Default Has this hit the major networks?

http://www.plumasnews.com/news_story.edi?sid=5413#MP

here is an infrared picture:

and here are current stats:

I usually get my news from the internet, and I dont have cable, but I havent seen anything about this on the internet anywhere except locally. I think this fire ranks up there with other big fires, as in the southwest a few years back....

I dont know why 101 square miles of burned timberland hasnt made more news outlets. I remember when there was that big fire in the SouthWest, its all we heard about...but poor California gets treated like the step child....I think it stinks.

edit: after going to inciweb, I see our fire isnt as bad as what poor Idaho has to deal with

I guess it just seems so bad because our skies have been smoky for DAYS and its a constant presence, but myGAWD, its nothing like poor Idaho's fires......(pray for rain for Idaho )

I found a cool website that tracks wildfire incidents:

http://www.inciweb.org/

Apparently our fire isnt as big as others, particularly Idaho
they've got several fires burning, one of which is 246,526 acres, another is 101k+ acres, and the other is 80k+

Why hasnt THAT made the news? Thats HUGE!!!! It must feel like the entire STATE is on fire

2,000 evacuated as Calif. forest burns

1 hour, 4 minutes ago

Firefighters Sunday were battling two raging wildfires in Southern California that forced nearly 2,000 people to evacuate.

The larger blaze burned 15,433 acres of dense, dry bush in the San Bernardino National Forest and was 12 percent contained. Authorities initially said the charred 18,000 acres but infrared mapping overnight showed the fire was smaller.

About 340 residents were under mandatory orders to leave the Fawnskin area and another 1,200 voluntarily left their homes in the resort community of Green Valley Lake, Forest Service spokeswoman Carol Beckley said.

However, cooler temperatures were expected to aid firefighters Sunday and the fire was headed northwest away from the homes, Beckley said. The fire was at least at least 10 miles from the nearest desert community.

"Right now, it doesn't appear they're in much danger," she said. "The fire would have to travel quite a bit."

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency for San Bernardino County on Saturday, clearing the way for state government assistance with costs related to the fire.

The fire, which remained under investigation, burned several outbuildings at a campground. About 1,800 firefighters were aided by 12 fixed-wing aircraft, 27 hand crews and 15 bulldozers.

In eastern San Diego County, a wildfire erupted Saturday northeast of Julian, leading to the evacuation of about 400 people from the nearby subdivision of Whispering Pines.

The Angel Fire, which grew to 1,000 acres overnight, was 20 percent surrounded. One vacation home was destroyed and five outbuildings were damaged. Full containment was expected by Tuesday.

New evacuation orders were issued for ranches and campgrounds along a state road, but residents in southern Whispering Pines were allowed to return to their homes Saturday night.

(This version CORRECTS evacuation figures based on new information from fire officials.)

yes, I know 2000 people had to be evacuated, and that IS a shame. But I just dont see why huge timber fires arent more newsworthy.

one of my co-workers said he heard that the Moonlight fire was allowed to get so big so that next year's fire fighting budget would be larger. I dont know if thats true or not but if it is, thats HEINOUS.

I know Im the only one posting on this topic, but judging from the number of views, someone besides me must give a ****, so Im posting this latest update for the Moonlight fire:

Quote:
ncident: Moonlight
Released: 4 hrs. ago

The Moonlight Fire is now 100% contained at 65,000 acres. There was no forward progress of the fire overnight. The cost of fire control to date is $26,900,000.

Fire crews will continue to hold and mop-up 500 feet from control lines on all sides of the fire. Structure protection will continue in portions of the Diamond Mountain, North Arm, Indian Valley, and Wilcox Valley areas. Aerial based thermal heat detection is being used to direct firefighters to any hot spots.

Demobilization has begun and 1,853 firefighters still will remain this morning. A Type II team will take over the fire at 6 am on Tuesday, September 18.

A Burned Area Emergency Rehabilitation (BAER) team will begin assessing damage from the fire and will make recommendations for restoration and rehabilitation.

A mandatory evacuation order continues for Antelope Lake, Wilcox Valley and Taylor Lake. Residents are being allowed to return home in all other areas that were previously evacuated.

A Forest Closure Order remains in place to ensure safety in the vicinity of the fire. Road closures will continue for upper Genesee Valley at the junction of Genesee Valley Road and Flournoy Bridge (29N43), and at the junction of 28N01 (Janesville Grade) and 28N03 (Antelope Lake Road). To provide for firefighter safety, only residents will be allowed on the Diamond Mountain and North Arm Roads in Indian Valley. Please visit the Plumas or Lassen National Forest websites www.fs.fed.us/r5/plumas or www.fs.fed.us/r5/lassen for additional information on forest closures.

Indian Valley residents may see smoke in the morning for the next few days as smoke drifts down drainages and is kept low by an inversion. Smoke should clear by afternoon as light winds aid in dispersal. Residents in the Susanville and Janesville areas may see smoke for the next few days due to the southwest winds.

Summary

Current Situation
Total Personnel 572
Size 293,713 acres
Estimated Containment Date 09/30/2007 at hrs.

