Thumbs up Genesis Concert

because chris and a few folks wanted to know how it was...

i was lucky enough to see genesis twice in the past week (they did a three night stint in philadelphia). i can tell you, the high level of energy and crowd interaction was really surprising and made me enjoy being there even more. though it's apparent the guys have aged, they (especially phil) did not slow down. phil would bounce from singing at the front of the stage to behind the stage (where he was filmed behind a blue screen to project images onto the really amazing set design) and then behind the drums. i was impressed.

the setlist was pretty amazing -- lots of old classics and favorites -- a really good combination. and even if you were a casual genesis fan who only knew a few of the hits from the 80's, i think you could still get into the show. apparently, it hasn't changed since they've been in europe...

- Behind the Lines
- Duke's End
- Turn it on Again
- No Son of Mine
- Land of Confusion
- In the Cage
- The Cinema Show
- Duke's Travels
- Afterglow
- Hold On My Heart
- Home by the Sea
- Second Home by the Sea
- Follow You Follow Me
- Firth of Fifth
- I Know What I Like
- Mama
- Ripples
- Throwing it all Away
- Domino
- Drum Duet
- Los Endos
- Tonight Tonight Tonight
- Invisible Touch
- I Can't Dance
- The Carpet Crawlers

standouts for me were home by the sea/second home by the sea, mama, ripples, and domino apart from the obvious radio hits.

if you're able to go see them, do it because although at their press conference before they left for tour the possibility of reuniting with gabriel seemed likely, phil collins pretty much said, thanks for three great nights. see you, philadelphia. we probably won't be back again ever.

The stage setup looks sick to death.

How close were you? Looks like you were right under his feet!

oh, it was. it was totally badass. the first night, i went and sat up in the 200 section and looked down onto everything and then for the last song, went downstairs and stood in the entrance way to the section next to the stage. the last show, i ended up sitting in the second row. not going to lie, i pulled out my cell phone and sent a text message to find the people i was working with and then looked up and phil collins was standing in front of me and staring right at me (and probably thinking wtf, you're texting during my show??)

Genesis is a band that I generally can't stand; however, ONE of their albums is among my favorites of all time: abacab. I can't believe they didn't play a single thing from it! Still, I have to admit that the setlist is otherwise pretty cool- the cheese factor, e.g., "I Can't Dance" is surprisingly low.

I can't believe they didn't play anything from Abacab! I'm glad you had a good time Marissa. LOLs at Phil Collins checking you when you were texting. Lucky girl, you got see them three nights. I think I would fall over dead if they said they were going to reunite with Peter Gabriel. The stage set up does look sick. Thank for the review, pictures and setlist.

they're cool for a birds eye view but apart from that, they're ****. that's the first time i've ever been up there and it will now be my last...i just feel like if i move the wrong way, i'm going to fall down several flights of stairs. not a fan. yes, i worked there two nights with a local radio station. i work in radio promotion.

apart from fleetwood mac and stevie nicks, as a child i was obsessed with phil collins for reasons that to this day, i'm unable to explain so to be able to see him WITH genesis was really awesome. i was really incredibly surprised by the setlist -- i really thought they would have done what fleetwood mac generally does -- play all of the hits and leave out the more obscure, etc. but i was pleased it was a nice mix

i felt like such a total jerk when i looked up and saw him standing smack dab in front of me. whoops. i saw two of the three shows (opening night and the final night -- in between, i went and saw the canadian indie band metric) and from what i hear, night number two was better than night number one. however, i loved night number three. and holy ****...if gabriel said he was going to give it a go once more, that would be insane.
