Yeah, I would rather have a gift card to a place that I liked then a shirt that is so not me. Not to mention it was purchased at a place that is so not me. At least if they did put any thought into the gift they 'thought' that I was thinner then I actually am.

That IS true, but giving someone a 50 dollar gift card to somewhere shows me love as well.

Amen. I'm with Alice Lover on this one. The LAST thing I want is some old ugly sweater, that I don't want, clogging up my dresser drawers. And, to add insult to injury, I'd feel like I had to wear it whenever I saw her. My Mom and I always played, "Tell me EXACTLY what you want".

Wow. Would you rather get nothing from someone? I get gift cards from relatives I've not seen in years. They don't particularly "know" what i'm into anymore...I'm all grown up. It's the THOUGHT and EFFORT that counts. They are still giving. I see your point about it being an "empty" effort...but that's not entirely true. They thought about you enough to get you something...and perhaps they thought about you enough NOT to get you something you wouldnt want. Quit being so damned snobbish. We should consider ourselves lucky to live in a country where we can still afford to give and receive gifts from one another.

My relatives have no idea what to buy me, either. Even if I give them suggestions, they still pick out whatever they want. In these instances, I'd rather have a gift card.

It doesn't particularly matter to me. It's not about receiving. I don't care if I receive an empty gift such as a gift card just because someone feels obligated to give me something. The spirit of giving has become bastardized by commercialism and it's pretty sad to me.

If it works for you, that's fine. But I find being given such things to be hollow. That's how I feel, whether you agree with me or not.

They reek more of obligation than anything else.

This statements stinks. You say "afford to give" as if giving is something that should be measured via money spent and material objects. That's not the case, thankfully. Not that anyone would know it these days.

Then give all those gift cards back to the people who send them to you and see how that makes them feel. And then afterwards, look deep down and see how you feel about that, all the while asking yourself if that was the "right" thing to do.

As far as what you said in the last sentence of the above post, I would completely agree. I would take that further, and say that the very concept of Christmas itself has been bastardized. Thus, the reason why I hate this holiday.

Christ! You are confusing the hell out of me. Aren't you the one who friggin totally embarrassed an employee at some store because you didn't get your friggin bargain? Pretty sad to you....You gave us the link to the Black Friday website for Christs sake.

I'm enjoying the fact that "andymaycen" has been quiet since his/her post on page four. Also, I find it somewhat unnerving that no one has back up my rebuttal (also on page four). Even you, dissention! *wink*

I just totally broke all ties with a guy I liked. I would hope we'd be friends but no way.

But I guess that is my Christmas wish right now. I hope you get yours.

I only want gift cards. I never go shopping because I have no money. I love shopping. Give me cards to go shopping with and I am SOOOOOOOOO happy.

It's not empty. But once you hit a certain age ( 28 here) like who knows what I like? Everything I really want is way too expensive and little things I just get myself when I need it.

I just like shopping, that's a gift in itsself!

I love gift cards. My aunt claire has no idea what an ipod is...or what horror movies to buy...or what music I like. A gift card is a PERFECT gift.

I pretty much avoid religious discussions altogether, even in "real life." No one's opinion ever changes and it usually gets ugly.

True...however his statement had to be one of the more offensive ones I've read in some time. And I think I'm one of the more tolerant Ledgies around...generally I just ignore the comments. However I think it's important to remember that just because you don't understand something (i.e Andy's thoughts on Jesus for example), you surely don't want to mock them either. I don't think Mr. Andy would run around the local shopping mall trying to conjure spirits of the dead with ouija boards and candles.

I might have, had I been here I think there's a lot of hypocrisy going round when it comes to discussions about religion anyway. People attacking each other for the wrong reasons with the wrong arguments and so on.
Shame, could be interesting to have an honest open discussion.
