Default Joni Mitchell Tribute...

February 1st at Carnegie Hall!

What do you do when an iconic folk singer is, in her own words, basically retired?

That's right... host a tribute concert! Which is exactly what's happening Feb. 1 at Carnegie Hall, where a star-filled lineup will compete for stage space as they croon Mitchell’s hits. Confirmed performers include Alison Krauss, Cowboy Junkies, eels, Lori Anderson, Suzanne Vega, Shawn Colvin, Joan Osborne, Marc Cohn, Joseph Arthur, Tracy Chapman, Judy Collins, Bebel Gilberto, Betty LaVette, Meshell Ndegeocello, Amy Grant, Dar Williams and the Wood Brothers.

Concert tickets range from $30-$225, with proceeds going to the Music for Youth Organization, which supports music-education programs and funds scholarships across the country.

For ticket information, visit www.carnegiehall.org

Hopefully they will record...I'm so excited Amy is going to be performing!!!

awww man I know!

I'm guessing that Amy will do Big Yellow Taxi though...considering she covered it for her House of Love album and it was somewhat of a radio hit for her...

Naw, man, she's going to do a kick-ass take on "The Magdalene Laundries."

Oh, wouldn't that be delicious! I'd love to see the reaction to her singing "the bloodless brides of Jesus" line....

Oy!!!

One of her most beautiful songs, ever- IMO. Heartbreaking.

The Magdalene Laundries

"I was an unmarried girl
I'd just turned twenty-seven
When they sent me to the sisters
For the way men looked at me...
Branded as a jezebel-
I knew I was not bound for Heaven
I'd be cast in shame
Into the Magdalene... laundries

Most girls come here pregnant
Some by their own fathers
Bridget got that belly
By her parish priest...
We're trying to get things white as snow
All of us woe-begotten-daughters
In the streaming stains
Of the Magdalene... laundries

Prostitutes and destitutes
And temptresses like me--
Fallen women--
Sentenced into dreamless drudgery ...
Why do they call this heartless place
Our Lady of Charity?
Oh, charity!

These bloodless brides of Jesus
If they had just once glimpsed their groom
Then they'd know, and they'd drop the stones
Concealed behind their rosaries...
They wilt the grass they walk upon-
They leech the light out of a room
They'd like to drive us down the drain
At the Magdalene... laundries

Peg O'Connell died today...
She was a cheeky girl-
A flirt-
They just stuffed her in a hole!!
Surely to God you'd think at least some bells should ring!
One day I'm going to die here, too
And they'll plant me in the dirt...
Like some lame bulb
That never blooms... come any spring
Not any spring...
No, not any spring...
Not any spring...
"

It's one of my favorites. Have you seen "The Magdalene Sisters"? That's a tough flick to watch.

I don't think I could handle watching that movie. That kind of evil is just too tough for me to take. What's really awful is that Joni wrote this song in 1992 and the last Magdalene laundry closed in 1996! Disgusting.

That's quite a musical lineup I must say. Judy Collins alone makes it worht the price of admission.

Emmylou just recorded "The Magdalene Laundries" for an upcoming Joni tribute album. I think I may die from the suspense generated by having to wait to hear it.

http://www.emmylou.net/#new

And her album with Knopfler is finally going to be released. Hooray.

I'm not usually into tribute albums, but that sounds like it could be pretty good.
