This thread is making me crave deviled eggs in the worst way. Why are they so freakin' good and why do you only ever get to have them at Sunday brunch buffets?? I could seriously kill for a deviled egg right now!

Blood Spots
Also called meat spots. Occasionally found on an egg yolk. Contrary to popular opinion, these tiny spots do not indicate a fertilized egg. As an egg ages, the yolk takes up water from the albumen to dilute the blood spot so, in actuality, a blood spot indicates that the egg is fresh. Both chemically and nutritionally, these eggs are fit to eat. The spot can be removed with the tip of a knife, if you wish.

And you can certainly eat a fertile egg:

Fertile Eggs
Eggs which can be incubated and developed into chicks. Fertile eggs are not more nutritious than nonfertile eggs, do not keep as well as nonfertile eggs and are more expensive to produce. Fertile eggs may contain a small amount of male hormone, but there are no known advantages.

This may sound strange, but I thought all eggs at one point could be incubated into chicks as all eggs are the fertilized product?

Ahem, I beg to differ. Mi Madres has the best migas in Austin and I will lay down my life to that claim.

The best migas of course have fresh jalapenos chopped up and mixed in...none of that canned stuff! And yes, IHOP migas (or migas from any chain restaurant) are an abomination!

And while we're on the subject of egg dishes, I like my eggs wrapped up in a breakfast taco with some chorizo or just plain scrambled with a side of carne guisada! But of course I'll eat eggs any old way just as long as they're not slimy. Hate slimy eggs!

Most eggs you would buy at your typical grocery store are unfertilized as I understand it. So in that fact, no you can not incubate the unfertile egg into a chick.

Did you know that sometimes a young hen will lay an egg with no yolk? Poor wee thing.

And I read that brown eggs are more expensive because they come from larger hens, which eat more food. LOL.

HOW DOES A HEN FERTILIZE AN EGG?

When a rooster mates with a hen, the semen is stored in the oviduct for later use. When she gets ready to lay the egg,a sperm fertilizes the egg before the shell surrounds it. The sperm is viable for about a month in the oviduct.

Thing is, they keep the bitchy hens away from the Rooster. He's just there to keep them clucking and laying eggs. But there is generally no fertilization going on.
