OK How about those of us born before 1958?? I am older than dirt-
Not only did we have to walk to school, walk to the library, walk to work (when I was 16..), walk to your friend's house, walk to get your bike, horse, whatever...lots of walking in those days

Brian is right about the TV's...I even remberber the UHF channels (or whatever they were called.) Regular TV had 12 channels and then the UHF had I don't know how many? But you had to switch the TV over to the Rabbit Ears on top to get the UHF- around here one station we got was 38 out of Boston. I remember the test pattern on TV after midnight! and I remember watching "Dialing for Dollars" -the show Janis Joplin mentions in "Mercedes Benz".... And lastly it was a very big deal when we got a COLOR console

No calculators in class-No portable/off the wall phones at all, closest thing was the walkie talkie's the Cops used. No touch tone, everything was dial...
Gas was cheap, butts were cheap, girls were not! People were kinder and more accepting of all types of different people..as long as they were white and from New Hampshire, (damn yankees)--but that was Iall I ever met for new people- small small town.

And last but not least...when you were a little kid- Man that was the life!!
We used to go outside to play every day! Who cared if it was raining/snowing? Not us, Summers were were always out and school year too, School schedule:
Get up- put on school clothes-go to school- come home (after walking up hill...) put on play clothes- Now it's 3:30 and you are yelling, as you run out the back door, "MOM, call me for supper!". (Mom's were home, they didn't work back then...and they always dressed up, Not Ozzie and Harriet dressed up, but they never wore sweats and sneaks)..But I digress...And out we would go, in the neighborhood , or fields, to play with all your friends, even the weird ones cuz hey they lived near you and you were all kids.
We played kick ball, hop scooth, jump rope, kick the can, baseball, whiffleball, war, red light, simon says, and all sorts of "made-up" games.
Then around 5;00 -5:30 MOM'S would l be yelling SUPPER!!!!!, and everyone would scatter to go home to eat...and then beg to go back outside until it got dark!!!
It was innocent and it was fun and it was a different era, but honestly a great way to grow up, (IMO)

I feel badly for children today that get up, throw on jeans and a tee- shirt- Go to the bus stop (at the end of their driveway), go to school, get out of school and ride the bus to a day care center until their Mom or Dad can pick them up. Go home have a microwaved dinner (We didn't have those either), or a fast-food dinner (again Mc Donald's opened in my town when I was around 15!, so didn't have one of those...We did have a A&W Rootbeer place...anyone remember those?) and after dinner, play games online or watch TV, until they go to bed... That really can't be fun....and they don't even know who lives down the road because they are not allowed to leave the yard...too many whacko's out there. It's really sad.

Go out and play kick the can, get some sun, breathe some fresh air and LAUGH, giggle, smile., be a child-It goes by way,way too fast C'mon everyone, let's go play.

Now- that...was a rant
