Why not say "I sometimes have trouble interpreting you. I fall into the vat of misunderstanding."? Although I like that I have to look up words to understand you. I don't think there's a verb for hermeneutical though, at least not according to m-w.com.

Because then there's no joke. The joke is that I'm telling Carrie I don't understand her in a way that itself can't be understood or even parsed traditionally.

I'm being silly & goofy there too. You're reading me too literalmindedly. I infuse an overwhelming dose of what the French call jouissance. I bestow both pleasure & pain. I tread a harrowingly fine line between prose & poetry. I speak in prose poetry (See John Simon's "The Prose Poem as a Genre in England, France & Germany" published by Garland). My Ledge posting style is strongly influenced by Sterne, especially by "Tristram Shandy" -- not the English language's first but certainly one of its wildest cock & bull stories.

You know what? After I wrote my response was when I got the joke. I thought you were just showing off but there's more to it than that.

It's from the movie "Tristram Shandy: A Cock & Bull Story" directed by Michael Winterbottom. I recommend it WITH reservations. The first half hour or so was quite good: a witty adaptation of the Sterne work with a contemporary feel & a humorously knowing wink. But
the movie split in two: half of it continued to follow Sterne & the other half turned cock 'n' bull with the movie production company filming the scenario on location. It's all an unusual experiment in storytelling & framing; the two elements swap their traditional places. But I wanted more of the Sterne & less of the film company -- the jokes are a lot better in the former, as you would probably guess, & the latter element palls well before the end credits. Obviously, Winterbottom's point, such as it is, is to reveal the bits of Tristram Shandy & Captain Toby & so forth in all of us, &c. But, really, so what? It's an excellent cast, at any rate, particularly the guys -- although Gillian Anderson has a superb cameo & the best punchline.

Right now, I'm watching "The Day After Tomorrow." It's rotten. It's nothing but a video game; its effects are video-game effects, it has the tempo of a video game, & it has the jerky, childish, druggy kineticism of a video game. The fact that there are a few actors (a very few) standing around delivering dialog means nothing. If all movies were like this, there would be no art form. Whatever you'd call it might still be massively popular, but not worth thinking about or writing about or studying or being swept up in. "The Day After Tomorrow" is a very fancy giant mechanism of some sort, grinding away, & nothing looks or sounds or feels real about it. After awhile, it doesn't even seem very fancy any more. It just feels cruddy. One thing happens after another, but there's nothing for me to care about. These aren't characters -- these aren't even cardboard cutouts.

It also has just about the rottenest title you could possibly think of. What a dud from top to bottom. Sometimes movie titles don't make sense & are nevertheless supposed to, & sometimes they don't make sense by design. "Krakatoa: East of Java," for example, is just a foolish mistake, Homer nodding, asleep at the switch, that kind of thing. Not only is the volcano not east of Java, but it isn't even called Krakatoa -- it's properly called Krakatau.

I was also wondering about the title "It Happened One Night," a movie of great charm & one of the high points of '30s comedy. I'm not sure what the significance is of that title -- it sounds a little like the childhood tale introduction: Once upon a time; Many years ago; It happened once that . . . in French, Il était une fois . . .

Some titles are carried over from literary properties, even if the source itself is only very loosely adapted -- like "To Have & Have Not." It made sense in the Hemingway novel because of the importance of the Depression in the story, but it means nothing in the movie. Better to have borrowed Slim's immortal line & called it "To Buy a New Hat."

I think we should make a topic for each of these for her. I really like them. But whoever starts it has to make sure to honor kathy in the most kathy like way in their post. That means no capital letters!
