They're not together anymore? No, he's not one, but I was waiting to see how long until she convinced him.

Nah, he wouldn't do that. Yes, they broke up. I don't think he cared that much about the scientology - did you see her rack?!

Ryan you are a sweet man, but San Francisco gives me the hives.

I just...... ugh, The Tower and San Francisco don't mix. (I realize I just had a Bob Dole moment, but I don't care...)

I don't get what you are saying here. Why not? Why the hives? Does this mean you'll never visit me?

Honey, Berkeley I can kinda handle. Oakland- nah. All my mother's relatives are from the East Bay- so, I can kinda deal with all those areas. They're all bland suburbs that just run together. But, San Francisco..... OY!!!! IMO the most rude city in the U.S.- way worse than LA- way worse than New York. The only city that I have ever been to that is worse is Rome.

Actually, even though I'm madly in love with this city, I find it to be a difficult one in many ways. It is hard to make friends and even harder to find/sustain a relationship.

Someday I will write about my theories on San Francisco, about how what makes it great (the last place for misfits to find a place) is the same thing that makes it challenging. There is a reason we have more suicides than any other city.

It really is a shame because San Francisco is so beautiful in many ways. However, the city culture is so uniquely San Franciscian that all that beauty just gets washed away.

You mean the people who live there are rude? Seems you'd be right at home! JK.

I think you're right, but not across the boards (obviously). I don't really like the vibe of SF much. It is hard to make friends. Although I really have a hard time believing it is ruder than L.A., unless you are just talking about the gay male population. I mean, c'mon!

Why not Oakland? It's right next to Berkeley, you know! I actually think up to and including downtown Oakland is fairly cool, but try not to go beyond that. And there is a lot of slaggy icky munchies still in Downtown.
The bland suburbs...you mean like concord and pleasant hill and all that up there? I agree. I definitely consider Berkeley and Marin the cream of the bay area crop.
I can't wait to move, though.

P.S. Tower - can't you go over to the White and Gold thread and interp? I think it's getting out of hand...I've been waiting for you.

The thing about LA is not that it is rude, it's just careless. People don't give a **** about anything down here and that might be misconstrued as rudeness, but it's really just indifference. San Francisco, on the other hand, is R U D E - as in bitchy-catty-snippy rude. Even the cable car drivers are rude!

If we're talking about driving road ragey type stuff (which I'm not), I think that exists in every big city with traffic.

Oakland doesn't have enough of a "vibe" for me. I'm really into upscale architecture and natural beauty and Oakland ain't got that from what I've seen.

Hayward, San Ramon, San Leandro, Pleasanton, Livermore, Castro Valley...... BARF!!!!

I am ALL about Marin County- Kentfield, in particular. I have friends who live there and it is sheer gorgeousness. Berkeley is awesome, too. A good friend of mine's dad is a professor at UC Berkeley and I used to visit them waaaaay back when.

I didn't realize that about L.A.. Makes sense.
I disagree about Oakland - not that there isn't much upscale architectural beauty, that is mainly true (there is a bit) - but I'm not into that anyway, it just makes things expensive. (nice to look at, admittedly). I like it's ecclectic, multicultural, regular people hanging out feel. But I like that a lot better in Berkeley. I also think Oakland's older buildings and neighborhoods have a funky charm. But the best thing about Oakland is it's hills.
Marin is beautiful, but it lacks the "just walk downtown and hang out and go to bars and shop and people watch" easy casualness of Berkeley. Although Marin's tiny downtown by Stinson beach is pretty cool - people are nice and laid back, without a trashy or ghetto element (der). But the people tend to be older.
And that is all fine, Marin isn't supposed to be like Berkeley, it has a different beauty. I love hiking there, too - and (don't kill me) I thought Bolinas was awesome, and I liked Fairfax as well. Marin is kind of stupid in the way that all the houses are built precariously on ninety degree hills. But that also contributes to its awesomeness.
None of them are as fun as Chico, though, especially not for this sunbaby.
So, how about that white and gold?

The hills and the redwoods are gorgeous. I actually really like the little old bit of downtown in Oakland, where the farmers' market happens on Fridays, near Broadway. The Grand Lake District, by the Grandlake theatre and Lake Merritt is pretty and looks a lot like parts of LA (that are pretty,) with tall palms and deco apartments.

I like walking around downtown Fairfax, San Anselmo, and hanging out (and getting scoped by divorcees by the bookstore) in Mill Valley, so those parts of Marin have the walking district. If you want to find some spoiled, rude adults, though, Marin has a bundle. Being in line with any of them is like being stuck in a car with nap-deprived toddlers. The hiking is amazing, but there aren't many secret spots any longer, so you find crowds in many of the great Marin hikes.

I never thought of San Francisco as a City of rude people, but it has changed a lot in the last decade. In my experience it was always easy to meet people, but hard to make plans because we would all flake, and there are many distractions. This also applies to romantic relationships.

Default on Newsom

I didn't expect much from him when he ran for Mayor. I just thought he was a spoiled rich kid, a dilettante but he has proved to be quite brave, and I think he has been a good mayor. I clearly didn't know anything about him, I had jsut read some of his opinions on emergency aid for the homeless, and I didn't agree with him, but I think he has spent a lot of time considering his policies, and I think he is a caring person.
I am glad he has made these statements, and I wonder how it will play out.

That is what I meant in my comments above. You can meet lots of people in SF, but difficult to make lasting relationships/friendships.

Can't agree with you at all on that one. I find beauty and amazing people all the time here. But I've lived here long enough to know where to look and what to avoid.
