What a horrible way to end, on a bad foul call. When are they going to introduce video playback is the question. Some countries might be plotting the murder of that referee by now. Australia was all over Italy in the end, Hiddink should have again caused the biggest upset of the Cup, how unjust! Why on earth don't they give in and use replay like just about every other sport?

Well the referee kicked out one of our players instead of giving him a yellow card, and we had to play in ten for 50 minutes, so there was a sort of balance.

Sorry the Socceroos are out as well... yeah, bitter to loose it that way. But that's football.

The ref sent off the Italian player rather harshly so I agree there was a kind of balance to it.

Football is a deceptively simple game. You score one more goal than the opposition and you win!

For all Australia's dominence they couldn't convert that into goals.

I think that video replays could work perhaps for penalities and to see if the ball had crossed the line

Well you clearly upset him - he threw up on the pitch!

Brazil 3-0 Ghana

Brazil get through without looking very impressive. Fat Ronald scores again, and he's now the top World Cup scorer in history. He even managed to jog about a bit today

France 3-1 Spain

France successfully cancel out Spain's midfield cleverness, and thanks to Henry's simulation (I still like the guy but today he cheated), a free-kick leads to France's second, and decisive, goal. And I think their third was offside As you can guess, I was supporting Spain

So the quarter-finals are all sorted out:

Argentina-Germany
Italy-Ukraine
Brazil-France
England-Portugal

Not many teams there that have been convincing...

Meh, don't get me started. I am still mourning.

I could start blaming it on the referee, but the entire country has been doing that for days. I will just stick with the 'We were better, Portugal was smarter' phrase. They saw what kind of guy the ref was and took advantage of it. Maybe we should have done that also instead of becoming insanely frustrated. Either way, it killed the entire game.

Sorry David, but I've just become Argentina 's greatest fan, after reading an article on Der Spiegel, where the nicest things said about Italians are some bad comments on our mothers and that we are filthy parasites.

Can you give me the link, please? Or if it was the print edition, the headline and the author. It's hard to imagine that Spiegel would publish something like that!

here it is:
http://www.spiegel.de/sport/fussball...423809,00.html

Apparently the parasites part was partly edited after they got many protests, but the original version of the article was already on many Italian sites.
