Ah, then a 2 month break and the dreaded residency (anesthesiology) begins...4 more years. I swear I don't think this is ever going to end, but I keep trying to think about the future. What BLOWS MY MIND, is that I've been out of high school for 8 years now...I still look (and oftentimes act) like I'm 18! I'm getting more and more nervous by the day but also equally excited. We'll see...

Brad
How you doin'.....

Congrats, Dr. Brad. That's wonderful.

I have a doctor of optometry degree. My job is very fun, to me anyway. Or maybe I am just an eye geek

Actually, I just went to the eye doctor for the first time and it was fun. My doctor was all happy and funny and helpful.
So maybe being an eye doctor really is fun. I would go back.

I'm a high school grad and have taken a handful of community college courses. It's been a year now since I've taken anything and I really need to get back on the horse, so to speak, but my work schedule makes it tough.

BA in Psychology. It maaks fur sum nice wallpapir.
All I ever wanted to do was music. I was making a decent living doing so, but felt VERY guilty being a professional partier, sleeping til 3PM, so I went back and finished my degree.
Then resumed my previous lifestyle!

BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts), majoring in Visual Communications. Managed to lend itself quite well to my current career as a fine jewellery designer.

Congratulations Brad- really! What an accomplishment.

Oh, and by the way, it *was* my gall bladder- I have stones and all that.

I thought with Psych you could only get a BS? How does that work? I've heard of a BA in Psych before, I jjust never knew how it worked.

I also have a BA in Psych. At my school they literally had 2 checkboxes for Psych, Do you want a BA or a BS? Please check one. I just thought a BS in Psych lent itself to ridicule. Plus I fancy myself more artsy than sciency, although I love science, so I picked the BA.

I was originally a biology major but I found I really hated lab with a passion. That didn't seem to be the right path. That formaldehyde smell, ugh, I hated walking into that building altogether. I figured that meant I shouldn't go into the field. Plus I loved my psych class. I went with my passion.

However, Janet is right, you need an advanced degree to use psych which I didn't get. After doing an internship at a rehab I found I just didn't have the ego strength and maturity to do clinical work, it would take too much out of me. I did work with mentally retarded adults for a year and I loved it. But I made 17k a year and when I got my raise it was $2.50 a week. Hard to believe but true! That was an insult and a slap in the face.

Sometimes I think about going back to psych now that I am more mature and can handle it. As soon as I get my debt down a bit I will go back to school for something.

^ So true about Psych. You MUST get a Masters to really make any money or do anything as far as therapy & treatments go. When I worked with the mentally ill teens, the direct care staff (ie - the ones who got the crap kicked out of them daily, the ones with most stress, the ones carrying out the programs set by the therapists) were only making about $9 an hour.

Almost all of them were going back for their MS or PhD.

Well, the difference for me was taking a couple of extra math classes! THAT was the difference in BA and BS. I didn't have the easiest time with stats, so I thought, "do the BA, and f*ck this math sh*t!".

I tried to talk myself into going back for my Master's for a couple of years, but I was just SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO tired of school.........

I hear that Homes. I got the books for the GRE and all that. I just couldn't do it to myself, the stress of undergrad was over and I was so relieved. I just wasn't ready. I would love to do it now, first I need to find a husband. Actually I think I'd get a degree in hi tech at this point having been in the industry for 10+ years. Maybe geared toward educational software or something like that. Not sure, I also thought of getting a techie MBA or a masters in tech writing. We'll see.

This COMPLETELY describes my situation. I TRIED to talk myself into it, and I just couldn't do it. I always worked one or two jobs while in school, and I was just completely exhausted at that point.

I then started making really good money doing sound, and here I still am....

So you didn't have to take Statistics? What about Research Methods? I'm asking because those classes were SO hard for me. And if I didn't have to take them in order to have a degree, I will kill someone.

As far as the GRE goes, I took it right before I graduated, and I didn't study. It showed, because I scored a 330 in math! I scored a 724 in Verbal (which is good, but still...), and I don't remember how I did in writing. But anyway, the GRE is just one little piece of what you need to get into graduate school. If you're stroong everywhere else, don't worry about it. My point is, don't let the GRE stand in your way of thinking about grad school.

All that being said, if you're making good money and happy where you are, screw it!

Do any of ye Psychology folks have any advice for me?

I know the system in Ireland is probably different to where you guys are, but virtually everyone I've spoken to here has tried to put me off. Really getting me down...
