Default Mother Accused of Tossing Three Children Into Bay; One Body Recovered

as a mother & a human being this made me litearlly ill, amber did you hear of this?~

http://omaha.cox.net/cci/newsnationa...e&id=D8DBN71G0

SAN FRANCISCO -- A woman who was hearing voices tossed her three young children off a pier into San Francisco Bay, authorities said. Rescuers had found one body, and the other two children were feared dead.

The mother, Lashaun Harris, 23, of Oakland, was booked on three counts of murder, the San Francisco Chronicle reported in Thursday's editions. Her children were identified as Trayshaun Harris, 6, Travante Greely, 3, and Joshua Harris, 1.

A child's body was found about four hours after a witness reported seeing a woman drop the children into the bay near Pier 7 Wednesday, said Jonathan Guerra of the U.S. Coast Guard.

The San Francisco Examiner reported Thursday that the body of the 3-year-old had been recovered.

While rescuers searched for the children, an empty stroller was visible on the pier. A small inflatable Coast Guard boat was hugging the water front as rescuers used hand-held flashlights to search under the pier. Larger Coast Guard and San Francisco police boats were searching the water with high-powered flashlights.

Mayor Gavin Newsom came to the scene to get briefed by authorities and would only tell reporters, "I'm sick to my stomach," before leaving.

Lashaun Harris told authorities that voices had told her to throw her children into the water, the Chronicle reported. It was not immediately known whether she had an attorney.

She had been staying with her children at a Salvation Army shelter in Oakland, Mary Ann Ramirez, the social services manager of the shelter, told the Chronicle.

"I just talked to her yesterday," Ramirez said Wednesday. "We had our usual how are you doing, how's the kids. I would never have guessed in a million years that today she would do that."

The incident happened in the Embarcadero area, which draws tourists to the historic Ferry Building within view of Coit Tower and the landmark Transamerica pyramid. The fishing pier offers views of San Francisco, the Bay Bridge, ships in the bay, as well as Treasure Islands.

ARRGH! I disagree, I think the woman is sick, and needs help. I betcha she mourns those children when she regains her right mind. She may have been on drugs...who knows?

I love that they took a moment to plug the tourist attractions...

Leave it to you. You read a sad story about kids dying & instead of making a comment about how bad you feel for those kids or even how sick/psycho/evil/horrid (whatever you believe) the woman is, you post about capital punishment & insert a smiley. Very compassionate.

Those poor babies. I hope they didn't suffer or realize what was happening.

Angry Almost as distgusting...

as the crackhead who threw her 6 month old baby from a vehicle (Like a piece of litter) into oncoming traffic in OKC about a year ago.

Someone should have thrown her into oncoming traffic, I would have greatfully volunteered to do so.

Just because you can create a child doesnt mean you can raise a child.

i dont know what to say other than i hope she feels a similar pain to what those children felt.

What happens when you drown?

In the cheery euphemism of science, drowning is “death by submerging in an aqueous environment.” It’s one of the most frightening ways to die. It’s also one of the most misunderstood.

“It’s important to dispel the myth the movies and TV have left us with,” says John Fletemeyer, V.P. of the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., who experienced near-drowning himself. “The common idea is that you scream out, slip under the water, and float face-down. It doesn’t happen that way at all.”

Here’s what does happen:

Stage One:
Fletemeyer calls drowning a gruesome process. “People do panic, but they very seldom call for help,” he says. Adds Julie Gilchrist, a medical epidemiologist in Atlanta: “Drowning happens quickly, and in silence.”

Drowning begins with an “active” stage, during which the victim makes every effort to keep his head above water. This can last four or five minutes, or possibly longer, depending on conditions and the strength of the swimmer.

Stage Two:
Eventually the drowning victim is forced to take a breath underwater. Water rushes into the respiratory system. The larynx, or windpipe, involuntarily squeezes shut in around 10 percent of cases. This leads to “dry drowning,” whereby the victim suffocates to death underwater, with no liquid entering the lungs.

In the far more common “wet drowning,” water floods both lungs, overwhelming the tiny air sacs called alveoli, in which the exchange of oxygen and CO2 occurs. “Your head aches, your lungs burn, it’s a terrifying feeling,” Fletemeyer says. “It’s not only extreme physical pain, but there’s a horrible sense of utter hopelessness also.”

Stage Three:
This is the passage from consciousness to unconsciousness. During his near-drowning experience, Fletemeyer experienced “a peaceful state.” The next thing he felt was “20 or 40 seconds later, the pain of my knees scraping as I was dragged out of the pool.”

Stage Four:
The biochemical balance of the body is now severely disrupted. Within 30 seconds, the heart stops. All brain function ceases. Finally, death. The Red Cross recognizes a two- to four-minute window after breathing has stopped in which to revive a victim.

drowned when I was about 12-13 years old.

My older brother Geary & myself were playing/swimming underneath a new highway bridge in about 3 feet of water when I slipped under near one of the bridge supports into a dropoff about 5-6 feet below the river bed.

I could not reach the surface for air and I was panicking worse than I can ever remember in my life (I still remember the whole incident as clear as if if happened a day ago), I was thrashing about trying to get to the surface and Geary could not reach me. I kept thrashing about try to bob to the surface but I couldnt do it...I felt I was being "pulled under" and I felt for a spilt second at peace/at ease as if this was the feeling a person feels before losing their life....So I quit thrashing (According to Geary).

Out of desparation Geary reached down and grabbed me by my hair (Ouch!) and had enough of my hair to pull me away from the under current of the bridge support so he could get a better hold of me and pull me to safety.

After that incident I promised myself I will never swim in a river EVER again, And when I do swim on the rare occassion I will make sure that I have someone else with me.
