We were always taught in school that the U.S.A. is a "Democratic Republic"

True, but the electoral college is dispositive of my point that we are a Republic, not a democracy.

BTW - Poor Al, will he ever win

once again. a "Republic" is a body of people who agree on a particular political system (in this case, a representative democracy). please see
posts #33 and #35 for FACTS to support this statement.

you are using the terms "republic" and "republican form of Government" as if they were interchangeable and they are NOT.

and your point is?

if you'll go back and re-read this thread with an OPEN mind, I think you'll see that we in fact were talking about two different things here (1) a political construct (Democracy--I maintain America uses the representational form) and (2) a body of people (Republic) who agree to be bound by a particular construct

So, your phrase "and [to] the Republic for which it stands" refers to the fact that our Flag represents the Republic of America (the citizens of America)

your other example used the phrase "Republican form of Government" which in our case means Representational Democracy. We are not a Monarchy (tho Bush thinks we are!) We are not a Dictatorship (see previous!) We are a Democracy. We do not use direct Democracy because that is too cumbersome and unwieldy. That is why we elect Senators and Representatives and Governors to represent us. The idea being that the person who wins election is presumed to be wanted by the majority of the people.

I can agree with you that America is a republic--in that we are united citizens (hopefully!) but our political scheme is Democracy, Representational Democracy.

look familiar? you confused the two ideas. We may LIVE in a Republic, but we ARE a Democracy politically.

Jason, you just quoted yourself OUT OF CONTEXT. That response was NOT to Markolas' question! SHAME ON YOU!

and again, your answer is WRONG. you are mixing up the term for the body of citizens (Republic) with our political system (Democracy). And as for your argument about the Electoral College, I say "Representative Democracy".

You're not going to win THIS ONE.
