely the Sears Tower and the Empire State Building, she grew visibly irritated and
insisted that the Arch was taller (which, at 630-something feet, is definitely not), and then just turned away like I wasn't there. People believe what they want to believe, I guess...

And, to make matters worse, she was wearing BLACK leather pants with a BROWN suede jacket. What kind of a hooker dresses like that?
