Favorite Jodie Foster Film?

Here's a pic I took of David just this last SXSW, fronting his band, Hellapeno. But I know what Bruce intended, a "young" David. Yes, the male Jodie Foster. He's still hot, but back in the day...whatEVER! He was drop dead gorgeous.

I was working at a college radio station back in the late 80's and some of the girls were talking about this hot guy who also sang in a band. They said he was tall, had long blond hair, gorgeous blue eyes, a killer body, the most gorgeous smile, on and on, right? I said,"There is no such man in this town" and my friend Ronni said, "OMG - there he is!" and sure as ****, he was walking outside the radio station. So, I bolted out the door and screamed at him, "Hey! Are you in a band?". LOL And he walked right up to me and said, "yeah, I am" and I told him that I would love to hear his band and maybe put them on my radio show. And the rest, as they say, was history.
He was (and still is) absolutely gorgeous. His band, Pariah, were awesome and I became very good friends with the entire band over the years. We had a lot of fun. David has a new band, Hellapeno, who I saw in Austin a couple months back. Livia took some awesome pics of them not too long ago.

I need to start coming around here more often I can't believe I missed this thread since I'm probably the most fanatic Jodie fan on here ..my fervor for her is the equal of any I had for La Nicks..I chose The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane because IMHO that was the first real Jodie Foster film where her persona that she has to this day first appeared and her performance in it is equal to any that have come since..And Ryan I can't agree that she is overrated ..She is not as versatile as Streep or Mirren but in certain roles as a lonely person overcoming adversity and becoming empowered she is without peer..she also has a mesmerizing star quaility that can make even questionable films like Flightplan watchable.She is probably the only living actress that in her best roles I can actually bond so much with her character that I attach to her and see the film through her eyes .I adore this woman and always will and I will be the first in line to see The Brave One when it opens on September the 14th.

My god, what a wonderful post. It's perfect, but I'd like to add - Streep or Mirren couldn't do what Jodie does. I, too, think she is mesmerizing. The sheer intelligence and charisma in her eyes. And though those other actresses are great at "losing themselves" in roles, Jodie succeeds in making the roles she does come alive not just in accuracy, but in sheer force of personality and depth. There is just always something extra and compelling there. I can't remember all of where, but I've read it before - I think at the time having to do with Bette Davis - the quality some people have where you can't look away from the screen, and are mesmerized. Though there be "better" or more realistic actors.
Quite simply, as Sheryl said about Stevie in her BTM - "She has the entire star package."

Oh, and I sooo wanted to pick LGWLDTL - but I've only seen it once, and fear part of the draw was...Martin Sheen...I kinda wanted to pick Foxes, too, because it amazed me when I first saw it - but I was on acid - but I don't think only Jodie amazed me about that movie, it was the whole movie itself - so I didn't pick those. but I do remember being astonished at her performance in LGWLDTL. She was a great actress, light years ahead of her age, even when she was small. That speaks to me of the intrinsic genius that really good actors have. Some people are born just knowing and understanding emotions, and being able to reflect them back, and she is one of those people.

Anyway, I think The Accused was her most raw performance - she really stepped outside, in a way, of her hard to cover up superbrain in that one. She was vulnerable, she was trashy, she was sexy, and wanton, she was fabulous, she was weak and strong, and weakly strong - and if I think about it, I think the character she played in that one was the farthest thing from how she is in real life. I'm sure she's vulnerable at times and whatnot, but not like this character. And actually, I suspect and have heard, that she runs her life well and efficiently, is very smart and in control, a cool person, etc. So, while I love Silence of the Lambs, I have to conclude that The Accused was much more of a stretch for her. The most stretched I've ever seen her, really.

Take "Death Wish" and retrofit it with a post-Sept. 11 sensitivity and you've got the essence of "The Brave One," a vigilante drama boasting a powerful Jodie Foster performance and carefully weighted direction by Neil Jordan.

Those considerable attributes go a long way in compensating for problematic plot mechanics that ultimately trip up the good intentions, especially in its portrayal of a New York that looks and behaves more like Charles Bronson's old stomping grounds than its modern-day incarnation.

While Mayor Bloomberg will unlikely be amused, the Joel Silver production, which is being screened as a special presentation at next month's Toronto International Film Festival, still should pack considerable appeal for fall moviegoers who prefer their hard-hitting vengeance served with a hefty side of introspection.

Foster turns in a compelling, emotionally raw performance as Erica Bain, the host of an NPR-type radio show titled "Street Walk," in which she shares the recorded sounds and her live thoughts surrounding life in the Big Apple.
One early evening, Erica and her fiance, David (Naveen Andrews), are walking their dog in the park when they're savagely attacked by a group of punks. David's wounds prove fatal, and though Erica ultimately recovers after a prolonged stay in the hospital, she's left emotionally devastated.

Paralyzed by grief and fear, she obtains a gun, ostensibly for protection, but -- and here's where things start getting harder to swallow -- Erica unwittingly stumbles across additional random acts of violence and becomes a pretty decent shot in the process.

By the time she tracks down her fiance's assailants, Erica has become a full-fledged avenging angel.

In the interim, she also has found a sympathetic ear in NYPD detective Sean Mercer (an effectively pensive Terrence Howard), a by-the-book type grappling with his own moral dilemmas whose investigations might be pointing him in Erica's direction sooner than he's willing to act.

Watching "Brave One," it's hard not to think about "Taxi Driver," and if, somehow, Foster's child prostitute could have picked up 30 years later where Travis Bickle left off.

But where the Martin Scorsese film had that complex Paul Schrader script, Jordan's picture has to make do with a more conventional genre piece written by the father-and-son team of Roderick Taylor and Bruce A. Taylor, and Cynthia Mort, who was brought in to provide a more convincing female voice.

As with some of his best films, such as "The Crying Game" and "Mona Lisa," Jordan is less concerned about genre technicalities than he is with the moral choices those situations bring out in the lead characters.

In that regard, "Brave One" keeps things intriguing, with Foster's haunted, fiercely committed performance certain to garner awards attention.

Howard, meanwhile, makes for a thoughtful opponent in this curiously low-key game of cat and mouse, while Mary Steenburgen provides the right balance of authority and concern as Foster's radio show producer.

Behind the scenes, cinematographer Philippe Rousselot, a frequent Jordan collaborator, visually shrouds Manhattan in a foreboding dread, especially during those earlier, unsettlingly lit sequences leading up to that first vicious attack; and composer Dario Marianelli provides the discordant themes that fittingly reflect Foster's ever-darkening psyche.

No, but that is fine. It was really about Bette. Although, of course, you may have said the same thing. But what I read and remembered was from highschool and shizz. When I was really into the Bette. Either way, it seems we agree on Jodie's "star-you-can't-look-away" quality. I mean, really, I love her. Just for being so exceptional, and so intelligent, and so unique in her exceptionality. There's so much non exceptionalness, and non intelligentness around.
