You can definitely spot the goyim on the list. Look at all that crap on the bagels: bits of fruit, peanut butter, hummus, alfalfa, honey nuts, flavored cream cheese, strawberries, blackberry jam, etc. etc. etc.

We all know about Bruegger's, but is there a sort of "Gourmet" bagel place out there somewhere?

best bagels - hands down: "st. viateur bagel" in montreal.

you have not had a real bagel til you've had a montreal bagel.

Yuck! Just butter for me, thanks!

Maybe I'm just a simple country boy, but the idea of smoked cod on a bagel doesn't sound good!

I've always wanted to go to Montreal for a multitude of reasons, but the main ones would be to try Montreal smoked meat on a bagel and then poutine. I loooove poutine, but I imagine it as being soooo much better in Montreal.

you won't be sorry if you go to montreal! hope you do get there.

here's a tip: smoked meat on RYE - not on a bagel! go to schwartz's deli on st. laurent for your smoked meat. THEN - walk up the street to st. viateur street... and get some still-warm and chewy bagels for dessert!

poutine... well.... not quite a proud specialty of montreal. but if you go outside of montreal you'll get the real thing. it's all about cheese curds and the sauce. me? can't stomach the stuff.

Hmmmm...hummus on a bagel...that could be the start of Middle East peace! Gotta start somewhere I guess.

My faves depend on my mood at the moment. But, usually, it's: WAY TOO MUCH whipped cream cheese on a toasted cinnamon-raisin bagel.

I also like:

Lox & cream cheese (on an onion bagel)
Black Raspberry jam & cream cheese (on a plain or egg bagel)
Strawberry flavored cream cheese (on plain or fruity bagels)
"Garden Vegetable" cream cheese (on plain, onion, or poppy-seed bagels only)

Panera Bread cinnamon bagels are so good. That name drives me nuts though because it is redundant. We also have Finagle a Bagel 'round here which has good bagels. The best bagel I've ever had was on Long Island, so moist in center and chewey/crunchy on outside, perfection!

I like cream cheese straight up best on a bagel but also enjoy the flavored varieties.

My favorite - a toasted "everything" bagel with (and must be put on in this exact order, on each half, from the bottom up):

Reduced fat cream cheese
Chopped purple onion - stuck in the cream cheese
Smoked, peppered salmon
Tiny bit of torn or shredded lettuce
Thinly sliced tomatoes with a bit of salt and pepper

Dee-lish!

And whenever I make a blueberry or cinnamon/raisin bagel, I toast it and put either peanut butter or cream cheese on one half, and margarine on the other half.
