I'd say it's an ironic song. Paris Hilton singing that's white trash.

Well, I consider myself sort of an expert in this department...why? Because I am from a small town in rural Georgia that is composed of 3 classes of people: your true rednecks (they have no idea they are actually that bad, and don't care at all!), the ones who are aware that they are rednecks and are bettering themselves, and the ones who have risen above and beyond that status.

When you look the term up in the dictionary or online, it is defined as: a poor white person in the southern United States or in modern usage, redneck predominantly refers to a particular stereotype of whites from the Southern United States. The word can be used either as a pejorative or as a matter of pride, depending on context.

The term redneck originated from the farming community usage of the term farmer's tan, which of course is when your neck is red and your arms or whatever skin is exposed to the sun from the long, hard days of working in the sun. All the men in my family have this farmer's tan, but I don't consider them ALL rednecks as such...because they don't farm for a living and most of them don't have the idiosyncracies and characteristics of the term. I do find some things endearing about my true redneck cousins, but some of them are just plain gross and uncultured...and that is not just me being a snob.

What country music (I love country music, and have met most of these musicians, so I'm not hating here!) has done to glamorize and capitalize on some of these behaviors and mannerisms that I grew up witnessing in my own backyard that probably should not be revered is really interesting to me. I know it is probably funny for some of ya'll (yes, I know my roots! I say such things!) to poke fun at the "backwoods backwards" ways...but it is a way of life for many. I still have a problem with kids thinking that it is cool...but hey, I think the RAP COMMUNITY is way more of a problem we must deal with - so this is small potatoes compared to this!

two things:

1) She'll forget all about that song by the time she's 5 (and will have moved on to another current tune)

and

2) singing in public at 4 is how Stevie got her start. Gawd only knows what Grandpa had her singing in bars

in conclusion, I dont think this little girl singing that song at a wedding will damage her psyche, granted it wasnt the most TASTEFUL of songs but at least it wasnt RAP.

is this the same as black people using n----r? if you use it to describe yourself within a community, it's not offensive? maybe i am too PC for my own good.

not everything should be glamorized

ITA.

i'm not going after anyone, i just really hate that song. maybe i read too much into it. as for the kid singing the song, eh. i'd rather my child learn other things. i knew every word to 'why don't we get drunk and screw' by the time i was seven or eight and i turned out all right.

Eh. I think it's cute & funny. But I know what you guys are saying too. A few weeks ago we went to my niece's (4 hour long ) dance recital. Ages 2 through senior citizens, all colors & sizes, several different styles (jazz, tap, ballet, hip hop, free form, etc.)

The hip hop group, ages 8 through 10 maybe, was incredible. One little girl especially. At one point, she did that butt shaking dance. I don't know how else to describe it - like when you jiggle your butt really fast? And another move where you're moving the butt up & down? Not grinding, not humping, not freaking, nothing that bad.

It wasn't vulgar, but part of me thought "whoa, should that little girl be moving like that?" Then I thought "well, if her teachers & mom feel that it's OK, who am I to judge? She's having a great time & she's damn good too."

What do you mean by "rap community?" The artists? the fans? and what kind of rap are you referring to? (it's not all gangsta rap)

I think ignorant, drunken rednecks are as much of a "problem" as any other stereotypically "hell-raising" group in society .

Right. I think a kid singing along to Getting Jiggy Wit It is not a big deal whereas a kid singing along to "shoot up ma ho's" is not so good. There are some in the "rap community" who are working against the negative stereotypes and don't put loads of garbage into their music.

It would be bad if she used cuss words in another context (which almost all kids do at sometime, anyway) and her mother didn't explain there were places where it isn't appropriate to use those words. But that wasn't the case here. I think it's cute she was singing. I mean, it's just "hell", which isn't even a bad word. It isn't any worse than when I was three I was singing "lousy lovers, pick their pray but they etc."? Also, last time I checked, "victoria's secret" wasn't a bad word.
I think you'd have to be pretty uptight to take offense at that, especially taking into account the nature of children.
Also, I like that song. I actually think it has somewhat of a good message. And people are supposed to have fun at a wedding, and sing and stuff.

I guess I just figured had her mother explained to her where it was and was not appropriate to use "those words" then she wouldnt' have been on stage singing them at a wedding. I'm really not going to lose any sleep over it thinking this girl is going to be scarred for life, (or I am for that matter). I just think it was a tad distasteful. And I worked at Victoria's Secret for two years. Not much comes out of that store that is fit for 4 year olds. well...I guess I'm biased though. I worked "lingerie". There is the "body" section. Maybe she meant the lotions and such . But like I said-I'm not really losing any sleep over it, and glad I brought it up 'cause it seems to be stimulating SOME conversation on this board!!!

and btw. I like the song too. Have it on my playlist and listen to it quite often. Although I'll never listen to it the same way again!!!

But the kid won't know what victoria's secret, or any of that other stuff, really means.

^^This is true.

I just grew up totally different. I wasn't allowed to say cuss words around my parents regardless if I was quoting God himself now I cuss all the time. I remember the first cuss word I said in front of my mom. I said the word "ass" (I was about 5) and I looked up at my mom like "oh...****...I'm in sooo much trouble" I just started crying hoping to get out of it. It worked, but I didnt' make that mistake again!!!

I also have a friend that loved that song "damn, i wish i was your lover" and she wasn't allowed to sing that part when it came on. I need to ask her...did she just say....".......... I wish I was your lover" or fill it in with "darn" or something similar

I LOVED LOVED that song when it came out - but being that I was 12 my mom forbade me to sing it and I couldn't buy the tape. At the time I was pissed, but now I understand - it's really not appropriate for 12 year olds to be singing about making love.

I think when boundaries for kids are let down bad things happen - walk into any classroom or place with lots of kids and you'll see that - kids are getting really scary.

Talking Darn...

imagine my surprise when I saw the title of this thread and thought it would be about that white trash wedding of Pamela "Blow Up skank Doll" Anderson & Robbie "Kid Hack" Ritchie...

Such disappointment, tsk, tsk, tsk...

I wasn't allowed to cuss, either, but I don't remember any songs in my day putting that to the test, lyric wise. I do remember some very risque songs being sung in the house, though. Well, maybe a couple.
The reason kids are scary is because their parents suck, and let the media raise their kids, and don't care enough to teach them the appropriate time and place for things. Not because the songs exist, but because the parents don't say anything about the songs, or manners, or anything else for that matter.

I'm sorry. I wasn't trying to insinuate that you did cuss around your parents. I just meant I wasn't allowed to even in a song
