No, I just think there are other ways to fund these things. I am a singer/songwriter who is passionate about music, so I don't think it really has anything to do with "art". I want to get rid of the department of education too...it doesn't mean I hate teachers!

And...btw...you are correct about one thing. I REALLY don't want my tax money going to something that promotes art depicting a crucifix submerged in urine.

Thats because you're a Catholic and you worship idols. truly, the Catholics imbue holy attributes to relics and whatnot. Which, if you strictly interpret the Commandments, is against God's law. The Golden Calf, the holy relics, and even "The Pope" are examples of endowing other items/people with holy power. Its actually an abomination in God's eyes......

As for Art, it is a highly subjective arena....I myself dont care for Picasso, but many do, so I say to them, carry on! Me, I'll look at Peter Max or Erte or something else

Where the hell did that come from! Which by the way none of that is true. Catholic apologetics is one of my specialties...so please lets not get on that topic!

I don't know why this doesn't bother me that much. I guess I'd like to think that gtovernment money would be better spent on helping the poor & lower-middle class in our country rather than on TV. People can live without TV, but they can't live without food & shelter.

Look: not to pick on Catholics, but it is a FACT that Catholics venerate relics and the pope, and as far as the 10 commandments go, thats a no no.
I dont care WHAT your specialty is, you cant deny that Catholics are guilty (in toto) of ignoring God's number one commandment. not only that, but Martin Luther nailed it on the HEAD when he railed against the Catholic Church for selling dispensations. The Catholic Church is RIFE with examples of making their own rules.

As for the National Endowment for the Arts....Im not sure why you are against funding it. Much better to fund something that enriches us as a society than to fund a bogus war, or to give tax breaks to corporations who dont give a rats ass about their workers......

Veneration is different than Worship. And if you think that Catholics are venerating a STATUE (relics, yes)...I'm sorry but you are a very jaded individual, and show your lack of understand deep, spiritual Catholic faith!

The first commandment (Hope you are talking about the Catholic/Lutheran 10 Commandments...because the protestant 10 commandments have this one listed as #2!) says a big "no no" to not worshiping Idols and also to putting any other gods before Yahweh God!

We don't worship idols, and I don't think we have any other god that we "eat the body and drink the flesh of" every Sunday at mass...so.

Don't get me started on that either...there are LOTS of departments that I wish would just disappear!

once again you expose your ineptitude my friend

Venerate comes from Latin veneratus, past participle of venerari, "to revere, to respect, to worship," from venus, vener-, "charm, loveliness."
and I might add Mother Mary to the list of personages that the Catholics venerate (worship!) just admit defeat! I'll go easier on you! maybe!

by the way, I wasnt aware that there were two versions of the ten commandments...but after doing a bit of research I found this:

Quote:
Although the Ten Commandments in the Douay Rheims Bible and King James Version of the Bible are the most well-known in the English-speaking world, they do not conform to today's usage: "Thou shalt not kill" instead of "You shall not murder."

Different groups have divided the commandments in different ways. For instance, Catholics and Lutherans see the first six verses as part of the same command prohibiting the worship of pagan gods, while Protestants (except Lutherans) separate all six verses into two different commands (one being "no other gods" and the other being "no graven images"). The initial reference to Egyptian bondage is important enough to Jews that it forms a separate commandment. Catholics and Lutherans separate the two kinds of coveting (namely, of goods and of the flesh), while Protestants (but not Lutherans) and Jews group them together.

A very similar, but not completely identical, list of commandments is found in Deuteronomy 5:1-22. Reference to each of the commandments and the consequences for not following them as a part of Hebrew Law are found throughout this book. In the New Testament book of Matthew 19 and elsewhere, Jesus refers to the commandments, but condenses them into two general commands: love God (Shema) and love other people (Ethic of reciprocity) (Matthew 22.34-40).
Actually you are mistaken about one thing: it is in the Rabbinic "Ten Statements" that "You shall have no other gods besides Me...Do not make a sculpted image or any likeness of what is in the heavens above..." appears, NOT The Protestant version....
Wikipedia says this:

and actually, Im getting a headache...at any rate, none of this discussion absolves the Catholics of WORSHIPPING the POPE or MOTHER MARY or THE HOLY RELICS (whatever they might be......)

Latria, Hyperdulia, Dulia & Simple Honor - Look them up Biotch!

