I don't know. I haven't used either. Philosophy seems to be really interesting. I do know their fragrances smell great. very clean and not overpowering.

Clinique is

Ojon has a hair restorative mask that really, really looked luxurious.

I haven't used Ojon, but the Philosophy stuff is good. I've mainly only used their bath/shower gels- the Amazing Grace is really nice, but I LOVE the Message in a Bottle one. They say they're bath/shower/shampoo, but I would never use them for a shampoo. But that's because I'm a hair product elitist.

As far as makeup goes, I have a friend who uses the present clear powder and loves it. I've tried their Kiss Me lip balm- a lot of people love it but I was not a fan. It was way too gummy and emollient.

yeah, I wondered that too. how can a concoction used to cleanse really be good for your hair?

I just try to use anything with "soap"-y qualities as little as humanly possible for my hair. I have really pretty long, thick hair and I just try to be careful about what I use in it. The more '-cone' ingredients in a shampoo means I am more likely to chuck it in the trash. Soap is just too harsh for your hair, even if it's a gentle/natural type soap.

This is my shampoo. I am beyond loyal to it.

That was a tangent, sorry

Ingredients: Sea Salt (Sodium Chloride), Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Fresh Lemon Infusion (Citrus limonum), Toothed Wrack Seaweed Infusion (Fucus serratus), Scottish Sea Water (Aqua), Cocamide DEA, Lauryl Betaine, Fresh Lime Juice (Citrus limetta), Coconut Oil (Cocos nucifera), Neroli Oil (Citrus amara), Mandarin Oil (Citrus nobilis), Vanilla Absolute (Vanilla planifolia), Orris Absolute (Iris florentina), Perfume, Methylparaben, Propylparaben,

"Both Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and its close relative Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) are commonly used in many soaps, shampoos, detergents, toothpastes and other products that we expect to "foam up". Both chemicals are very effective foaming agents, chemically known as surfactants.

SLS and SLES are esters of Sulphuric acid - SLS is also known as "Sulfuric acid monododecyl ester sodium salt", however there are over 150 different names by which it is known - see them here. In fact, SLES is commonly contaminated with dioxane, a known carcinogen.

Although SLES is somewhat less irritating than Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, it cannot be metabolised by the liver and its effects are therefore much longer-lasting.

A report published in the Journal of The American College of Toxicology in 1983 showed that concentrations as low as 0.5% could cause irritation and concentrations of 10-30% caused skin corrosion and severe irritation. National Institutes of Health "Household Products Directory" of chemical ingredients lists over 80 products that contain sodium lauryl sulfate. Some soaps have concentrations of up to 30%, which the ACT report called "highly irritating and dangerous".

Shampoos are among the most frequently reported products to the FDA. Reports include eye irritation, scalp irritation, tangled hair, swelling of the hands, face and arms and split and fuzzy hair. The main cause of these problems is sodium lauryl sulfate.

Click here to learn of the possible health effects of SLS/SLES

So why is a dangerous chemical like this used in our soaps and shampoos?

The answer is simple - it is cheap. The sodium lauryl sulfate found in our soaps is exactly the same as you would find in a car wash or even a garage, where it is used to degrease car engines.

In the same way as it dissolves the grease on car engines, sodium lauryl sulfate also dissolves the oils on your skin, which can cause a drying effect. It is also well documented that it denatures skin proteins, which causes not only irritation, but also allows environmental contaminants easier access to the lower, sensitive layers of the skin.

Perhaps most worryingly, SLS is also absorbed into the body from skin application. Once it has been absorbed, one of the main effects of sodium lauryl sulfate is to mimic the activity of the hormone Oestrogen. This has many health implications and may be responsible for a variety of health problems from PMS and Menopausal symptoms to dropping male fertility and increasing female cancers such as breast cancer, where oestrogen levels are known to be involved.

Products commonly found to contains Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or SLES

Soaps
Shampoos
Bubble-baths
Tooth paste
Washing-up liquid / dish soap
Laundry detergent
Childrens soaps / shampoos
Stain Remover
Carpet Cleaner
Fabric glue
Body wash
Shave cream
Mascara
Mouthwash
Skin cleanser
Moisture lotion / Moisturiser
Sun Cream

To find hair, personal and household products without ANY SLS or other harmful chemicals, please click this link - SLS-free products.

Do not believe that just because a product is labeled as "natural" it is free from SLS or SLES. Most common brands of "Natural" or "Herbal" shampoos and cleansers still use these harmful chemicals as their main active ingredient - check your labels!

