Default our mayor has lost his mind...

this is from today's news and it's just another in a string of crazy antics our mayor has shown. he's gone into nightclubs (our only gay one to be specific) with armed guards and flashing lights in the cars in the parking lot, he walks around with a gun and a badge and just last week he had a house burned down because he had "information" it was a drug house, but see, here's the catch, he did this without even discussing it with the actual owner of the house. yeah. he's psycho. anyway...
_____________________________________________________________

Jackson Mayor Frank Melton posed as a police officer when he visited Capitol Hill in July, according to a report, prompting the U.S. Capitol Police to revisit its policy for identifying visiting law enforcement officers.

Melton was "presumed to be armed" during a July 26 visit to the U.S. Capitol, according to the report obtained by The Clarion-Ledger. Melton was issued a security badge reserved for armed and on-duty law enforcement, though he said after the trip that he never asked for the badge and did not present any identification suggesting he was a police officer.

The badge, issued by Capitol Police, allows a law enforcement officer to go through security checkpoints without being searched. Melton, known for carrying guns, is not a law enforcement officer.

Though no Capitol official has alleged the mayor violated any law, "I'm satisfied that if (Melton) comes again, he could not game the system," 2nd District U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson said Wednesday.

"There is too much at stake for him to pretend to be law enforcement when he is not," said Thompson, the ranking Democrat on the Homeland Security Committee.

Thompson's office asked for an investigation into the mayor's security clearance after one of his staffers noticed Melton's badge during the meeting. Melton was in Washington discussing a $29 million federal appropriation request to repair Jackson's crumbling water and sewer systems.

Wilson Livingood, sergeant-at-arms for the U.S. House, said in the report to Thompson dated Aug. 17 that Melton showed a Jackson Police Department credential to Capitol Police.

Melton did not return telephone calls seeking comment for this story, but when asked about the incident shortly after he returned from Washington, he said he did not go armed and was offered the badge by Capitol Police when his two bodyguards - both Jackson police detectives - were given credentials.

City spokesman Tyrone Lewis also disputed Livingood's account.

"We've already addressed that issue," he said. Lewis said Livingood "hasn't substantiated where he got that information."

Marcus Ward, who at the time was the lobbyist for the city and accompanied the mayor on the Washington trip, said he did not see Melton present any police identification and that he did not claim to be a police officer.

As far as himself, Ward said he did not receive a badge and went "through all of the security screening like any visitor."

In the report, Wilson stated Capitol Police called the Jackson Police Department and confirmed the identity and "duty status" of Melton and his bodyguards before issuing the badges. Livingood also said Melton's bodyguards "vouched for the mayor."

Lewis said he is not aware of anyone from Capitol Police calling to verify Melton's credentials. Lewis said such a call likely would be directed to him.

In keeping with Capitol policy, neither Melton nor his bodyguards were asked to present their guns for inspection, "so it is not known that the mayor was unarmed," Livingood wrote.

Livingood informed Thompson that he since has been instructed by the chief of the Capitol Police to develop new policies, including requiring police to display their guns before receiving a law enforcement pass, show their law enforcement badge and credentials at every security checkpoint, and return their temporary security badges when they leave the Capitol.

"As a matter of record, I also directed the Chief of the United States Capitol Police to personally contact Mayor Melton and the two members of his security detail to notify them of the proper use of temporary (law enforcement) credentials," Livingood wrote.

Although the mayor has said at times that he possesses authentic law enforcement credentials, no proof has ever been shown. When asked whether the city considers Melton to be a police officer, Lewis said, "He would have to address that."

After returning from Washington, Melton responded to comments from Thompson staffers that his visit made them "uneasy," accusing Thompson of trying to "set me up" by having the Transportation Security Administration search him for a weapon at Reagan National Airport.

Although aware of the concerns raised by Thompson, Jenny Manley, spokeswoman for U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., said there were no problems with Melton's visit to their offices on the same day. "Senator Cochran and Mayor Melton had a nice, long meeting," she said. "I don't think that Senator Cochran fears for his safety when Mayor Melton is around."

Likewise, Lee Youngblood, spokesman for U.S. Sen. Trent Lott, a Republican from Mississippi, said Lott and Melton had a pleasant and uneventful meeting about water and sewer projects.

"Mayor Melton's requests are all good requests," he said. "Senator Lott is going to support those requests wholeheartedly."

But Lanier Avant, Thompson's chief of staff, said many people remain concerned about the mayor's behavior.

"Once you look at that pattern (of behavior), a lot of people become very alarmed as to what people see as a callous disregard for the law," he said.

Melton recently was accused of instructing a group of men to damage a home in Jackson's Virden Addition neighborhood. And a local nightclub manager alleges he was handcuffed and beaten by part of Melton's entourage in a separate incident.

It also is not the first time Melton has forced federal officials to review their policies regarding potentially armed visitors.

In January, TSA officials warned Melton and local TSA officials that the mayor no longer could carry his guns aboard commercial flights. Melton said he carries guns because of threats on his life.

TSA officials said Melton posed as a police officer, showing a badge and a letter signed by Jackson Police Chief Shirlene Anderson so he could fly armed.

TSA has refused a Freedom of Information Act records request by The Clarion-Ledger for hundreds of pages of documents detailing how Melton flew armed through airports throughout the country. The refusal was based on the grounds that release of those documents could jeopardize current or future investigations. The Clarion-Ledger has appealed that decision.

This guy sounds like a loon. I'm pretty sure that burning down that house was illegal. Were there any repercussions from that for him?

I have to wonder if his behavior is protected under the new terrorism laws. This thought would go along with my previous post in another thread about our disintigrating rights and freedoms as US citizens. There's a Beatles song running through my head right now... followe by a few other choice songs from the 60s. Gad, I better watch out, after all... the 3 Js and so many others are no longer "with us" because of their outspokeness.
