Buckingham brings solo style to tour

By Steve Palisin
The Sun News

Lindsey Buckingham brings a "Big Love" to solo projects away from Fleetwood Mac.

The writer and singer of that 1987 single and other group hits such as "Go Your Own Way," 10 years earlier, will stop at House of Blues in Myrtle Beach on Tuesday to continue the direction he has taken musically.

For the longest time, Buckingham said by phone last week, "I have put a boundary around what I'm doing."

His fourth album, "Under the Skin," released in October by Warner Bros/WEA, marks his first solo effort in 14 years. Buckingham said the 11 cuts represent his commitment to make music on a more simple, personal scale.

Two guitars carry most of the numbers in a production that played out in his living room at home in Los Angeles.

"Playing quite a few songs of my own," he said, and touring for several months to promote the new album, "that's the psychology behind it."

He said tours for his other albums, with songs such as "Trouble" and "Go Insane," involved little time.

Buckingham, 58, said performers who have spent more than 20 years in the recording business might attempt to "re-create their external success," trying to find the right producer and set of circumstances, often resulting in disappointment.

He's taken another option, though: "Doing what you want to do, not expecting or wanting to play the game," he said.

Whether his product connects with a broad or a "boutique" audience, Buckingham finds either great, especially because with changes in the music industry and means of sales to consumers, "That's even more reason for not trying to go compete [against] 20-year-olds."

He finds performing "Big Love" and "Go Insane" on stage fun, especially acoustically on guitar, but enjoys "doing some new and older songs constructed in a more intimate way."

"You're putting the pieces of the puzzle together carefully," he said.

Buckingham has made his mark outside of a recording studio, as well.

His drum-driven title track from "Tusk," Fleetwood Mac's double album from 1979, was recorded with the University of Southern California's marching band. It remains a tradition at Trojan football games.

Buckingham called "Tusk" his favorite group album "not only for what it is, but for the reason it got made."

'"Tusk' was kind of the line I drew in the sand," he said of producing its concept. "It was the beginning of how I still define myself to this day."

He said it was his answer so the group would not make "Rumours II," on the heels of an album that sold more than 17 million copies and generated hits such as "Dreams" and "Don't Stop."

Buckingham also wrote and performed the opening and closing theme in the Chevy Chase movie "National Lampoon's Vacation."

He looks back at "Holiday Road" as a "foray into something" extracurricular.

"We got lucky with that," he said. "It was a fun, kind of quirky accidental moment."

He dismissed using the word "reunion" when it comes to Fleetwood Mac playing again, "since the band sort of reconvened in 1997" for "The Dance" live album.

His plans call for releasing another solo CD in the first quarter of 2008 then backing it up with more touring, but the group remains on his screen.

"Nothing's on the books yet," he said, "other than we're all going to do it sometime down the road."

Same old stuff, no need for a new thread. The only interesting thing is the bit about drums at the end.

Bill DeYoung: Fleetwood Mac's Buckingham plays Sunrise Sunday

March 8, 2007
As the guitarist and co-lead singer of Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey Buckingham's always understood the team player thing. From Day One, however, his rebellious streak was a mile wide.

Buckingham, who'll perform Sunday at the Sunrise Theatre in Fort Pierce, was the first to punch holes in the group's multiplatinum success by countering the finely honed pop music of the "Rumours" album with crude homemade recordings, via "Tusk."

He's quit Fleetwood Mac several times, only to come back, and he's just issued "Under the Skin," which was recorded at home and is almost completely solo, with just Buckingham's voice and guitar.

It's the first Lindsey Buckingham album in 14 years. "I think of myself," he laughed during a recent phone interview, "as sort of the Terrence Malick of rock."

(Malick, the director of such films as "The Thin Red Line" and "The New World," is notorious for taking long periods to finish a project.)

"A lot's happened to me since the last time I made a solo album," Buckingham, 57, said. "I've got three kids now, so there's a whole subtext of intimacy, and questions that have been answered after hanging out there for many, many years."

