Always two books at the same time. Currently:

- "Naked In Death" by J.D. Robb

&

- "Second Foundation" by Isaac Isimov

The Athena Factor by Michael Gear

and

Tulia by Nate Blakeslee

I have had both authors in for booksignings in several of our stores, so I figured I might want to be familiar with their work.

Athena Factor is very good. It's a thriller about how our current obsession with celebrities is going to dovetail with the new developments in cloning. (I mean, Brad Pitt does have to get his hair cut, so what is his barber sold a strand of hair to a cloning facility? I'd buy a Brad 2.0, that's for sure!)

The Elegant Universe (String Theory) by David Gross

Quantum Physics for dummies basically...

....just a little light afternoon reading.....

The Darling by Russell Banks.

And has anyone read The Story of O? My best friend swears by it and wants me to read it. She's all into erotica .

I'm usually reading two books at a time, too. Now:

Moon Over Purgatory by Bill Johnson (for the third time)
Southern Ladies and Gentlemen by Florence King (for the...I don't know how many times I've read this. It gets funnier each time.)

Have you heard the Hejira on Travelogue ? Shattering. I nonchalantly put the cd on one night about 6 months after my BF and I broke up last year, and about 2/3 of the way through that song I was sobbing so hard I almost puked.

I've heard it. I have mixed feelings about Travelogue. Some of the songs sound great, others I think she should've left alone.

I love that she redid my two favorites for that album, though...Refuge of the Roads and The Last Time I Saw Richard.

I ? Am a jackass. The sob till I puke song is Amelia.

Refuge is a great one as well, and I am also a big fan of Sex Kills and Cherokee Louise. OMG, and Chinese Cafe. Lord. That record...there are only 3 or 4 that don't blow my socks off. Regardless of if I love all the different versions, I am thrilled that she was bold and creative enough to rework them. And I am much happier with the older, deeper voice.

Oh, I really liked the version of Amelia she did for Travelogue.

Chinese Cafe is one of the ones I wish she'd left alone, though.

RE: her voice. I can only take her pre-Blue albums in small doses because she was singing soooo high. I much prefer her voice from about the Hejira album on. I like her older/deeper voice to an extent, but it seems like it's deteriorated even since Turbulent Indigo (another favorite). I really do like deep-voiced women singers, though. Have you heard Cassandra Wilson?

I can only take pre-Hejira for about 3 songs too. Her voice has deteriorated, it is true, but she still really uses it like an instrument, which fascinates me. I think it actually sounded best on Night Ride Home, whch I consider to be one of the most perfect song cycles ever. Up until Ray's Dad's Cadillac, I am riveted.

I know Cassandra Wilson a bit...

Blue is absolute greatness, though.

There's a handful of her albums I don't have, but just heard a couple of songs from. Night Ride Home is one of them.

You must get it and you must get it NOW. You need to listen to it with headphones, and preferably with a cocktail. In the dark. I can practically guarantee that you will not even be able to MOVE for the first seven songs.
Lord have mercy, if you lived down the street I would buy a copy FOR you and bring it over right now. That is how good I think it is.

Wow...as soon as I've got some fundage, I'll have to get ahold of it, then.

Me too...I haven't bought one of her records since Dog Eat Dog (not really a favorite.) I love Blue, Court and Spark, and Ladies of The Canyon the best, with Hejira and Hissing of Summer Lawns right behind.

I don't have her very first one, but I have everything from Clouds through Hejira, plus Turbulent Indigo. I have owned Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, Chalk Mark in a Rain Storm (neither of which I cared for much), Taming the Tiger, Both Sides Now, and Travelogue, but I sold them at a used CD place a while back.