The potential effects of SLS on health are discussed here and the NLM's data on the subject is available here."
http://www.natural-health-informatio...l-sulfate.html

"This inexpensive detergent is commonly used in cosmetic cleansers, hair shampoos, bath and shower gels, bubble baths, etc. - It is probably the most dangerous ingredient used in skin and hair-care products. In the cleaning industry SLS is used in garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers, car-wash soaps, etc. It is very corrosive and readily attacks greasy surfaces.

Sodium lauryl sulfate is used throughout the world for clinical testing as a primary skin irritant. Laboratories use it to irritate skin on test animals and humans so that they may then test healing agents to see how effective they are on the irritated skin.

A study at the University of Georgia Medical College, indicated that SLS penetrated into the eyes as well as brain, heart, liver, etc., and showed long-term retention in the tissues. The study also indicated that SLS penetrated young children's eyes and prevented them from developing properly and caused cataracts to develop In adults.

May cause hair loss by attacking the follicle. Classified as a drug in bubble baths because it eats away skin protection and causes rashes and infection to occur.

Is potentially harmful to skin and hair. Cleans by corrosion. Dries skin by stripping the protective lipids from the surface so it can't effectively regulate moisture.

Another extremely serious problem is the connection of SLS with nitrate contamination. SLS reacts with many types of ingredients used in skin products and forms nitrosomines (nitrates). Nitrates are potential cancer-causing carcinogenics.

Because of the alarming penetrating power of SLS, large amounts of these known carcinogens are absorbed through the skin into the body. A variation of SLS is SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE (Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate- SLES). It exhibits many of the same characteristics and is a higher-foaming variation of SLS."

Why do you use SLS in your products? Isn't this dangerous
The lauric acid part of SLS is derived from coconut oil (editors note: LOLLERCOASTER) but by the time it reaches our bottles it is so far removed from the original form we think it's more accurate to call it a synthetic - but if we chose to we could say it is derived from coconuts. SLS is derived from natural ingredients - once upon a time - but we give it a black colour code in the QIs because we think it's taking the mickey to call it natural. Some cosmetics companies make quite daft claims for cosmetics ingredients which may once have originated in a plant, calling them 'pure' and the like. We don't. The Costmetics Ingredient Review (CIR) expert panel says SLS is safe for use on the skin as long as you wash it off. There are many surfactants and only the amphoteric surfactants are allowed in cosmetics as they are the mildest. You're more likely to get an allergic reaction to an essential oil than you are to SLS; just because something is natural, it definitely does not mean it's safe. Cyanide is derived from almonds; it'll still kill you. SLS has been the subject of a mud-slinging campaign which was spread through the internet and alternative health outlets. It was very difficult to trace its source but it was finally tracked back to a manufacturer of a rival surfactant which shamelessly exploited people's good intentions to sell more of its stuff. Lush uses ingredients which are as safe as we can get, without resorting to animal tested products and sticking to as many natural ones as we can. There are many new surfactants but we don't think they have been adequately tested yet. SLS has been around for decades and although it's not perfect, neither is lemon juice. Some people are allergic to mangoes but somehow a campaign to ban the use of mango from Lush products doesn't have to the same ring to it. Loads of people are allergic to almonds and sesame seeds but we still use those. We wish it were a simple matter but it's not. Some people think it is, but it isn't. Honest. In the meantime we use it because we think it's so far proven to be the safest thing out there. Some of the newer alternatives may prove to be safer but we don't know that yet so we won't use them. Hayley,
can I just say a while back you recommended Queen Helene's Mint Julep Masque here on the board and I managed to find some here in the UK. That stuff has been a total godsend! Honestly the best I've used. So thank you for that!

I said there were alternate views. You are the one who said you are so picky about your hair, I thought I'd let you know. I posted more than one to post more than one, for evidence. I understand if you didn't want to read that much, but I thought I should post it anyway. I'm sure you are "good", but that doesn't mean I can't post in an open forum about a product someone mentioned. Or does it? I better go back and read the FAQ. Don't get mad at me because your awesome hair product has what many scientist/other agree is a poison toxic oil stripping ingredient. I was just trying to help. I didn't mean for my nasty information to ruin your day and make you mad.
BTW, I can't wait for your next lip balm opus.

It really is and cheap too! And I had never heard of it but now I'm completely devoted. I used to buy really expensive ones, so it just goes to show.

I just looked back over this thread and I think I'm definitely going to try the Revlon foundation you recommended because I get oily skin too. Do you still use it?

Yes...I LOVE it. Paula tried it, hated it, Pattie also was using it - but I don't know if she still is....

Of course we all have different skin types - but the Revlon one I've been using has been a God-send, blends well with my skin and I don't get oily...but I also don't stay all nasty dry...it's perfect (well for me anyway).

Cool. I'm definitely going to buy some then, it sounds just what I'm looking for, as the ones I've been using either make my skin greasy or way too dry.
Thanks for the tip Deanna
