They got what, best director and best original screenplay? How about score? I didn't catch that one.

I still think the academy played it safe by not giving BBM best picture yet playing the hand-out by awarding Ang Lee best director. Give me a break .

The audience aren't used to a funny host, I guess...they didn't know what to do with themselves.

The scene at the end was the only part that made me react at all. It had too many characters, too many plots, and not enough screen time was given to any of them to allow the audience to invest emotion in them. The plot was an unbelievable contrivance, and some of the lines in the script were unintentionally funny. It is the weakest film to win Best Picture in all the years I have watched the awards. It isn't crap, but it isn't anywhere near the league of the others nominated.
I totally agree. I hated Crash. To me, it was just standard Hollywood fare

And who else thinks that Matt Dillon probably wasn't even acting in that role? I can't stand that guy.

I love him, but did NOT believe that his performance was Oscar-worthy (see my post on page 11 of this thread).

I think this was the BEST Oscar show in the last 20 years (or longer). Jon Stewart was GREAT! I hope they make him the permanent host.

Can't say I agree with the results of the voting, but I can't really complain, since I don't get to vote.

Yes indeed. "The Oscars" is self indulgent style over content and utter ****e.

The best performances and films rarely win anything. The academy is stuffed full of pompous self importants all trying not to age. It's the ultimate country club. If you don't play by the rules or your face doesn't fit in forget it. I actually quite admire George Clooney (never thought I would say that) because he has managed to walk the thin line between Academy acceptability and remaining true to your craft.

Love Jon Stewart, thought he was great.

I loved Crash but I think Brokeback was better.

Someone had said that the Crash character storylines were too simple or something, that's what made the movie, the simplicity of the characters yet such a strong message.

5,000 of the 6,000 Academy voters live in L.A., Crash takes place in L.A., that's why it won.

Hollywood is just not quite ready for a gay cowboy movie to win Best Pic.

I saw Walk the Line and I thought Reese was great, but an Academy award?

I totally agree. It's a disgrace Crash won. I absolutely hated it too. The Academy were definitely playing it safe especially with so many political movies in the running this year, racism was obviously the safest option. Shame it's a terrible, self-important movie.

I'm glad Philip Seymour Hoffman won though. He's an incredible actor and really deserved it. I think Reese Witherspoon deserved her Oscar too but Rachel Weisz?? Catherine Keener was robbed!

Yes it's interesting that racism was the safest option for an academy that has seen only 14 African-American nominations for best actor in it's entire history and an academy that only took 74 years to award best actress to an African-American nominee.

I absolutely loved the movie Crash and I was glad that it won the Oscar. Now, I have not seen Brokeback Mountain so my opinion might change once I see that movie but I dont see what all the hype is about anyway?

Exactly HOW difficult (and a stretch of the imagination) is it to play a real life person? Maybe the Academy needs to make another category for "biographical interpretation". Heath Ledger was robbed.

Oh, and calling all casting directors...Philip Seymour Hoffman should be cast in the lead when it comes time for The Elton John Story.

Rachel Weisz was a "make up" vote for her not being nominated for the two Mummy movies!

Lol. But it's a point worth mentioning. They did it when they awarded best supporting actress to Judi Dench for an average performance in "Shakespeare In Love" when it was an absolute disgrace she did not win best actress the year before for "Mrs Brown"

A token handout.

So you thought Crash deserved the Oscar over Brokeback Mountain?
Also you don't think the Academy may be well aware of its history and wanted to make a statement with awarding the Oscar to Crash?
Roll your eyes all you want. Giving it to Crash was giving the Oscar for the message not the art of movie making IMO

I think Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams were both deserving as well though, I would have been just as happy if either had won. It was an especially tough category for Best Actor this year.
I don't think playing a real person makes an actor's performance any less powerful personally.
