Pop quiz: What's on your iPod?
Emmy Wade - 14 - Crestline
Friday, November 03, 2006
KATHY KEMP
News staff writer

Emmy, a ninth-grader at Alabama School of Fine Arts, co-starred in the school's recent production of "Wind in the Willows." She played Mole, a tunneling critter who gets tired of staying underground. "He gets up out of his hole and starts to explore," says Emmy, who would like to become a professional theater actress.

Her dream roles? "I'd like to be Viola in 'Twelfth Night.' And at some point in my life I'd like to play an evil villainess." Her hobbies include belly dancing, which she picked up for an earlier role in "Arabian Nights." She's been taking lessons for a year with Aziza.

Emmy has about 460 songs on her video iPod, which was a birthday gift last March. Her taste runs the gamut, though she's not big on today's pop and rock music.

PLAYLIST

1. "Planets of the Universe," Stevie Nicks - "I think it's the best song she's done," says Emmy, whose iPod is loaded with Nicks and her old band Fleetwood Mac. "Her style is really unusual and really interesting. She has that gravelly voice - not pretty, but powerful. Her lyrics are intriguing and beautiful, like poetry. And they're cryptic. You can't always tell what they're talking about."

2. "Layla," Eric Clapton - "I'm not really an Eric Clapton fan, but I love that song. It's a great classic, and great to dance to." A close family friend, Suzan Blackshear, introduced Emmy to both Nicks and Clapton.

3. "Habib Ya Albi," Ihad Tawfik - As a belly dancer, Emmy dances mostly to Arabic music. "This is like a wave-your-lighter kind of song, but really fast. Arabic singers have beautiful voices. They can slide from note to note really fast."

4. "Caislean Oir," Clannad - This quiet Irish Gaelic song, by the group that recorded "In a Lifetime" with Bono in 1985, is performed a capella. "It's a little bit like Gregorian chanting, except in Gaelic. And it's probably not about God." The song is on an album Emmy's Aunt Lynn Wade gave her for Christmas.

5. "The Engine Driver," The Decemberists - "It has a nice, smooth sound, and cool lyrics. All their songs have cool lyrics. Each one tells a story." Emmy first heard the band on National Public Radio. She bought their CD and was not disappointed."

I still find it amazing when young kids break that mold I tend to put them in because they listen to Rap or Britney-type singers talking about how hot they are and the utter crap those songs offer lyrically. Especially when it's Stevie they're listening to. Does my heart good.

Me too--I love hearing that younger folks enjoy her music as much as I did when Rhiannon first came out (tells you how old I am )

I hate to tell her but it doesn't matter how long she's an SN fan--she'll still never figure out what some of her lyrics mean and that's part of the fun of it!

Hey, I was younger than that when I was listening to Gypsy and Stand Back. Those were the first Stevie songs I was really into. But I never really fell into the mold of what other kids were listening to. In high school the kids were listening to En Vogue, Milli Vanilli and Samantha Fox. I usually went for more eclectic tastes like The B-52's, Blondie, The Psychedlic Furs and stuff like that. And I think by Rock A Little, Stevie had fallen out of the mainstream and become a bit of an eclectic act herself. I guess Tango was pretty big, though, wasn't it. Oh,and I love how the girl says in her article "her old band, Fleetwood Mac". How cute.
