Default It's Official - Winehouse US tour canceled!

Amy Winehouse Cancels First Major U.S. Tour
Published: Tuesday - August 21, 2007

British songbird, Amy Winehouse, will not be heading on a U.S. tour as previously planned, announcing Tuesday (August 21), that it has been canceled.

The month long Stateside tour, slated to kick off in September, has been called off and at the moment, there is no plans for her to make up the dates any time soon -- at least this year.

"Due to the rigors involved in touring, Amy Winehouse has been advised to postpone her upcoming September U.S. and Canadian tour dates," publicist Tracey Miller said in a statement. "Plans are being made to reschedule her U.S. tour for early 2008. Until then, Amy has been ordered to rest and is working with medical professionals to address her health."

Miller said refunds will be available to ticket holders. Despite the cancel of the U.S. dates, the singer's European and U.K., set for October and November, are still a go, said the publicist.

Winehouse was slated to perform at this year's VMAs in Las Vegas on September 9 (she's up for three awards), which would continue into the launch of her first major North American four, but it's not clear if she plans to perform as planned at the VMAs.

The canceled tour comes days after the 23-year-old singer canceled all August dates, citing "health issues." A day later, she joined husband Blake Fielder-Civil for a stint in "retreat" -- the couple's euphemistic name for their rehab center of choice, the Causeway house on the Essex coast, according to E! Online.

In an interview with UK's BBC Radio, Fielder-Civil downplayed media reports about the extent of Winehouse's sobriety troubles.

"I think 99 percent of it's not true," he told BBC Radio. "I wouldn't believe it...There's a few problems there, but certainly not the magnitude [in reports].

"Everyone's just a bit tense, a bit worried about everything, but the main thing is me and Amy are getting better," he continued. "Don't worry. She's being looked after. She's going back to this retreat. She's determined to get well. It's not as bad as everyone thinks, but she's fine. She's loved and looked after."

The singer's condition became a media top story earlier this month when she was briefly hospitalized at University College London hospital after suffering what her publicist said was "severe exhaustion." Winehouse was ordered to rest by a doctor and canceled a handful of European festival gigs.

Her sophomore album, Back to Black, has been a huge success, selling more than 1 million copies in the U.S., as well as the U.K., fueled by the massive success of her single, "Rehab."

On a selfish level I am so bummed as her performance next month at ACL was one of the major reasons I am even going to the festival to begin with. However, I do want her to get the help that she obviously needs. I hope that she can get clean and come back with a vengeance! She's my favorite singer at the moment...I just adore her.

I'm glad she's getting help.

And you need to start getting into Butch Walker so you can enjoy his set at ACL. I'm happy I won't have to only catch the first 15 min. of Butch and bail on him for Amy. I wonder who they'll replace her with? Everyone seems to think it'll be Cold War Kids.

REALLY? I heard it would be LB and Stevie....

Getting Butch Walker tomorrow.
I will also be buying the new Rilo Killey and New Pornographers. Both, btw, arent playing at ACL this year.

I got a sassy SXSW flyer in the mail today. I am SOOOO much more excited about that than ACL. But I hate the heat...

i love how her addiction is being played down. christ, she almost od's a week ago and it's "not as bad as everyone thinks."

cold war kids are hot right now -- they translate very well from album to stage so if you get to see them, you'll enjoy. trust. please go see kaiser cheifs -- i also highly recommend peter bjorn & john and blonde redhead -- sucks they're both playing at the same time and for me, it's a tough call.

one year i will make it to acl or sxsw. but until then, i'll have to live vicariously through you both.

edit: midlake. go go go go. rodrigo y gabriela? go go go go. if you can swing both, dooo it. though i'm totally not a fan of mtv's recent rodrigo y gabriela fest during commercial breaks from the hills, they're AWESOME.

i hope you weren't rolling doobies down there. then, the impression that i've had of you for the last TEN YEARS (my GOD) would be tainted.

