Default Hall of Fame Nominations

This is the worst batch yet!!!
Change the name to the Music Hall of Fame... Until then let's remember it's the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME:

Rock And Roll HOF
Nominations Are In
Updated 09:33 PDT Fri, Sep 28 2007
(Associated Press) Here's something Madonna can really celebrate: a nomination to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Madge joins heartland rocker John Mellencamp, the puckish rappers Beastie Boys and premier dance acts Donna Summer and Chic among the nine nominees for the hall. The five leading vote-getters will be inducted in the annual ceremony March 10, 2008 at New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel.
The other nominees are rap pioneer Afrika Bambaataa, literate songwriter Leonard Cohen, the original British Invasion combo The Dave Clark Five and surf rock instrumentalists The Ventures.
The nominations illustrate how far the Hall of Fame has stretched its definition of rock 'n' roll to incorporate a variety of musical styles. It's certainly the case with Madonna, the Detroit-area native who burst out of New York dance clubs in the early 1980s with "Holiday" and soon became a pop culture icon. She scored 17 Top Ten hits in the 1980s alone and is due to put out an album next year, working with the likes of Timbaland and Justin Timberlake.
The Beastie Boys molded punk rock and rap into the goofy hit "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right to Party." They became critical favorites and are still together, releasing an instrumental album this year.
Indiana's own Mellencamp can fill a barrel with rock hits like "Hurts So Good," "Pink Houses" and "R.O.C.K. in the USA." Like Chic and the Dave Clark Five, he's been nominated before without getting into the hall.
Some 500 musicians, industry professionals and journalists vote on the inductions.

I don't know...

I am ok with all except Madonna. I mean, I think she should be in, but not just yet. not while people like Stevie and others aren't in there yet.

The other nominees are rap pioneer Afrika Bambaataa, literate songwriter Leonard Cohen, the original British Invasion combo

Madonna - Yes. She's had a big enough impact. I like some of her early stuff okay... and I do like her voice, even if the new era of songs haven't been my favorites. I'd say she's deserving.

Beastie Boys - Yes. They've had an impact, and the last time I was at the RRHoF&M there was an exhibit about turntabilism, freestyle, etc.. Beastie Boys fit perfectly with the artists that were honored in that, so I'd say there's a place for them as well.

Mellencamp - No. No, no, no. Just no. Boring. Generic. No impact. No inspiration. Please go away. Just go the hell away.

Donna Summer - I'm on the fence here. Part of me says yes, part of me says no. I think there needs to be a dance music hall of fame, tbh... but that kind of goes against what dance music is about... celebrating the underground, etc.

Chic - No. Nile Rodgers, absolutely hell yes... but as a producer. Yes, Chic songs were good, but there are other dance/funk acts on the same level. I personally believe they're only getting the nod because of Nile. He is deserving in that, anyone he works with and everything he does is going to sound good. Any other collection of people would have the hits that Chic did because of him. That's jmo.

The Dave Clark Five - Absolutely. WTF took so long?

The Ventures - *hell yes*. This is what the RRHoF is about.

Afrika Bambaataa - I have to say yes, but really just because I said yes to the Beastie Boys. Admitting the BBs and leaving out a true, early, rap/hip hop pioneer like Bambaataa would be a slap in the face to the genre. I'm glad they have some respect, even if the tracks are farrrr too old school for me to enjoy.

Leonard Cohen - I'm saying no, just because I can't stand his voice, but whatever. Gotta have one for the snobs.

Um... I thought that, in order to be eligible, you had to have released your first recording at least 25 years earlier. Did I miss something? I believe the Beastie Boys' first album was "Licensed to Ill" in 1987. If they released something in 1982, I certainly am not aware of it.

I can think of even more bands not in who should be before this bumper crop of losers, save maybe for Cat Stevens.

Iggy & The Stooges
Yes
Genesis
King Crimson
Rush
The Guess Who (or at least Randy Bachman)
Kiss

Donna Summer has more than 25 years of career. She should be inducted since long ago
Cool if she finally is!

I read on another site that the Beastie Boys released their first EP in 82. I think it would be interesting if Madonna and BB got in at the same time, given:

those who live in pink houses shouldn't throw stones right?

I never was a big fan but i do know alot of his radio stuff and i can certainly see your point but . . . {big argumentative storm clouds blowing in} . . .
Though he didn't really make a big connection with me i feel he has had a big impact on the Farm Aid Circuit and he really has quite a following of people that he has connected to and worked to help them. Maybe i wouldn't let him in on music alone personally, but there are many folks who swear by him and who he seems to have impacted and he seems a decent dude so i say open up and let him in.
plus he is closer to rock and roll than most on that list.

won't you melt your ice cold heart?

No. Wrong. CougieMellenball has had many, many deep thoughts disguised as paprock. Pink Houses is sublime. Only album I ever saw my mom buy, and she is purposefully non shallow.

