Lightbulb Christmas ideas

Watching Oprah, the Super Nanny, Jo Frost is on telling people how to discipline their bad-a$$ kids. LOL I just had an idea for folks with kids. I don't have kids, but I was raised well.

If you are trying to teach your kids how to give to those less fortunate, you might want to ask you children to write down what they want (maybe 10, 15, 20 things) for Christmas. Then, you tell them that if they go through their toys and pick 10 (15, 20, etc.) things to give to charity, mom and dad will get you the things on your list. If you only find 5 things to give, you'll get 5 things for Christmas. This way, they won't have an overabundance of toys (dang, my cousins' kids had a buttload of toys, sheesh) and they will learn how good it feels to give.

Feel free to share your ideas.

That actually doesn't sound like a bad idea. I can't use it, Olivia is only 3 and still believes in Santa. But it does sound like a good idea for older children.

My friend has been getting toys for her son second hand. Things like Legos are timeless, she uses a site called freecycle which may just be local here, I am not sure. I'm not a mom so I can't say. Just love them. Also, they do what their parents do.

I guess, but to me I think people, not only kids, should not have to be rewarded to give. I don't think that will teach them that it feels good to give, it will teach them that they can get new toys if they give. Instead of mom and dad giving their kids that option and just over indulging them again with even more toys, why not eliminate one of the many toys for your kid and give a brand new one to toys for tots, or whatever charity you prefer? I think if you want your child to learn how good it feels to give they should actually see the joy on the faces of the people when they get that new toy.
How about if your child gets an allowance to have part of it seperated each week and put aside to be donated at the end of the year to a charity that you let your kid pick?
