Ya know, since J-Stew made the Harrison tune comparison, I just can't listen to it right now.
I have to somehow forget he did that.I'll listen to "Big Yellow Taxi" & "Show Us How" instead.

That comparison doesnot cut any wood! It's bull! Why take the Stew more serious than me when it comes to Lindsey? The guy basicly likes his safe stuff and you know it.

I don't think that at all qualifies me as someone who only likes Lindsey's "safe stuff." ![]() And I stand by my comment that the fast, fussy strumming on "Shut Us Down" sounds like the fast, fussy strumming in "Here Comes The Sun." ![]()

I thought the entire point of this thread was to bitch? No? Bitching is good, it helps control the frustrations.

There is some strumming on Shut Us Down -- it's a secondary track -- but none whatsoever on the Lindseys' version of George Harrison tune.

So somebody tell me what on Earth to call that rapid-fire plinka-plinka-plinka-plinka-plinka-plinka/plunka-plunka-plunka-plunka-plunka-plunka thing he does where he plays the same note six or seven times before moving onto the next note, which he also hits six or seven times. In some songs it works brilliantly, but sometimes it doesn't compliment the vocal melody at all and ends up sounding like the musical equivalent of rubbing your tummy and patting your head.

What are the more experimental songs of Lindsey's that you like then Brian?
I still find it crazy that people find Shut Us Down one of Lindsey's more extreme songs. It's the kind of thing I've prayed Lindsey would do for years: stripped down, intimate, less polished with real emotion. I really think he shouldn't be afraid to alienate a few people, you know, take the Neil Young route. You lose a few fans, but you may also pick up a few on the journey. It's better than playing it safe. It's not like his solo albums have ever sold in big numbers anyway, he can afford to take the risk. I think so, but Gerald may be the only one with me on that point.

Name it and I like it. I don't find "Shut Us Down" to be extreme or experimental. As I've said, my problem with it is that it sounds fussy to my ears. For something that should be intimate, the instrumentation and vocal melody are going in two completely different directions. I don't feel like I'm being drawn in, I feel like I'm being pushed away... thus, any real warmth or intimacy is lost.

The plinka-plinka is called finger-picking. Lindsey does a very fast variation on what is I think a kind of Travis picking style. What may seem disconcerting is the time signatures he uses on certain songs like Say Goodbye and the Harrison cover. I think Shut Us Down is a 4/4 beat, so nothing really that unusual from the pointview of time signatures.

As for SUD, I can't see how it's fussy myself, sounds pleasingly simple to me - for Lindsey anyhoo. Red Rover, now that's fussy!

I love "The Ledge"!
It and "That's All For Everyone" are my two favorite LB songs on 'Tusk.' Quote:
If it were simply an instrumental track, I'd love it. It has grown on me some since we all first heard it, and maybe once I hear it in the context of the album, my appreciation will grow.

I think "Shut Us Down" is "Red Rover" ideas taken the the extreme, morso than the comparison to *shudder* the New Year's Eve abomination that I will never again udder.

I actually liked it amongst the 'Gift of Screws' tracks but then disliked it within the running order of 'Say You Will.' Now I'm head over heels for it and I've cited it as an example of Lindsey's "new style" that actually works.
