I group sad music, angsting music & drinking music together.

Albums I always listen to when I'm sad -
Any and all Joy Division
Any and all Stooges albums - I like angry music when I'm sad
U2 - "Achtung Baby" (got me through more **** than I can even explain)
No Doubt - "Return Of Saturn" (the ultimate heartbreak record)
Fleetwood Mac - "Tusk"
X - "Los Angeles"
Lots of 10,000 Maniacs & Natalie Merchant
The Pretenders - "Loose Screw," "Pretenders II"
"The Velvet Underground & Nico", and of course, "Loaded"
Paul Collins' Beat - "Flying High"
Nico - "Chelsea Girl"
Janis Joplin - "Pearl"
Dusty Springfield - "Dusty In Memphis"
Lucinda Williams - "West," "Car Wheels On A Gravel Road"
Rilo Kiley - "More Adventurous"
Aretha Franklin - "I Never Loved A Man The Way That I Love You"
Otis Redding - "Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul"
Led Zeppelin - "Physical Graffitti"
Sonic Youth - "Daydream Nation"

Makes me feel better -
The Cynics - "Cynicism" (garage rock makes me feel better)
Gore Gore Girls - "Up All Night" (hard-partyin' chicks in gogo boots? YES)
The Paybacks - "Knock Loud," "Love, Not Reason"
Nikki Corvette - "Wild Record Party"
Blondie - Paralell Lines
Richard Hell & The Voidoids - "Blank Generation"
Anything by The Exploding Hearts, The Epoxies, The Avengers, blah blah blah

Songs -
Johnny Thunders, or Ronnie Spector - "You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory"
Dolly Parton - "Coat Of Many Colors," "Here You Come Again" (who HASN'T related to that song at one time or another?)
Loretta Lynn - "Coal Miner's Daughter" (great for drinkin' away yer troubles)
The Clash - "Train In Vain (Stand By Me)"
Elvis Costello - "Alison"
Janis Joplin - "Bye Bye Baby," "To Love Somebody," "Ball And Chain"
Loads of girl group tunes - Ronettes, The Crystals, Shangri-Las, Mary Wells, etc, etc

There's more, but this is all I can think of right now.

I feel that way about Joni Mitchell. When I am down, I always play some Joni. Somehow, her songs put my pieces together again.

I love the healing power of music.

Rufus Wainwright is good for sad.

Some of his best for "sad": Dinner at Eight, Harvester of Hearts, Want, Vicious World, Waiting for a Dream.

And now the pathetic part: I actually have a "sad" playlist...I haven't listened to it in a while, but it includes:

Elton John - Someone Saved My Life Tonight
Jason Mraz - Absolutely Zero
Jewel - Foolish Games
Lifehouse - Everything
Dolly Parton - The Grass is Blue

And a few others.

I'm in a bummed mood, so maybe I'll listen to it tonight.

I agree on "Hallelujah". Usually I pick John Cale's version.

"Marianne", Tori Amos.
"Not the Red Baron", Tori Amos.
"Storms" FM
"Playboy Mommy" Tori Amos (that one always makes me cry)

Now if I want to feel better:

"Sara" (of course) FM
"Rear view mirror" Pearl Jam
"Mr. Zebra" , Tori Amos
"One", U2

Yes yes yes! I was just listening to some Dolly on the way into work this morning.

Once again it seems..."

I guess we're promising a lot

I accept! Let's have happier songs at the wedding tho, k?

For sad songs, I also nominate the Chicks' Cold Day in July and Without You.
