Default "Thriller," released in Nov. 1982, just out in 25th anniversary ed.

So sad that something that started cool, ended that way, so weird and freak..

NEW YORK (AP) -- Michael Jacksn appeared in a video to thank fans for the success of "Thriller," the landmark record the reclusive singer is marking with a 25th anniversary edition.

Jackson will release the new version of the blockbuster album Tuesday, featuring new collaborations with Kanye West, Akon, Fergie and will.i.am.

"It's hard to believe that 25 years ago Quincy Jones and I embarked on an album named 'Thriller,' " Jackson said in a video message to fans released Monday by his record company, Sony-BMG.

It was not immediately clear exactly when Jackson had made the video, or where it was recorded. He also hinted that he's not through recording music.

"There is still much for to come for Michael Jackson," he said. "My passion for music has never stopped. ... It's my hope that 'Thriller' continues to live on for each new generation to discover."

Jackson, 49, soared to superstardom after releasing "Thriller" in November 1982. The instant classic spawned the hits "Billie Jean," "Beat It" and -- of course -- "Thriller," and introduced the moonwalk to legions of fans all around the world.

"To be able to say that 'Thriller' still holds the record as the biggest selling album of all time is just mind-blowing. I have you, my fans, throughout the world to thank for this achievement," said Jackson, who has sold more than 750 million albums worldwide.

Thank you VillaVic for reminding me JUST how old I am getting. First MTV w/ their whoopty-do anniversary rub it in my face, and now this! Jeesh!
WOW, I mean can you all remember what a phenomena this was when it came out? Hit after hit. You couldn't escape it, but you also didn't want to. Damnit, it was good! I LOVED that album when it came out. I revisited it a while ago, and it's as catchy today as it was then. A LITTLE bit dated, but not terribly so.
I must add, wtf is it with something that did so well needing to be re-packaged over and over? It's already been re-released once that I know of. Souped up and such. And now this. Hmm, a nod to FM & Rumours?? lol.
Re-mixing the album w/ new stars and such does little for me. Why mess with a good thing. Likely it'll get a whole new generation into MJ though. Strange, strange little man, but mad talent!

Some friends of mine have been in the Thriller live musical over here in the UK. They have been doing some random Thriller dances around London to mark the anniversary and to promote the show:

I *do* remember how huge this all was. In 1982, I was 14 and while I didn't want to admit I liked it- I did. My personal favorite was Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'

I liked it and felt weird about it too but I was 11. It was just good. But it was apparent to me something was off about him. A girl in my class actually wrote a novella about her romance with him. I really didn't get having a crush on him. I assumed he was gay. I think my favorite is Billie Jean.

I wonder if that effects her today
Thats too funny though.

I, not being alive in 1982, have no idea how huge Jacksonmania was then. Nor would I be interested in knowing. I do like some of his songs though. Billie Jean is good, Beat It is cool-I just found out that Eddie Van Halen had something to do with that song. [Van Halen is kickbutt!] Thriller itself is that 80s bred pop, I love how theyre using it for the Sobe Life Water.

I also like Smooth Criminal [not on Thriller. oh well], but Alien Ant Farms version is superior in my eyes.

I have no idea why they had to ruin the orginal product by adding guest apparences on it, I listened to the 30 sec sample of Beat It with Fergie on iTunes, and she ruins the song.

Now if Kanye did his rap to PYT....mixed with the original...that would be hott!

ha haa!! we are, my friend.. we are getting old..

And though Thriller was the most selling album, I think (at least in Peru), that the Saturday Night / Bee Gees fever was larger and bigger.. It was almost sicking.. you could listen Bee Gees songs every hour.. every day.. you change a radio station and it was 100% probable you could find a bee gees song on any radio..

And.. if I remember Bee Gees fever in 1978.. then I could be older than you...

I was soooo into it. My brother & I both had those faux leather jackets that looked just like MJ's (F off, I was 7!) I can vividly recall watching whichever awards show he first did the moonwalk at - me, my brother & my dad started yelling & pointing "OMG, did you see that?!?!" I have some really good memories of my youth from that era. I LOVED Say Say Say.

Too bad he's so f'd up now.

Steven A. Smith talked about this anniversary re-release today on his radio program. He also said that was when Michael Jackson was still a "brother". He replayed Jackson's pathetic 60 Minutes interview with Ed Bradley

I used to love the video for Say Say Say -- he and Paul McCartney selling some liquid that supposedly made you stronger!

Do you remember from back in the early 80's when they'd have MJ specials on TV - like on ABC or something? My parents still have on VHS like 2 different shows that they taped. I wanna say one had all of his videos at the time -- I know it had Say Say Say, Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, I Wanna Rock With You. Another one was maybe a concert? I can't really remember. Hmm, next time I'm at my parents' house I'll have to go through those tapes.

And I agree with you about happy memories from that era. I can't believe I can still remember watching those videos as well as The Wizard of Oz that they recorded off of TV - I remember what I think was the Jackson 5 doing a Pepsi commercial, Webster doing some fish sticks commercial, and Like Cola (the little Un-cola). Ah, memories...

Brad

guess what?

I reviewed this for my school newspaper. I was getting hounded to pick something for a music review [my column] and something different than my past reviews, so I just did this. My review came out quite good if anybody cares to read it. I do get a word limit though, so its only like 400 words unfortunately.
