I think this begins to enter the realm of Quantum Physics. Have you seen the new theories around black holes and the problems they are having resolving the dual existence of atoms? (I know you watch many documentaries and NOVA type stuff, so thought you might have caught the new physics one on Science Boundaries - the new Steven Hawking one) . This is basically where the mathematics have shown that as one enters the event horizon, the observer believes that a person entering a black hole is ripped to shreds, while the person going in is actually not effected at all. Also they are now showing that some forms of energy are actually LEAVING black holes rather than being sucked down into the singularity.

And is conscience a form of energy? or something else? Could the energy required for this also be used by the mind to create it's own afterlife as it converts away from the body? Making it's own transport?

As far as Heaven or Hell, there are archaeological findings that show a place called "hell" was an area in ancient times where they processed animal carcasses for leather and dyes. This was a smelly, hot awful place and may have played a part in the use of the name in scripture.
