There is of course, the other criterion for judging 'difficult to sing', which is 'night on impossible to remember'!

I'm told (again by Annie) that "Angel" and "Fireflies", both of which we're adding to our set, are a complete **** on that score. Both have a rambling, unfocussed (but very endearingly Stevie) structure... "Edge Of Seventeen" fits that category, too.

Oops. I forgot about that one. When my hormone levels are at their lowest point, I can sing that one all the way through.

I would say the hardest Stevie song to sing is...

"Talk to Me"

She didn't write it, so it's not tailor-made to her voice. She really had to concentrate on her singing on that one, and it is fukcing consistently HIGH!!
It is. I'll never forget when I saw Stevie back on the Timespace (or Whole Lotta Trouble) Tour at Red Rocks. Not only did she sing the bejesus out of Talk To Me but she nailed the "Well I can see that expression when the phone rings..." at at the end. She followed that moment up later in the show by singing a blistering rock version of Rhiannon including the "all the same" lines at the end full tilt. It was one of those rare Stevie moments where she just gets possesed (I don't know how to describe it better) and it blows your mind.

Amber - I've been working on this since you started this damn thread. it's taken a while, but I'm over it. lol. I did a little snippet, skipped the beginning part and got to the good stuff. the recording kinda sounds more shrill than I thought cause I still haven't mastered the "mastering" of Garageband. I've found a new respect for Stevie for pulling off this song. I've definitely done better work, but anyway, here's what I've got.

That was pretty good! You have a nice high range on the "ooo. oooo. oooo. ooo."
I thought it was interesting that you did better on some harder parts than on some "easier" parts. I have a little trouble in the midrange sections, too ("Where is the reason, don't blame it on me") is the parts I'm referring to. I mean, you sounded fine. But you did really, really good on the "Even in the darkest places of yo mind...Wheaaahhh the children, well are they, hopelessly enchanted...etc."
And that part has a lot of quick change range. It goes pretty high, I expected it wouldn't be nearly as good as it turned out. I was like "*cringe*, he's gonna be flat, he's not gonna do it!" And then you totally did it.
I have to say, though, this performance compared to your other ones confirms my belief that it is a hard song. It was good, but not as good as usual.

I'd also like to add that I never really thought of "Talk to Me" as hard to sing. I mean for me, not for Stevie. Not that I sound great...so maybe it is hard...but not really....

thanks deary. I did the best I could and then just got bored. the thing about it is, I record this either with the music really, really low or with headphones...either way, it's hard to hear where I am in the song or hear myself. the midrange part gets me every time on this song because it hits directly into a midrange part of my voice that gets really raspy. sometimes it works, sometimes not. I flower on parts that progress in range.

yep, this is likely the hardest song to sustain and sing well.

I think you're exactly right. you've got a great ear for that middle harmony. I hear you harmonize in really cool ways on both of these songs. I like Sleeping Angel a lot.

so much that I decided to do it myself. you want rasp? here 'tis. LOL

oh, and it cut off my last 2 "oh oh"s - damnit.

Really, a difficult song—you did a good job—it's a workout! You have managed some of the most idiosyncratic parts of the song pretty well.
Are you singing to a karaoke track, or with the Stevie recording in the backround?
I would like to hear the Gold Dust Project recordings again (did I get the name right?) are those still online somewhere?

it is a workout, for sure.

I have headphones on and just playing the song and singing.

the Gold Dust Project links are expired. I'll post the tracklist and you can tell me which ones you'd like to hear and I'll post them.

I think someone in this thread said Sleeping Angel is hard - I find this one "easy". That means, I still can't really sing it, but it is easier than others. I always sound better singing with someone. In that vein, here is my kickin' Sleeping Ayngel. I always said, I'd rather be a backup singer than a soloist. Mainly by necessity, but also for a love of harmonies.

And of course, the always awesome, always difficult, always...did I say best song ever? Cause, it is. My own very favorite, Angel. So difficult, so insouscant, so underrated...especially with the live dance hall girl dance. Lyrically underrated as well. This song is the sh*t. No one knows it, but this one is the actual sh*t. This song has some serious lyrics, a kick ass bassline, and a vocal to die for. And, if you see the live version, a super dance routine to beat all. BEAT ALL!!!!! Did you see those boots a charlestoning?! Crazy. Angel is the happiest, funnest, deepest song ever. It's hard to be deep and be happy and fun at the same time, but this song does it!!!! Here it is!!! Good bassline, awesome vocal, suprisingly brilliant lyrics - I could listen to it forevah! I think among fans it is kind of a weird Stevie song to have as a favorite, but is sure is a frontrunner favorite of mine. It doesn't hurt that John is busting out a kick ass bassline. Not one bit. I love fast, kicky, bassful songs with great vocals.

I think my passion comes through, here.

I can hear you on Angel much better than on the Sleeping Angel track—it sounds really good. Angel is just the most bouncy, joyous rock song ever!

That would be cool, thanks!
Now, I want to know about the vibrato I hear in your Wild Heart cover. You are able to imitate her vibrato very well, did your voie have that quality before, or did you consciously/unconsciously develop it while singing along with Stevie? I ask, because when try to sing like Stevie, I end up hoarse after a few days, you know, like she did.
Anyway, great strong voice! And now I will go listen to your Sleeping Angel.

my vibrato has always been there. I think it's one of the reasons I love singing Stevie so much. our voices are very similar (I like to think).

if anyone's interested this is me singing Get Mine, Get Yours by Christina Aguilera. I did the lead track and all 3 backing vocals over the track.

I just listened to Sleeping Angel. Beautiful. I was thinking your vibrato sounded natural, then you just said it was. Yay for me.
Isn't that song a pleasure to sing? You can just wail it. It does suck it cut off your ending "oooohhhh"s.

I think I'll listen to you Christina thing now, so I can see how the layers and stuff sound.

Hey, Jaz, the Christina song sounds really good. I don't know that song, so maybe I'm not a great judge, but still.

thanks.

there is one part towards the end I wish I could re-do, but I had already locked that layer and didn't want to do it ALL over again. so, it is what it is.