I'm not even going to bother getting into this with you, if all the Catholics of the world could look at your SILLY argument(s) (especially the Mary one) they would all laugh so damn hard we'd all go deaf! We have heard this crap for years dear, you'd think they'd find something else to throw our way...something new!

Quote:
Since the days of the apostles, the Catholic Church has consistently condemned the sin of idolatry. The early Church Fathers warn against this sin, and Church councils also dealt with the issue.

The Second Council of Nicaea (787), which dealt largely with the question of the religious use of images and icons, said, "[T]he one who redeemed us from the darkness of idolatrous insanity, Christ our God, when he took for his bride his holy Catholic Church . . . promised he would guard her and assured his holy disciples saying, ‘I am with you every day until the consummation of this age.’ . . . To this gracious offer some people paid no attention; being hoodwinked by the treacherous foe they abandoned the true line of reasoning . . . and they failed to distinguish the holy from the profane, asserting that the icons of our Lord and of his saints were no different from the wooden images of satanic idols."

The Catechism of the Council of Trent (1566) taught that idolatry is committed "by worshipping idols and images as God, or believing that they possess any divinity or virtue entitling them to our worship, by praying to, or reposing confidence in them" (374).

"Idolatry is a perversion of man’s innate religious sense. An idolater is someone who ‘transfers his indestructible notion of God to anything other than God’" (CCC 2114).

The Church absolutely recognizes and condemns the sin of idolatry. What anti-Catholics fail to recognize is the distinction between thinking a piece of stone or plaster is a god and desiring to visually remember Christ and the saints in heaven by making statues in their honor. The making and use of religious statues is a thoroughly biblical practice. Anyone who says otherwise doesn’t know his Bible.

HELLO...Her name is "Irishgrl" If you were EDUCATED, you'd probably pick up on the fact that there's been a WAR in the British Isles (specifically North IRELAND) between Protestants and Catholics for quite some time. Okay, so they're not calling it a war, but there sure have been a lot of people who ended up with tags on their toes over the years. So, let's not cut the Department of Education just yet.

Which reminds me. Am I the only one who finds it odd that Southern Baptists hate it when people protest the war? Hello!!! You're PROTESTant. You're whole religious ideology started by a PROTEST. It's IN your NAME! Where's the consistancy. Southern Baptists against protesters is like saying Burger King against cows!

As for PBS, I'm glad they waited until AFTER Lindsey Buckingham's Soundstage aired before talking about funding (this is a FLEETWOOD MAC board, after all).

ah but the Catholics are the supreme hypocrites! they invade an area, hijack the local holidays and customs, give them pseudo "holy" names/functions and voila! its all good! All the while deluding themselves into thinking they've actually made a religious conquest! Do you wonder why the Da Vinci Code has worried the Catholic Church so much? or the Illuminati? Because the Church knows its foundations are nothing more than smoke and mirrors originally supported by the might of the Roman Army! you can SCOFF all you want but the Catholic Church is the epitome of hypocricy. And, Nostradamus predicted its downfall (in our times I believe)
Ever wonder why the Catholic Church had such a problem with Mary Magdalen? No of course you didnt! you're content with your heresy. Good for you.

You are correct in saying it is not a war...but I was aware of it. I just didn't except to get "Catholics worship idols" speech thrown at me.

It's not un-patriotic or un-American to oppose the war. Even Ann will tell you that. But if you oppose it...BECAUSE the UN or France doesn't agree, then that is not the right reasons!

Oh yea, and I agree...maybe we shouldn't cut the department of education yet...at least until you learn how to correctly spell this word. (tit for tat...sorry)

ok. just to clarify: I sympathize with the Catholics in Ireland, I think the English need to get OUT. But my arguments with Brwn_eyes arent about Ireland's troubles (Protestant vs. Catholic) The Protestants were an offshoot of Catholicism started by Martin Luther (the Reformation) and they actually share many customs such as the eucharist. The Church of England is a different story, started by Henry VIII in protest because the Pope wouldnt grant him a divorce from Catherine of Aragon. (Henry was Catholic until that time)
at any rate, my whole point was to highlight Brwn_eye's hypocricy about the comment deploring crosses in urine....I just wanted to point out that a cross is only a cross, and unless you imbue it with meaning (veneration) you cant desecrate it.

This headline brought the following line to my mind immediately :

Someone with a REALLY GOOD aim take a subautomatic weapon to the next meeting of The Republican Study Committee, Sparky urges.