Management of the East Zone Complex is under the under the command of Paul Broyles' Type 1 Great Basin National Incident Management Team (IMT). Tomorrow morning, Alan Gelobter's National Incident Management Organization (NIMO) will take over command of the fire.

Fire activity was minimal yesterday due to overcast skies and higher relative humidity. Areas in the eastern and southeastern portions of the complex continue to be smoked in for most of the day. While this has hampered air operations, it has also reduced fire activity in these areas. The Profile Fire is still burning on both sides of Forest Road 340, and has reached the Middle Lake area, south of Crater Lake. Crews continue to make good progress in constructing fire line in the Ruby Meadows area, southeast of Burgdorf. Structure protection remains in place in the Warren, Secesh, Burgdorf, Fritser Ranch, Copenhaver Subdivision, Upper and Lower Badley Ranches, Big Creek, Edwardsburg, Crater Lake, and South Fork areas, including Hettinger Ranch, Trails End Subdivision, Elk Creek Ranch and Yellowjacket Ranch.

The Lick Creek Road (FR 48) is now open from 5 a.m. to 12 noon to residents and property owners of Yellow Pine and Johnson Creek, north of Wapiti Ranch only. This opening will continue every day at the above mentioned times as long as fire conditions allow. Access will be to Yellow Pine and lower Johnson Creek only and only via Lick Creek Road. No other roads in the area will be accessible, including the Big Creek Road (FR 340). For more detail information visit http://www.inciweb.org/ or call 208-634-1890.

Part of the Warren Wagon Road (FR 21) is now open to the public. The road block is at Burgdorf Junction which allows the public access to the Burgdorf area, including the Hot Springs, and areas north on Forest Road (FR) 246. Also open is the area east of the junction of FR 246 and FR 318 and north of FR 318 into the Kimberley Mine area and then north along the eastern boundary of Bureau of Land Management lands to the Salmon River. Access beyond Burgdorf Junction to the east on Warren Wagon Road will remain open to residents and property owners only. The public should be cautioned that this road opening could be rescinded at any time due to fire conditions. A detailed map of the reopened area is available at www.fs.fed.us/idahofires and www.inciweb.org.

Location 27 miles east of Cascade, Idaho
Incident Commander Mike Whalen
Current Situation
Total Personnel 924
Size 287,809 acres

Timber (litter and understory)
Fire Behavior

Thick smnoke and inversion limited fire behavior to smoldering, surface burning and group torching in Johnson Creek and Yellow Pine. Other areas without the inversion had increased fire activity.
Significant Events

Power is still shut off to Yellow Pine and Johnson Creek. Idaho Power assessed power lines and plan to return with a crew on Monday 9/17. Fire behavior was more active today. Temperature conditions are expected to lower for the next few days, and higher RH will contribute to decreased activity across the fire. Rolling rock and debris continue to pose problems on the Johnson Creek Road. Curtis Creek Group had some success with the fire on the north side of Big Creek/Warm Lake Road. Handline in Curtis Creek is completed. Spots south of this area were still active and growing today. Spots on Middle Fork Salmon River grew together and limited fire activity was observed today. Moderate fire activity was observed around residences on both sides of the Johnson Creek drainage.
Outlook
Planned Actions

Planned actions include point protection in the Johnson Creek, and Yellow Pine areas. Bucket work will continue to support suppression and containment activities as conditions allow. Actions will be to protect structures and monitor fire spread in Johnson Creek south of Yellow Pine. Warm Lake and Deadwood are in patrol status. Night shift is patrolling and holding fire line in the Johnson Creek and Yellow Pine area.
Projected Movement

12 hours: Some movement is expected overnight.

24 hours: Lower humidity and high tempertatures will increase fire activity in Curtis Creek/Trail Creek and Johnson Creek.

48 hours: Little temperature and RH change expected, should add to fire spread, except in Middle Fork Salmon River.

72 hours: Warming temps and lower RHs should provide limited to moderate fire growth. Areas north of Landmark between Middle Fork, Monumental and Riordon Lake may merge.

fire activity limiting fire spread.

48 hours: Little temp and RH change expected, should limit fire spread

72 hours: Warming temps and lower RH's should provite limited to moderate fire growth.
Growth Potential

High
Terrain Difficulty

High.
Containment Target

The current strategy is open ended, some containment objectives are being achieved and threats point protection targets are being reduced but full containment is not the current strategy. The current strategy will likely not change until a season slowing event is reached.
Remarks

Johnson Creek, Yellow Pine and Warm lake residences are now in a Level II evacuation. Power lines to Johnson Creek and Yellow Pine are still shut down due to fire spread. The Morehead Mt. Lookout has been wrapped. Ditch Creek Bridge was burned last night and is usafe to cross by vehicles. updated acres include: Monumental - 229,708. Acreage summaries are based on "administered forest" boundaries: Boise National Forest 204,682 Payette National Forest 34,055 Salmon-Challis National Forest 60,699 Private 272. Acre change due to IR flight on 9/14. IR request on 9/15 is in areas of Middle Fork and Yellow Pine.
