Thumbs up The Stephen King Thread

Are any of you all fans of his work?

I have read, Salem's Lot, Carrie, and Bag of Bones and recently purchased Dreamcatcher.

For Christmas Break I plan on starting IT and I am very excited about it.

Bag of Bones was my favorite.

Have any of you all read his work or whatnot? Feel free to discuss.

I read The Stand after seeing the TV mini series, and I enjoyed that book. I guess I couldnt be considered a fan though, since I've not read any other novels by him. I have seen The Shining, and other various movies of his. I watched Kingdom Hospital which is strange because i'm not a TV junkie (for some reason I got hooked, I had to find out what happened).

The Mist, however, is a great movie. A little...mmm...whats the word...production wise it isnt great. It kind of looks like a B-movie...but everything you've heard about the ending is true. SO GO SEE IT.

I've read Insomnia, loved it, but don't plan on reading anymore of his novels.

ps...I have seen bits of "It"...and since I friggin hate clowns I wont be watching it again, or reading the novel. Maybe Pennywise is the cause of my fear!

never read any of his books, but have seen some popular movies based on his novels. Carrie, the Green Mile, Creepshow(funny), Misery, The Shining, Stand by me (based on the Body).

STand by me was a beautiful movie, anything but a thriller (isn't King famous by his horror and thriller novels??). And The Shining was the best thriller!!!

Now, don't take this the wrong way, but I never understood people's fear of clowns. Could you maybe fill me in as to what exactly make them so scary.

Yeah, I haven't seen any of the movies but would like to at some point.

Those of you who have read IT, is it scary and if so, what is the scare element in it?

I used to be a big SK fan- I have probably read everything he's written (except for, surprisingly, The Dark Tower series- could NOT get into them). I started reading his books when I was a teenager and stuck with him. I definitely have not loved everything he's done, but there are many books of his that I really enjoyed. The Talisman (written with Peter Straub) is one of my favorites.

It is a great book (the movie was horrible, as are most SK adaptations). The scare factor comes from remembering what it's like to be a child. I think clowns are just more creepy than scary?

I guess its like little kids that are afraid to sit on Santas lap. I was always afraid of people in big fuzzy costumes. Like, if we went to Disney I never wanted to get near any of the costumed Disney characters. Anyway...its more of a joking thing now, but I wouldnt want to actually get near a clown, or talk to it or anything. The thought occurs to me now as I'm older (which makes it scarier)...what kind of person would it take to have "clown" as a career choice? Yeah. SCARY. But hey, if you're making a buck then dont mind my silly clown hatred.

I heard the other day that people fear things they find death in.

I personally do find death in clowns. and am quite afraid of them.

true story.

[its worse being tall in a school of short kids, they all fear you. haha]

But anyway, I reccomend watching the movie 'Carrie'. I liked it, and actually, now that you mention it, I kindof want to see it again.

the IT movie was ok. I found it lame when I first saw it, but I was like 12, so yeah.

I have never read any of SKs books, but have heard many good things. I dont do horror stuff, so it's more than likely I never will read any of his books, nor watch any of his other movies.

Oh, actually, didnt he write that book 'Christine' about the car?

Because I have seen the movie that goes with it [I think the name had something to do with it...] but anway, I enjoyed that movie, and wouldn't mind reading the book.

I'm a huge fan of his work and he's one of my favorite authors. I think he's an extremely wise man in some ways and I feel like I learn a lot from him; plus he's one d**m entertaining storyteller i.m.o.

He's like the Energizer Bunny, he just keeps going and going. I've read Rage, The Long Walk, The Regulators, Carrie, Salem's Lot, The Shining, The Stand, The Dead Zone, Firestarter, Pet Sematary, Cycle of the Werewolf, The Dark Half, Needful Things, Gerald's Game, Dolores Claiborne, Insomnia, Rose Madder, The Green Mile, Bag of Bones, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, and the Dark Tower series.

So, NO, i've barely read any of his stuff!

(LOTS of it is on the back burner - including much of his newer stuff - I'm "frighteningly behind" in my reading.)

b.t.w. I seem to remember that there was a "triple dream" sequence in Bag of Bones - - - I thought that was amazing!

I love that line at the beginning, "he found he could make it up the stairs after all." And I love the passage he did later describing one of the evil "Fate" character's lair. ( "rattles and radios . . . they were really all the same thing" . . . then something about "a life cut too short . . . His last thought was of ice cream." King really "went for the jugular" there.

Yeah, but it kind of got a little confusing there for awhile. BUT, this was by far my FAVE SK novel.

I thought Carrie was a better movie than The Shining, but I wouldn't dare tell the Kubrick fanatics that.

Spielberg & Tobe Hooper tapped into that in Poltergeist. I think of clowns both ways: the Poltergeist way but also the Fellini/La Strada way.
