Default Band Face Off - Semifinals 7

Johnny Cash won the last round and joins Tina Turner, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Led Zeppelin, Joni Mitchell and Tom Petty in the finals.

Next up: two pop legends...

I had to go with The Beach Boys. Both are hugely influential, legendary bands, but the simple fact is that I really like the Beach Boys as a band, whereas I prefer each of the members of the Beatles as solo acts.

This presented me with a quandry. Although the Beatles piss me off, I also like some of their songs, and definitely know more of them than I do the beach boys. But, when I hear beach boys songs, they make me pretty happy. But, I am not familiar with much of the BB's work. So, I think really that the Beatles catologue is more varied and compelling. I wanted to pick the beach boys, but is it fair to do so just because I think the Beatles are way overrated? Probably not. And, though they are overrated, IMO, the Beatles still have a lot of cool songs that I'm stoked to hear if they come on the radio. And in a bizarre twist, Beatles lyrics are a contributing factor for me.
I own albums from neither.
Also, I have not used capital letters here because of laziness.

Beach Boys. The Beatles are way overrated, IMO, and I don't get why people cream themselves over them so much. Nothing special.

You know I'm voting for Joni no matter who you put her up against, right?

Well, Even though I'm presonally not a huge Beatles fan, I do realize what an incredible impact they had on rock n roll, so they got my vote

I guess that's just not a good enough reason for me to vote for them. Lots of bands made incredible impacts on rock & roll, but 60% of them suck ass. Which is why I listen to jazz.

It's my opinion that people such as yourself are idiots. You're a fan of Fleetwood Mac and The Beatles are "nothing special"? Are you able to comprehend the course of modern music at all and where The Beatles took it? If they're overrated then pop music is overrated and you should be on the Bach message boards.

It is my opinion that people such as yourself - who lurk in messageboards and, after hardly saying a word in the two years that you've been a member, suddenly pop out of hiding to openly call someone an idiot for no good reason - are assholes.

My mother is a huge Beatles fan, and my brother is a pretty big fan as well. Myself, I've never been a major fan (though I do have some favorite songs), but the mark they've left on contemporary pop/rock music is undeniable. They easily win out over the Beach Boys in my book.

No, I have an asshole but it's really not relevant. If you're going to be a fan of modern pop music then you don't say The Beatles are "nothing special", simple as that. Only those pompous old guys who also panicked at the site of Elvis get to call them "nothing special". It's simple logic. It's like discussing physics and saying Einstein was nothing special.

What the Beatles did for pop music is something special, no doubt about that, but the actual music that they made is not.
