In the shadow of the castle walls, wherever those walls were Well, he used to love to be behind those walls with her Obviously, no matter where she's off to, the person used to love to be with her. He loved being in her "kingdom," or in this case, "queendom." Within these walls, well he watched from the corridor Watched from the corner of his eye Seemingly waiting for the time When her castle walls would all fall down But then there came a time when he wanted her to fail, like he knew it was coming and was waiting for it. There is a different interpretation that I wonder about, which is much more pleasant. This interp. involves the "walls" being like the guard Stevie put up around herself so no one could get too close to her. But she let this guy in those walls, and he's waiting for her just to let it go, let her guard down and let her walls fall for everyone...to show that she is vulnerable. After all, she also talks about her "walls" in Smile at You. And even the first two lines of the chorus reflects this, but then the rest of the song doesn't quite fit it too well. So, back to my first interp. Yes, it was a strain on her Watching her castles fall down Oh oh, but there was a time when he called her Angel Where in the world did you come from First two lines obvious, but then you get this line where he USED to call her Angel, where did you come from. These two lines seem to me that she's saying "this guy used to be so loving and supportive, and now he's loving the fact that I'm falling apart. Where did THIS guy come from?" There was a light that lighted the way to the chamber Where they spend all their time Then there's the bridge, again showing there was once love, but it's gone. There WAS a light, but it's burnt out. The love is gone. So, I guess this song CAN be taken to be romantic if you go with the second interpretation that I mentioned...about the guy wanting her to just let go of her guard. However, I like my first interpretation more, if only because it better explains the last two lines of the chorus. I don't see how else those lines could be taken.

The "they" part always through me a curve, but I figured she was talking about "they" as the arguments the two would have...how they would love each other, then hate each other because of a fight. Cool, thanks!

I really like this song, to me its such a sad song. It's basically saying that everything around you is falling apart and theres nothing you can really do. Your basically a shadow of yourself left reminiscing about the good times and wondering where did all this trouble come from.
I' love for Stevie give this song new life.

I love this song. Once again, one of many Stevie missed oportunities, as I believe this should have been the 2nd single (with accompanying video!!) This song is so catchy & had THE sound of late 80s pop written all over it! I worked at a retail record store, during my college years, when OSOTM was released. And of course I played this record every chance I got, to my managers consternation! And even she could not get this song out of her head, as she went about humming the chorus...lingering long after the record finished playing. |

Love this song, love love love. Would love to hear it with an orchestra and see if more people appreciated it - so many people are put off by the very 80s production of TOSOTM.