Buckingham said that during the last Fleetwood Mac tour, in 2004, he re-invented some of the old hits as solo pieces that featured his unique finger-picked guitar style.

"Having an impact that way got me thinking about how many albums I used to make where it sounded like a guy sitting in his living room playing the guitar," he recalled. "What if you were to start there and then add your production techniques and sensibilities?"

Ancient history: Buckingham and then-girlfriend Stevie Nicks joined Fleetwood Mac, a British blues band arguably on its last legs, in 1975. The injection of fresh creative energy had an immediate effect, with the "Fleetwood Mac" and "Rumours" albums (in 1975 and '77, respectively) topping the charts — the latter, to date, has sold more than 19 million copies in the U.S. alone.

Buckingham's "Go Your Own Way" and "Big Love" remain Fleetwood Mac signature songs; his sinewy guitar work is all over "Rhiannon," "Dreams," "Sara" and the rest of the Nicks-penned Mac classics.

Buckingham, more than the others, chafed at the initial bubble of gossip-driven celebrity that encased Fleetwood Mac (all the songs on "Rumours" were about the band members' on-again, off-again romantic entanglements, which the rock media loved).

"We got to this point with 'Rumours' where it detached itself from the music; the success became about the success," he said. "There was a danger of beginning to paint ourselves into a corner, if we had done exactly what was expected of us, which was to make a 'Rumours 2.' I'm not so sure anyone thought about how far we were going the other way."

The frustration was poured into Buckingham's contributions to 1980's "Tusk." He wrote and recorded nine songs at home, then brought them into the studio, insisting they not be overly embellished.

"For Mick (Fleetwood) and Stevie I think it was more of a threat, but for me hearing the Clash and all that kind of stuff that was coming over, was very inspiring to me," Buckingham explained.

"It reinforced what I felt, which was that I would always have rather been in a band like that than Fleetwood Mac, for certain reasons." Buckingham said he enjoys working alone, and the collaborative studio process, equally. "It's sort of apples and oranges," he laughed.

"You can bring a tune in to the band and go through a process, which is certainly more political; it's a more conscious process. I've always thought of it more as shooting a scene from a movie — you have to have that scene, or that song, completely written going in.

"When I work alone, it's more like having a canvas and painting. You don't feel obliged to have a fully fleshed-out idea, and you can start throwing stuff together.

"I guess it becomes a more subconscious thing, a more meditative process, and there are a lot more surprises. Times when maybe the work will take on more of its own personality and lead you places you wouldn't have expected to go."

Fleetwood Mac, he said, will come together again — minus pianist Christine McVie, who retired and moved back to her native England five years ago.

Buckingham said it'll be a year or more, anyway — he has another solo project in the hopper.

Will it be the polar opposite of "Under the Skin," a full-band project?

"It always has the potential of being that," Buckingham said. "Then again, I could mix the drums out, and it would be something else."

I thought it was interesting that he has an opening act for this show.

And sorry for repeating the post, but that makes me very much like Lindsey then. (I'd like to imagine that it's because I didn't pay attention to the other threads, but who knows.)

"Then again, I could mix the drums out...."

What's with his aversion to drums on solo projects? Did a drummer kill his parents?

But seriously, I think drums/drummers are the core of bands. And someone who tries to define himself-to use his own words- away from a bandsetting, the replacement of a drummer by a machine or leaving it out brings it more to a solo-feel.

Gift Of Screws, ironicly, was a solo-album with a drummer. But then again, the friggin' disc doesn't exist!

Just incase anyone is wondering why they are stuck at 99.94% on this torrent... (basically the last track and the text file didn't fully download). Mike is aware of the situation, but he's off to the knoxville show tonight and can't fix the problem until he returns... So be patient.

Yeah, wonderful! A great Shut Us Down and Turn it on! And IKINW has a little different arrangement with that nice tiny drumbreak at 3/4 into the song and, maybe it's more prominent because of the recording, but I think the backingvocalarrangement is more worked out. A definate improvement!
