one of the most interesting artists out there - and singer of one of my favorite songs, Give It Up. at NOTS, I was backstage with his "daughter" Ericka Aviance. why hasn't this been publicized more? where are the leaders of the community?

anyway, here's the story.

NEW YORK - A singer suffered a broken jaw and other injuries in an attack by a group yelling anti-gay slurs, yet he hopes to perform again by the end of the month, police and his publicist said.

Kevin Aviance, 38, whose songs have topped the Billboard dance chart, is expected to be released Monday from the hospital where he underwent surgery, publicist Len Evans said.

Four people were arrested on hate-crime charges, police said.

Aviance's jaw is wired shut, but he hopes to perform in the city's Gay Pride parade at the end of the month, Evans said. The agent had said earlier that Aviance would not be able to sing at the event.

"He's going to try to get his strength back so that he can perform," he said.

Aviance's song "Alive" hit the top of the chart in 2002. His other popular songs have included "Give It Up," released in 2004, and "Din Da Da," which topped the Billboard dance chart in 1997.

A group of six or seven males attacked the singer early Saturday on a corner in Manhattan's East Village, Evans said. There were passers-by, but no one stopped to help as the attackers threw objects at him, Evans said.

Aviance performs in drag but was "dressed like a boy" when he was attacked, Evans said.

The four people arrested ranged in age from 16 to 20.

yeah, it happened early early Saturday morning as he was leaving Phoenix on his way home. it's terribly sad.

exactly. you are exactly correct. while they run around chasing celebrities asses to give them awards, incidents like these are neglected. pride month this month, all the people with their rainbow flags while people are being bashed in plain view. it's such bull****.

I bet if Kevin were straight, more famous or a different skin color this would get the attention it deserves.

further information is that Kevin was attacked with objects the idiots found in nearby dumpsters...including a paint can

We have a huge rainbow flag at the corner of Castro and Market, which is put at half-mast when "well-known" gays die. The "leaders" in charge of it initally refused to lower it for Gwen Araujo, a latina transgendered teenager, who was murdered. This a month after lowering it for a gay white cop who was killed in duty.

When we called the so-called leaders to ask that the flag be lowered, the answer was "we have to draw the line somewhere". That led to a lot of screaming and finally they lowered it.

I remember Gwen. such a horrible story. she and Jessie Valencia did not get the kind of recognition their stories should have.

I think he wanted to draw the line after the "G" in "LGBT".

sadly that's where a lot of people in the "community" want to draw the line.

Interstingly enough I've been reading articles lately about the racism that exists in the LGBT "community" and that is SO disturbing
