But. It still sold 850k+ copies, and still stands a chance to go platinum over the next several years. It's not exactly a disgrace.
And I could not possibly disagree more about an album being too long. If I'm paying almost 20 bucks for a cd, the more music they cram on it, the better. I don't understand where people get off on wanting less new music. At all. It'd be awesome if it wasn't **** like Silver Girl, but I can excuse that for 17 other at least fairly decent songs. As far as solo records mashed together with Fleetwood/McVie - what's new about that? Shouldn't we be used to that by now? ![]()

Nope, despite it being the reality of the situation, doesn't mean I have to LIKE it. Write some damned material FOR the band or get the hell OUT of the band and get people who WILL. Or, just kill off the band and ONLY do solo albums.

Who said anything about whether or not you like it? I said "used to" it. If you don't like the album, that's your problem.

I'm not judging SYW on sales. I think that has nothing to do with success (the way I define it anyway). I just think, compared to other Mac albums...and the amount of time they had to work on it that it could've been a better record. I really believe that Christine's absence has a lot to do with it. That being said, I'd rather have SOME incarnation of Fleetwood Mac than none at all. I also would rather see them release more albums than tour so much.

Didn't say anything about liking or disliking the album, I dislike the SITUATION that the only material used for Fleetwood Mac albums involving Lindsey Buckingham & Stevie Nicks is leftover solo material. I wish they'd just go away so Mick & John can find people who WANT to be members of Fleetwood Mac.

And as far as SYW not having the vibe of the White Album, Rumours, and Tusk being a band effort... that's a given. It's also a given that it isn't coming back.

This is my favorite band. I'm not going to sit here and say that I hope they never make a record as a band ever again. Even if the band vibe doesn't come back. Even a mediocre effort by Fleetwood Mac is better than a true effort by a lot of other groups. A couple weak spots don't cause me to say "SYW is a dud album". It's not a perfect album, but it's not crap either.

Say You Will is a very weird album in that it's quite possibly the only BuckinghamNicks involved Fleetwood Mac album where I "like" every song. On Rumours I almost always skip I Don;t Want To Know, and their very best album and the best album by anyone Tusk, I have to skip Never Make Me Cry. Mirage and Tango in the Night, forget them I have to skip half the songs. On Say You Will, Every single song is good to me. I'll occaisionly skip a few of the songs but not because I don't like them. I like all 18 SYW songs. But to look at it another way if I were to list my top 10 or even top 20 favorite fleetwood mac songs, i don't think any from Say You Will would make that list. Thrown Down, Illume, Murrow, WTWCT and Destiny Rules would all be close and easy contenders for top 30
but my point is, I like every song, there are 18 good songs but very few great ones and even fewer Really great ones. Meanwhile TISL contained in my opinion 2 or 3 Stevie songs that are among her very very best (TISL, Fall From Grace and Sorcerer) 2 of which are amazing live tracks that are now staples for her. SYW and Goodbye Baby were not showstoppers like FFG and Sorcerer can be. So I think this may proove Chili's point of they're not bringing their A game to Fleetwood Mac.

Going back to post-solo album releases, "Straight Back" was definitely written for Fleetwood Mac (at one point, Stevie even thought it was going to be the title track). "When I See You Again" ("I just sent them a song the day before yesterday -- a 'Landslide' kind of song -- and they liked it"), "No Questions Asked," "Paper Doll," "Freedom," "Love Is Dangerous," and "The Second Time," also all seem to have been written for the band. So, yeah, some of them are "leftovers" from solo albums she's working on at the time, but she definitely still writes certain songs with an ear to Fleetwood Mac.

Anyone who thinks that SYW was a commercial disappointment is either a moron or otherwise intellectually deficient.
Sales were beyond all (record label) expectations, and were nowhere near anything dissapointing. |

I would never wish for less songs from a Fleetwood Mac release -- since the years between their releases get longer and longer...and they aren't getting any younger. I am very grateful they (at least Lindsey) thought out of the box and gave us what amounts to - in vinyl terms - a double album. Yet, because of the volume, many songs got lost in mix. If it had been parred down it would have been less weighty, giving some of the better songs room to breathe. They could have planned for a deluxe version of Say You Will that had all the other songs on a bonus disc. I see that happening alot these day.

You know, I don't think SYW was a critical disappointment by any stretch of the imagination. Commercially? Um, I think some people did experience a let down. As for the label . . . I don't know what to think. I was surprised that Lindsey got the go ahead for not one but TWO solo albums. That did lead me to think that maybe they were indulging him to guarantee future FM endeavors. So, maybe Reprise didn't think SYW was a total waste. Good news for us. Michele |
