The song you are talking about - TURN ON ME - reminds me a lot of the Psychedleic Furs, who I adore.
My fav today (it changes all the time) is AUSTRALIA -- I do a can-can dance in my living room everytime it's on! LOL

If I had Oprah's money, though, I would have a music box made with the RED RABBITS tune...it's just gorgeous!

(Can you tell I'm in love with this release?)

Anita has added a lot to the sound and yes, she was FAb on SNL and Letterman...wish they would take her on the road.

well... i heard... that viva voce will be touring with the shins for at least part of their tour.

i keep checking pollstar and their site... hoping for a little toronto date...

Um, I got a promo of 'West' this weekend and I've done nothing since but listen to it in dark rooms, baked. It's fantastic. I love Lucinda- I mean, I LOVE Lucinda- her albums have been the soundtrack to my life in a way that nothing else comes near. I can honestly say that I think this is the best thing she's ever done. The songs are phenomenal, the mood of the whole album is a beyond description kind of intense. I think there are two things she does best- the wry, bawdy jams (Joy, Righteously, Atonement, Changed the Locks) and those jagged, quiet ballads that are just so tender in their fragility that they break your heart (Something About What Happens When We Talk, Essence, Side of the Road- my absolute favorite) and this album has the best of those extremes. Learning How To Live is phenomenal, this quiet little statement about moving on, and then you have a song like Wrap My Head Around That, which is an AWESOME 9 minute (!) JAM.

It's just beautiful. It was an unexpected gift for it to fall in my lap so early, and I really hope everyone gets it as soon as they can.

I like the new Shins, but less than I'd hoped to- I was a big, big fan of those first two albums and I think part of me still dies a little bit when I think of the whole Garden State "they'll change your life" thing. That's my own baggage!

Sharon- I didn't realize there was a new Grant-Lee Phillips coming out so soon, thank you for the heads up!

I believe this year there is supposed to be a new Sam Phillips record, which will be phenomenal if it actually ever happens. At the very least she is recording and that is all I care about.

There are a few that are coming out soon that I'd recommend to anybody-

Arcade Fire- Neon Bible
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Modest Mouse (Johnny Marr!! Johnny Marr!! Johnny Marr!!)
Patty Griffin
Brandi Carlile- The Story

Patty Griffin
Stevie
Kelly Clarkson (yeah, that's right, kiss my ass)
An Wilson (now that I know about it)

Now that I'm hearing people mention Lucinda's, I'm getting excited. I'm a casual fan, I keep meaning to get more of her stuff.

It's still not too late to register! It's during spring break and it's a TOTAL blast. I would recommend it to anyone who truly loves music. The keynote speaker this year is Pete Townsend. Rickie Lee Jones and Emmylou Harris are both doing seminar/Q&A panels as well as performing. And there are rumors that Morrissey is returning -- he was fabulous last year.

Come to Texas!!

Rilo > everything else, iawtc.

Blake told me in November that the album would be coming out in like April or May, but that could mean summer, and there's no title yet. But it IS coming. No fear.

Currently making sweet love to Arcade Fire - Neon Bible, hot stuff.

Also waiting for DNTEL, Apostle of Hustle, Bright Eyes, and Neva Dinova (supposedly??), and Modest Mouse?

I am a big Nick Cave fan. Have you heard any of the tracks? I know there are a few floating around, and a little video as well. The one I heard was super gritty and raunchy, and their name suggests.

I have heard about 3 songs, and I liked them quite a bit. As I recall, I didn't think the songwriting was a strong as the Jenny Lewis material, but I love those blood harmonies! I will have to listen again. I didn't buy that album yet. I need to love a minimum of 3 songs to want to buy.
Now (thanks to your thread!) I am really excited about the *Brandi Carlile release—I didn't know about it. She has some awesome twins backing her up as well. Have you ever see her/them live? I watched a KCRW in-studio, and was transifixed by the twinly singing and playing.
*love her so much I talked my band into doing "What Can I Say", which is tons of fun to sing, even if I can't belt like she can.

that was my exact reaction, too. i don't mind the weaker songwriting because the harmonies are so fantastic.

They are dude twins. I think every solo artist needs a set of twins to back her up.