My ACL schedule so far - Thankfully, I have a few "I'd like to sees" before 2:30 PM on all the days, but really no "must sees." Otherwise, I'd probably pass out from heat exhaustion. My "must sees" are in bold:

Friday:

1:30 Heartless Bastards
2:00 The Wonderful Harmonizers
2:30 Pete Yorn - he's been doing PB&J's "Young Folks" lately, cuz everyone thought it was him. Yorn...Bjorn...
3:15 The Dynamites featuring Charles Walker
3:30 Blonde Redhead
4:30 Joss Stone
5:15 JJ Grey and Mofro
6:30 Queens of the Stone Age
7:30 Kaiser Chiefs
Maybe catch some LCD Soundsystem at the other end of the park while I'm waiting for...
8:30 Bjork

Saturday:

If it's not too hot and depending when I get up, I might make it down there in time for a wake & bake with Stephen Marley at 2:30. If not, I won't go down until

5:15 Butch Walker & the Let's Go Out Tonights
6:30 Probably hang w/ Bruce for the Arctic Monkeys, even though I've seen 'em before
Dinner...wander...
8:30 White Stripes!

Sunday

2:30 Grace Potter & the Nocturnals (missed 'em at SXSW, excited to see 'em at ACL)
4:30 Lucinda Williams
5:15 Midlake
6:00 Catch the last part of Regina Spektor's set
6:30 My Morning Jacket
7:30 The Decemberists
8:30 Bob Dylan

Rodrigo Y Gabriela are playing an official aftershow at Antone's, I think Sunday night? I think I'd rather see them there at the festival. I've been watching lots of clips of them on youtube lately. Their "Stairway to Heaven" is fab!

Rilo Kiley review - Mac references galore.

RILO KILEY. UNDER THE BLACKLIGHT (WARNER BROS.)

Rarely has a singer sounded as innocent as the front woman for the band called Rilo Kiley. Jenny Lewis' high, light voice floats around her band's music like a feather in tender wind. Yet the words she sings counter that character at every turn. Tales of opportunistic prostitutes, drooling sex predators and black widow women prowl through her songs - which all take place in the twisted canyons and moneyed boulevards of L.A.

Sound familiar? Apparently, the Eagles' Hotel California is open for business again, though Kiley's sound actually falls closer to prime Fleetwood Mac - a good thing.

The guitars of Blake Sennett have the slippery gait, and silvery hue, of Lindsey Buckingham's work on Mac albums like "Tango in the Night" and "Mirage." Sennett alights on Lewis' melodies, stitching them with subtle grace notes, gently buffed by producer Mike Elizondo. Along with the influence of L.A. folk-rock, there are also traces of the country noir of Bobbie Gentry and a snatch of rockabilly ("The Moneymaker").

Lewis and Sennett used to be a romantic couple (more shades of Lindsey and Stevie). They started the band with the rhythm section of Jason Boesel and Pierre de Reeder in 1998, and issued their first CD, "Take Offs and Landings," on the indie imprint Barsuk in 2001. Last year, Lewis stepped out for a solo debut, "Rabbit Fur Coat." "Under the Blacklight," the band's fourth CD, sees a power shift in their ranks. While Lewis used to co-write most of the material with Sennett, she now dominates the credits. Given the personal breakup, it's tempting to read lots of "Rumours"-style backstories into the songs, especially the opening track, "Silver Lining," in which the main character talks about how she "willed our love to die." Same goes for "Breakin' Up," as bitter and vengeful a split song as you could imagine.

Still, Lewis has too firm a hold on character to reduce the songs to autobiography. In "15" she tells the tale of a 25-year-old ex-drug addict who seduces a kid over the Internet. "She came to him/like a ticker on the news," she sings. In the prostitute tale "Close Call," Lewis writes, "her good looks could have sailed a ship/but her will alone could've sunk it."

There's the inevitable feel of finger-wagging behind songs as relentlessly unflattering to sex and coupling as these. But Lewis' sweet voice, and the ironically pretty tunes, leaven the effect. Ultimately, "Blacklight" treats its dire places and tawdry scenes with a sensitivity that makes them shine.
