People who wiz on a public toilet seat and don't wipe up.
People who drip water on a public restroom counter and don't wipe up.

Well, I agree with you about parents ignoring their wild-running children in stores, and I was neve alowed to run around in stores or restaurants, or even to speak around adults, unless spoken to. But, supposedly I just had a compliant temperment.
I have a little something to say about that candy, though. First off, I don't give my son candy bars, and we don't eat them either, but he has tried to grab a pack of candy form the bottom display, and then cried when I told him "no." I needed to pay for my purchases, so we all had to suffer another 30 seconds of horrible whining and crying. If a child wants a candy bar, and gets so upset that they scream, then a spanking isn't going to stop it, unless you knock them unconscious. A child's brain chemistry doesn't accomodate impulse control, or delayed gratification, that supposedly happens with mature brains. If the parent can, they should take the kid outside, but you know, sometimes parents have to eat too, and they might have to keep shopping. Now, if you want to complain, please walk right up to the MGR, and tell them to STOP PUTTING CANDY DISPLAYS AT TODDLER HEIGHT! They are on the bottom shelves for one reason only, and that is to tempt little children, and it just plain SUCKS!

Call marketing candy to children a pet peeve of mine.

Once, in once of my restaurants, I had a table where the mother was letting her child climb on the outside of a spiral staircase. Our floor was tile. I came running over, concerned for his safety and told her that he was absolutely not allowed to be climbing on the staircase. She shrugged, and said, "what should I say to him?" I might have replied that "no" would be a good start, or I just thought it, I can't remember, but I had to quit that job soon after, so I might have told her off. Unbelievable!

Ok, I must be really grumpy (back pain) because I keep thinking of more pet peeves. This one is big.
People who park huge SUVs and trucks in compact spots. I am tired of being trapped in my car by them, and I am tired of all of the dings on my car from them. If you want to park in a compact spot, then get rid of your big-ass car, and buy a compact one! Oh yeah, and hang up your little cell phone before you try to park, too!

Grrr Stuff like that makes me SO mad - these kids are going to grow up thinking the world belongs to them - and will not care a fig about authority and rules of society - or how their actions affect others. How annoying.

When I worked at a Michael's Arts and Crafts store our manager thrived on yelling at and scaring children - she didn't care if their parents were offended. She yelled at/made cry many a running child

Yeah, someone has to do it. Of course, it was the mom I really wanted to yell at, and mostly because she didn't car that her kid could get seriously injured, it was byond my thinking that he was misbehaving.

Amen. Worse yet - people who purposely take two parking spots by either parking crooked or parking on the line...pisses me off!

yeah - it's usually the parent who infuriate me - because I realize the kid just doesn't know any better - of course that kid will then grow into an adult who infuriates me

My mom got married a couple of years ago - and in the process I got a niece. Well I got her a few fun back to school things, my mom bought her more - I asked her how she liked them and my mom annoyed said, "ugh - she didn't even say thank you..." BUT I wasn't mad at the kid - more her loser parents who never taught her to have manners - or to say thank you - it's quite sad really.

Thumbs up

other people's kids misbehaving in public is so damned frustrating. maybe it's more frustrating because i teach and deal with kids all day?

i was at Michael's yesterday (funny you mentioned that, D) and two twelvish girls were testing the spray paints by spraying the edges of the shelves. the entire aisle was stinky and they were causing damage to the store! two other customers walked past and shot them dirty looks. i can't settle for that. i turned on my Ms. D voice immediately.

"exCUSE me, ladies, i'm fairly certain that what you are doing isn't allowed..." (puzzled/embarrassed looks)

"i suggest you stop what you are doing and find something to clean that mess up with before you leave this store..." (embarrassed/guilty looks)

"and i think you should think things through more thoroughly before intentionally vandalizing property."

they stopped and wiped some of it off. then they probably keyed some cars and smoked up in the parking lot. but those shelves are safe!

Good for you for saying something!!

We caught so many kids trying to steal spraypaint/painting our shelves/stealing the paint pens...annoying.

The other day I was at Target and two 13 or 14 year old boys were looking at DVDs...or rather knocking them off shelves and kicking them...I still regret not saying anything - instead I shot them a look of death and went on my merry way.

>People who don't signal when they change lanes.

>People who don't promptly respond to e-mails. This is actually one that's really pissing me off at the moment. I can understand being a little busy, but if I send an e-mail and two weeks go by without me getting a response...I think that's just unacceptable, unless you're out of town. And even then they have those auto-reply things you can utilize to let people know you're gone. There's a person I e-mailed a couple of weeks ago and he hasn't replied. I sent him a second e-mail, forwarding the first, this weekend. Still no response. I almost want to just start inundating him with them now.

Back in the day, I was told once that I couldn't have it, and if I kept up I was brought out to the car where my ass was thoroughly whooped. I'm not saying that is the best way all of the time (although sometimes it is deserved with the mouths on these kids today) but I think that once kids know they can get the upper hand, it's over. My sister is a good example. She would push and push until finally my Dad would give in just to shut her up. Now she's nothing short of high maintenence, and will still do the big song and dance until she gets her way...at age 26.

So I agree with you to a point. Sure, the candy shouldn't be so accessible, but since young kids aren't spending the money, it ultimately falls onto the parents to put their foot down and not back down from the dreaded "no."

I want to make sure you know that you have a right to your pet peeve—not trying to devalue the peeve.
Yes, not backing down is key, and I certainly wasn't suggesting that accessibility to candy means a parent has to give in (I never have yet, but I have had to leave many a drugstore or grocery in mid purchase) I just meant that stores know the kids will see and grab that candy, and they are hoping a parent will be embarrassed, and just buy it. Maybe we should be sure we are talking about the same age of child, because any parent "whooping" a 2 or 3 year old for crying over not getting candy would likely have their child taken away by CPS. Kids just periodically fall apart, whether because they are tired or hungry or hurting, and smart responsible parents will try to avoid shopping at high risk times, but sometimes that can't be avoided.
I really dislike elderly, and even find myself getting annoyed at handicapped people (gasp) but as I have gotten older, and have started to see how feeling physically crummy can make your personality crummy, I am trying to be a little more compassionate. Unless you are parking your SUV in a compact spot, and then I might have to pee on your car
