Michelle I am so sorry to read about your weekend... its so sad when you try and save a life and you cant... about a year ago I was woken at 4 in the morning by my dog and cat having a kerfuffel in the hallway, my dog came up to the side of my bed and sniffed me... I turned the lamp on and looked down and he had a little baby bird in him mouth... he placed it gently on his bed and was looking up at me as if to say "well what are you going to do?" (I think he had taken it off my cat... who is a little ferral.. we adopted him from a friend who found him as a kitten) anyway I tried hard to save the little bird and he survived the night and the next day but died the following night in my hands whilst I was feeding him... I was devastated, cried my heart out... we have a spare birdcage and my man calls it the cage of death as only one bird out of about 5 i have tried to save has ever survived to be released back into the wild...Its so hard, but you cant not try!!! The fact that you tried to save the little squirrel is a credit to you as a human being... alot of people wouldnt even bother...

On the subject of Cash, I am so glad that he has had some improvement... he is in my thoughts often... and I think it was beautiful of you Homermcvie to sit with that lady in her time of grief...

Oh and Michelle, your friends baby is beautiful... hope your week gets better!!!

Wow, you are an animal good samaritan! it is great that you are looking out for the animals. I am so sorry that the little squirrel didn't make it, but it sounds like you have had some successes too.

I had a young possum get injured by a large possum in my driveway the other night, and I had quite a dilemma. I heard the fight at aobut 3 in the morning, and I found the big possum pinning the other one in his teeth. I scared him off, and the little one played, you know, possum. I went inside to try to find someting to put him in, and the big one came back, and attacked again. I chased him off, and then felt like I had to stand guard. The little one was tired, and his head kept sinking, and I felt like standing near him was probably as stressful to him as the threat of the big possum. It was so heartbreaking, and I have encountered injured possums before, and the have super nasty teeth, and will really attack, so I was scared to pick him up. I called the humane society, but they wouldn't do anything, and told me to put a box over him, if I wanted to keep him warm. I considered trying to get him to a vet, but I just didn't know how I would do it.
I realized that if they had simply fought in the field next door, or down by the river, away from our houses, nobody would know, and I am sure there are territorial skirmishes between possums all the time, so it would likely happen again. I felt really helpless. I finally went to bed, and the next morning, he had left the box. At least I didn't see any more blood, so maybe he made it.

Thanks to ALL for the good thoughts on Cash. I really appreciate it.
I feel VERY lucky, to have the gift of more time with him. He's my Bubba!

I have huge respect for people who go miles out of their way to do right by animals I always do my best as well, but often this extends to spiders, moths, flies etc as well, then people just think I'm not right in the head The other morning I heard a fly buzzing somewhere and I couldn't tell where, till I found it stuck inside a glass I'd been drinking out of the night before. He'd got his wings stuck to some sticky stuff and couldn't get out. I fished him out and put him by the window but he couldn't fly 'cos his wings were stuck together. So I poured a little pool of water next to him, and he dipped his feet in it, washed his wings, sat there for a bit and flew off! Made my day

Also, a while back I was stuck in a line of cars, and I got out to look up the road to see what was going on, and I saw a truck parked across the road. I figured it was stuck or something so I went to check it out, and it turned out the driver had deliberately parked his truck across the road because there was an injured rabbit right in the path of the traffic, and this great ape of a guy had stopped all the cars so he could get out and help it... Sensitive souls come in all shapes and sizes!

ragandbone-oh! I hope the little opposum made it. That is so sad. It is definately hard when you are so helpless and don't know what to do .
Somedays I want to take a part-time job at a vet or something just so I have the skill to save all these animals I pick up. Or at least have the good sense to leave a rabid dog alone.
sammigold-I have tried to save birds also. They almost never make it for some reason. I seriously think they are the hardest ones to save

bretonbanquet-oh, I don't discriminate either. Well, except snakes. But spiders don't bother me. I"ve acutally pulled over on the shoulder of a highway because a grasshopper was on my windshield and couldnt get off because I was going so fast. did I mention I'm also crazy?? and that rabbit story was so touching. Sounds SO like something I would do-except I don't have a semi to stop traffic. But I WOULD!! ha ha

Well that makes me crazy too I have also stopped to rescue wind-blown insects from my windscreen - I'm just pleased to know I'm not the only one!

And what's wrong with snakes? They're lovely too... snakes can be your friends, you know