Truth be spoken simply but sublimely by CougyMellenball. Lyrics to Pink Houses and Jack and Diane rate among the best, in addition to some of his other lyrics which do so also, but not as notably. Plus, he just rocks. It's just plain good rock, with good words. Not so simple as to be inconsequential, not deep enough to be nerd/esoteric rock.

Just. Perfect. Regular. Rock. Plainspoken good sounding. Deep without obviously seeming so. It's real, it's a genre, it's valuable and talented. He has good bands and good backup singers.
You don't always have to send up fireworks to make a great point with a great sound. You don't always have to flip and complicate your words to make them meaningful (Linds!).

And that - THAT! - is the essence of Cougarmelloncamp. Clean, simple, good, yet subtly compelling in it's simplicity, and apropos (true) in his points.

Plus great harmonies, melodies, and bandwork. He really is a prime example of simple yet great rock.
Sorry, if people mess with the Melloncougar, I have to defend. In part because he is easy to discount, but not deserving of discounting. Go back, listen to Papah and Fiyah. My god, the point he is making with the words, and the chick he chose to do a fantastic harmony on it! Extremely compelling. And the notes his band played, and the notes he sang. Truly great. This song makes me think every time I hear it, and it also makes me rock. Think and rock. Just pure joy.

Listen to the lyrics of Pink Houses (a personal anthem of mine). Look me in the eye and tell me that life doesn't go on even after the thrill of livin' is gone. Do it. Try. Try to resist the beat and the voice when the Walls Come Tumblin' Down. And try to pretend that his duet with Me'Shell Ndegeocello on the Van Morrison classic wasn't a good idea. Me'Shell is playing here in a couple days, she is a huge talent, I will see her, his decision to play with her was flawless.
Gold. I urge anyone to revisit his words, even if they don't like his sound. Simple depth, is what he espouses. Plainspoken truth, in a just clever enough to be subtley original. Plainspoken yet original, could you ask for more?
Plus, he is a Libra like Linds, and Bruce, and Tom P, and...uh...Gwen...and...superfluous aside over. Just saying, he isn't as simple as he seems. And I should know. You know how TP makes the most regular points, yet it has so much emotional resonance? Yeah, like that.

Sorry, I just love the Cougarmellon. I see his limitations, but I think I recognize his value more than most, and it is real. In short, don't mess with the CougieMellon unless you want an argument.

She's totally in, but not before Stevie. Not in anyone's imagination. Both have awesome vocal virtuosity, but Stevie has even more than that.

I'm not sure anyone is legally allowed to leave out Cohen, L. It's like that thing where you may disagree, but you can't really fight it. It almost has the weight of a legal prohibition.

Leonard Cohen? Fantastic!!
He is, without a doubt, one of the great poets of our generation.
A true legend.

The Beastie Boys originally started off as a 4 piece punk rock band back in 1981, so they did release independent albums before they took off for bigger/better things.

The thinking seems to be, among some fans & members of the voting panel, that if you've done your time (25 years), you get inducted. Won't virtually all recognizable names sooner or later be inducted? Outside of marketing & brouhaha & a TV show you can broadcast every year, I just don't see what the actual purpose is to this hall of fame. Traditionally, halls of fame are reserved for the cream of the crop, the best of the best, whether it's baseball or music or fiction-writing. You can always argue about the choices; there's no last word. But if you look at the inductees from 1986 to 2000, just about every act with a name is there. The same thing is liable to be true for the 1970s & the 1980s when enough time has passed.

lmao, I am not going to argue back and forth with you over my opinion on each of these artists.

I understand you guys wanting Stevie in before a bunch of these other ladies, but, well, she's in with FM. It'd be dope to have her in as a solo artist, but realistically... you want her to have 2 inductions before some others even get 1.

I think think Mellencamp's version of "rock" is incredibly generic. I understand your point about FarmAid or whatever else, and that's good.. but I'm talking musical merit here. And if you want to argue that he had one sublime album, that's fine too, but I think these nominations should take the entire body of work into account. And to my ears, they really just are not that good. And that's what I'm posting about.. "if i was in charge of the inductions". Especially when there are so many other artists who haven't made it in yet, as Steve MacD mentioned. It's a crime that those groups have been left off.

I wish they'd just go ahead and build onto the damn hall of fame museum to add new wings.. dance hall of fame, pop hall of fame, whatever else. Because some of this **** just isn't rock and roll.

The thing with Leonard Cohen.. he deserves it for truckin' as long as he is. But srsly, his voice drives me absolutely insane. It's like Dylan.. I love the way they put things together, but GD i wish they'd let somebody else do the vocal. That's not to take away from their merit.. it's just a personal preference issue.

it really does seem like all you need to do is have one memorable album and wait your 25 years and you are in.
it is more like a musical history project than a hall of fame -

i agree that it really should be on the body of work and kept to rock and roll or at least split up like you say sarah - a diff. wing for each genre.
