I think that's a good idea. Years ago when I had a sick cat, I did the same thing. I asked my vet to eventually make the decision for me since I just couldn't.

Well, it's time.
Cash had a terrible night last night. He started crying, right before we went to bed. I gave him the only pain med I had(Metacam), and it didn't help at all. He cried and groaned, most of the night, and tried to throw up several times. We could try some stronger pain meds, but I feel that he's truly suffering now(he just started crying right now, too).
The vet's going to meet me at 4PM(in a half hour). I thought about waiting until tomorrow, but the crematory is open from 4-6 today, so I don't see any reason to make him go through another night.
My heart is breaking, for me and him.

Thanks to all you kind people who've helped me through the past 23 months with him. I truly appreciate it.

I am truly sorry Homer, I can surely understand your heart is breaking (I cried like beyond belief when Rufus died this past Spring)...And you have still have everyone here in your corner.

I think you are brave and kind to let him go, now that you see he is in pain.

We gave fluids to a 21-year old cat for a year, and I regret that we kept her alive, when (I now believe) she was in pain and needed to be let go.

I think you have done all a loving friend could do, and it is beautiful!

I really am sorry. My heart is breaking too. I know it's no consolation, but he won't be suffering. Now that you know this is the case, it's the best thing you could do for him. I'll be thinking of the two of you. ((((HUGS))))

So sorry to hear this, Homie. You've been a total hero to Cash. We all know it and I am sure he does too. I'll be thinking of both of you today.

Thanks to all. It's over now.
He walked in, wagging his tail for the vet and the tech(which still gave me doubts about doing it). They put a catheter in his leg, then gave me a few minutes alone with him. He looked scared, like maybe he knew what was happening. I just layed over him on the table, and told him how much I loved him. The vet came back in, and asked if I was ready. I was still laying over him. She put the syringe into the catheter. About 10 seconds later, he relaxed his head down to the table, and that was it. He was gone. It was really peaceful. I guess some animals have spasms, big gasps of breath, or lose control of their bodily functions. I am so thankful that none of that happened. They wrapped him in a small comforter, then put him in a box, and put him on my backseat.
I drove him to the crematory. I stood and talked to the lady there about him for at least 30 minutes about him. She wanted to know if I wanted a last look. I was afraid that maybe he'd lost control of himself, so I asked her to look first. Nothing had happened, so we looked at him for a few minutes, then I left. His ashes will be ready, tomorrow evening.
I sure miss my best friend.

I'm so sorry. But as Lisa said, now he's not suffering...and he had the amazing gift of you in his life....
