I've tried, but Jenny Lewis just doesn't do it for me. I've listened to some of her Rilo Kiley stuff, and I've listened to some her solo album, but she doesn't click for me. Which isn't to say she's not a great artist; I'm just not into her.

I bought Fox Confessor about three weeks ago, and I've listened to it over 20 times since then. I never listen to anything that much, especially not in that short a time.

Plus, redheads, man. Can't beat redheads.
can i bask with you?

i just bought fox confessor yesterday and it's amazing.

I was wondering how people like you have heard so much music. I never listen to anything I like less than 20 times, and it's more like 1000 times, really.
I'm not genetically predisposed to musoism. Or I'm very loyal. Or I'm just a simple girl. Or I'm someone who only likes a few things a lot. Yeah, that's it. I don't just like things willy nilly. Although I could use a willy right now, nilly would be a super bonus.

Sure, everybody's got different ways of listening to music. I'll listen to something a bunch of times when I first get it, mostly internalize it, and then I just don't need to listen to it that often after that. If I listen to something too much, I'll burn myself out on it. There are albums that I absolutely love that I haven't listened to in months; eventually, I'll get around to them again, listen once or twice, and that'll be it for a while. I've had iTunes since September, and Fox Confessor is far and away the album I've listened to the most in that time. There are a handful (it's a big handful, but still a handful) of songs I've listened to maybe 10-15 times, but most stuff is between 1 and 9. And then there's still a good 2600 songs that I haven't listened to at all since I've had iTunes.

God bless you, iTunes, for allowing me to thoroughly quantify and analyze my music listening habits.

Huh. Do you like it all? I feel like if I don't like something enough to listen to it lots, I won't get it. Not like I get CD's much anyway, but you see what I mean.
It seems like you remember a lot, but now I'm thinking that percentage wise, maybe you don't. Either way, your way seems expensive. I mean, you buy it just to listen to it a few times, then maybe a few more times.
ooh, that reminds me! Trackie sent me a mixed CD....I better listen even if I won't like any songs. *maybe I will, that would be a nice suprise. I hope she remembered I hate grunge and anything that resembles it*

Neko Case actually reads/performs on a DVD I have for my daughter. The DVD is 5 or 6 Scholastic books adapted to video, and Neko sings in this semi-50's style/folksy style for a story called "I Want a Dog." It's very cute...one of those ones you end up singing to yourself when you don't even realize it. It has made me want to pick up one of her CDs.

Not to threadjack, but I highly recomend these Scholastic DVDs to anyone with kids. I've got another one with Cyndi Lauper doing "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly" (Burl Ives does it on the one with Neko Case on it). They use great stories, and they have a very nostalgic quality for me...reminding me of those film strips I watched in elementary school on the 70s!

I like almost everything I buy, yeah. I don't usually buy a CD without listening to several tracks first, unless it's by an artist I already know I really like. I listen to a lot of stuff that I don't like, in which case I don't by the album.

It seems like I remember a lot about what?

Yes, my way is somewhat expensive, but I'm not going to start stealing music from artists I like and want to support.

I don't "just" listen to something a few times, or rather I don't see it that way. If I listen to an album ten times and internalize it and then listen to it only once every few months, that's perfect for me. If I listened to the same album multiple times every day for a month, I'd get burnt out on it and go completely nuts from hearing it that much. I own a bunch of Led Zeppelin albums, but I never listened to any of them more than once or twice for nearly four years, because I had gotten so f***ing sick of hearing Zeppelin on the ****ty ClearChannel classic rock station I used to listen to at my job at that time. Only within the past few months did I finally start listening to them again.

But people experience music in different ways. You like listening to the same songs over and over again, I like listening to a lot of different stuff, and listening to the same songs only occasionally. I just have restless tastes. The last few albums I listened to were Miles Davis's On the Corner, Neko's new album, a mix of 60s Motown songs, John Coltrane's A Love Supreme, an album of Congolese music, and Led Zeppelin's fourth album. Go figure.

Wow, am so impressed - I didn't think you were really going to ask her!
Right on!

Like I said, though, "it's the devil she loves..."

p.s. a friend of mine, Erik Davis, wrote a book on Zep IV for the 33 &1/3 series. I think you might enjoy his use of language.

It's her best to date. I am really enjoying Fox Confessor though, it might be creeping up as my favorite.

I've seen Neko Case 3 times and she's always been fabulous. Jyqm, that is so cool that she was wearing a White Album tee-shirt! The last time I saw her she wore an old, antique Masonic robe the entire show . She didn't have any make-up on and looked rather homely. I've seen her other times when she looked really good.

One time I saw her with Calexico. Talk about your show of shows!

I'm taking credit for all the emo saddiez kids listening to Neko. It's my right.

Neko is my favorite artist. Period. I just had to miss her stop through Chicago w/ Martha Wainwright and I was depressed much longer than I should've been.

My favorite album of hers is actually The Tigers Have Spoken, the live record. I thought it was an instant classic from the second my first spin of the album was over.

She always looks different. Not even just in photos, but even in person, she'll turn a certain way and suddenly look like a different person. She wasn't wearing much or any make-up on Friday and occasionally looked rather... less than hawt. But when she was singing or laughing, or when she stood in the light a certain way, she looked hElLa FiNe.

Oh me, oh my. Did they play with her? I mean, did they play as her band?

I just might go to Hamburg on Thursday and see her again...

Above is a link to a live version of "Stinging Velvet" with Calexico playing as her band. They did separate sets and she would sing with them a couple of songs on that tour.

She also did a great interview with Pitchfork (blah) that made me laugh my butt off-

And if Celine Dion is supposedly the great singer that she says she is why is there auto tune on every ****ing word in her songs? Can't you just hit it, Celine? Do you have another baby book to shoot? You gotta paint your baby to look like a pot of peas? What are you doing that you can't be singing in the studio? It's your ****ing job!

Thanks, this interview is great, especially all the stuff about horrible singers. However:

You're right, Neko, this is why you should be my girlfriend!!!

They toured together (or at the same time, not sure) but met up at Antone's and she sang on a couple of songs with them backing her. We came to see Calexico not even knowing that she was their "special guest" so we were more than pleasantly surprised. She dueted with one of the guys in the band and it was awesome. You could tell she was really nervous and in some ways uncharacteristically bashful! I think she felt self-conscious when they asked her to come up and sing a few songs. It was really cute, she had her hair up in a pontytail and had on a t-shirt and jeans. She was NOT expecting to get up in front of an audience that night, but she did a great impromptu job!
