It really shocked the stuffing out of me at first, but you know our anti-establishment Linds!
Heck, I think he was just saying that to be politically correct and prove a point. I could understand if he said he liked him, but instead he said he was doing something "really important." I guess that means that his existence as a disgusting artist who people want to censor makes him "really important" because he can help demonstrate that no one, no matter how gross, should be censored. I bet he'd say the same thing about Marilyn Manson or anyone who might be censored.

Mimi: You're right. I'm totally not into rap or hiphop, although a couple times I've heard a good song and bought the single. Never a full album, though. But I can still recognize there's a lot of talent there, just like I do for other genres I don't like as rule. However, I think Eminem is an embarrasment even to the rap/hiphop genre.

Notice a lot of "I think"s there! While I feel really strongly about Eminem's lameness, I guess it's all about where your interests lie. My sister despises FM, can you imagine?!

By the way, I'd like to add that my dislike of Eminem is not a criticism of those who like him, so I hope nobody takes it personally.

I hate Marylnd Manson so much it isn't even funny. but eminem is the ONLY rap/hip hop artist i like. he is a dirty Stevie, when it comes to writing. . i don't own any of his albums, but i love his singles. Without me was a super song. Cleaning out my closet was even better. And his old songs like Stan and whatever you say i am were very good too. but i'm sure the non-singles would be a bit too much for me but i think he's great.

Exclamation ITA!!

Exactly, a "dirty" Stevie, in that he can phrase stuff so well and his lyrics are so "unique"-sounding. I also believe he has geniune love for his daughter, Hallie. Just wish he and Kim could have worked it out. Oh well...

I think Eminem would cringe if he ever read these posts comparing him to Stevie. And I'm not sure that Stevie wouldn't cringe too!

exactly!
stop comparing eminem to stevie nicks!
this guy represents unreasonable hatered, violence, animosity and total lack of any musical talent whatsoever.
the way i look at it he represents everything stevie's music stands AGAINST.

Default I agree!

I think that Eminem has talent, or at least a knack for writing. I just wish he would "use his powers for good." I can't get behind someone who seems all about misogyny, homophobia and ignorance. I don't listen to a whole lot of hip-hop, but I have one of Ice-T's albums and although he raps about violence, most of it is empowering. I don't get a sense that Eminem wants to improve the world. I get that sense from Ice-T. OF course Eminem isn't required to be interested in improving the world, but I wish at least he wouldn't add to the rampant hatred in the world.

Sugar, I tend to agree with you, though I think there has been a fair amount of misunderstanding about Eminem's lyrics. While in one song he may seem to be bashing gay people, in another he's saying, hey you're gay and that's OK. Go figure. I think he takes on these different characters when he writes the songs. A lot of great songwriters have done that. Think Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash, Steve Earle and John Prine.

The unfortunate outcome of this, in Eminem's case, is a lot of kids who misinterpret the words end up acting up thinking they are being cool. I do wish Eminem would put his amazing wordsmithing talents to a more positive use. But then again, his music might not be as powerful.

Though they are vastly different, a pairing of Eminem and Stevie might actually be interesting. I suggested in another thread that she should work with him. I was jesting, but now I'm starting to think about it more seriously...

but see that's the thing, he and other artist like himself put out there what PEOPLE DON'T WANNA HEAR! ppl don't like to hear about all that bad things in the world. they want the n'syncs and backstreetboys sings about love, flowers, birds and ****. and that's just the truth. they don't want some kid coming out with an album and saying, "how f*cking dare you tell me what i can't and can say when your 11 yr old daughter is having sex!" and he's absolutley right! and this is y i like eminem and other artists like him. i applaud him and hope he keeps righting and making parents upset. UPSET that their kids are hearing some things that are actually very true. now the homophobia.......i'm not down for that cause i think it's silly. and i don't think he is homophobic at all! i think he doesn't like it, doesn't want to take part in it and that's totally his right and cool. i also think that when he calls someone the "f" word, he's saying that that person is a coward, a sissy, not disrespecting them by saying that that person is GAY! nor is he making fun of gay ppl! do you know what i'm trying to say? i call this guy on my job terry a "f" everydamnday!!! and i do it cause he works my last damn nerve! he's annoying, ugly and he is a punk ass coward! he kisses ass like you wouldn't believe and it's disgusting!!!

oh well that's my opinion on that.

He already did that Britney - Christina Uglyhaira thing, so who knows what kind of REAL icons he might be looking to go after.

Default We're getting way off topic, but

Ty,

I kinda resent you insinuating that all I want is some pollyanna world represented in art. It's one thing to put forth what is wrong with the world and it's another to buy into it, which is the point I was trying to make. I think the use of the "F" word (as you put it) is as irresponsible as using the "N" word. And I know people who will give me the EXACT same rationale for using the "N" word you just gave for using the "F" word. There's plenty of ways to say that a person is lazy, or stupid, or a coward or whatever. But when you CHOOSE to use a word that is so inexorably linked with the subjagation of a group of people, you're perpetuating the negative stereotype. And I think that's irresponsible, not just for rock stars, but for anyone. I have no problem with an artist expressing that life is crap and unfair and that there's a lot of crappy people in the world that would do the world a service by swallowing a bullet. Who doesn't know that? My issue is that his choice seems to be to perpetuate it rather than improve it. I mean, if your life was so crappy that you feel thae need to shout it to the world, WHY would you want to perpetuate that for the next kid? If Eminem got smacked around too much as a kid, why make it sound cool to smack people around? Stevie on the other hand (had to get her in afterall) not only chooses not to use words like that (publicly anyway) but always has some sense of hope in her songs. A sense of fighting through the bad and remaining intact, if tattered.

And why you think it's cool (not unfortunate or misunderstood) that he upsets parents is just beyond me. I mean, talk about shooting fish in a barrel.

Carne, I can only hope that his inconsistencies are attributable to some personal growth on his part.

And that's just MY opinion...
