Default Sharon and Lori vocals on 'Silver Girl'?

I know there is no album credit for this, but tucked deep into the lush background, I wonder if they layered in a little Sharon and Lori. It's not completely impossible, right? Does anyone else hear this?

Could be, Pete. I'm not sure. Few people want to get that close to that particular track. You know, when Fleetwood Mac cuts an album, it seems virtually anyone hanging around, or even in neighboring counties (as long as they have their cell phones with them), might end up somewhere in the gravy. And I mean gravy, too. You can distinguish one chef's gravy from another chef's gravy, but just try to identify a single chef's contribution to a saucepan of gravy & differentiate it from another chef's contribution. Some folks still think Tom Moncrieff is playing bass on Sara.

Speaking of gravy, Pete, there's nothing like a good sodium-rich dip of au jus with one's sandwich of thin-sliced brisket on french roll.

I know, 'Silver Girl' isn't exactly a fan favorite. But I kinda/sorta like it. But then again, I like alot of songs that some consider turkeys like 'Kick It' or 'Blue Denim'.

That thinly sliced brisket glistening with beef fat on a toasted French roll is giving me pangs of longing, as I re-dedicated myself to vegetarian living last year. Shame on you David, I was just reconciling myself to eating some of this plain sauteed spinach before I leave the office tonight.

Well congratulations on your re-dedication! I just cannot believe that picture provoked anything but nausea... I know that I lost my taste for meat completely within three months. This year marks 20 years of my being meat-free! Praise Seitan!

I always assumed that Sheryl Crow was somewhere on this track; after all, the song is about her. But then again, you can never tell what that LiddyBuck is doing with that vari-speed oscillator thingamajiggywhose-it he uses on everything. He could probably manipulate Stevie's voice into sounding like Maria Callas.

Are the oscillators still in use? Today is the computer chip age in the recording studio. It seems as if virtually all of the equipment of the analog age has been duplicated with mouse pointers & clicks (events) on today's workstations. You can play a Hammond B3 today, replete with all its trademark features & flaws (key clicks, attack & decay, growl, stops, flutter, etc.) on a PC program with nothing but a bunch of OK, Select & Save buttons & drop-down lists.

You know, there's no telling what he's up to these days. I wouldn't be surprised if they get the computer stuff in there at some point, but I believe we did see him splicing some tape on the Destiny Rules doc. LB's got tricks.. I bet he's not in a hurry to ditch the technology of yesterday, even if computers make it happen in one or two steps. He likes to turn the knobs "until it sounds right", ya know.

As for Sharon & Lori on Silver Girl... I have no idea. I won't listen to that P.O.S. excuse for a FM song again to find out.

I don't think that there is too much computer stuff that would be a replacement for the oscillators and/or just speeding up the tape. I have stuff that can change the formant of a voice which sounds like a tape being sped up but it just doesn't sound as good as the things LB does with analogue stuff.

I think it's pretty common. Pro Tools does all that stuff, & that's just one popular example. I'm looking at the Pro Tools 5.1.x manual now. That's why I wonder just how many professionals would use old speed or frequency oscillators. Maybe someone like Lindsey would, out of familiarity & old habit. But take the last FM album: Lindsey was co-working with several other men, like Mark Needham. Those guys know all the latest technology.

Partially a question of quality of the technology ($20,000 tool is going to sound better than a $1,000 tool, which has always been generally true) & the usual divide in preference among musicians for one thing over another. (If you read user reviews on Harmony Central for the hundreds of different workstations, synthesizers, keyboards, etc., trying to get a feel for which one to buy yourself, you'll just scream in frustration.)

What stuff does Pro Tools have to do it? I know of plenty of things that can do it outside Pro Tools but I still don't think any of the digital frequency oscillation things are as good as just speeding up a tape for the kind of manipulations Lindsey would do. Overall they are probably more flexible and faster than the old stuff but I agree that it's unlikely Lindsey would be using them because he knows what he's doing with the old stuff and it saves him learning all this new stuff. Then again, he could have jumped on them as soon as they first became available.

I think it's really creepy how Lindsey can manipulate his voice to sound like Stevie's and vice versa....

Is Silver Girl really about Sheryl?
